This was one of the first games my parents bought me for my gameboy color when I was a kid but the version I had was called super mario deluxe.
Definitely a good version to start on, apart from the screen crunch

This was the first video game I ever played. It came with the nes and the gun to play duck hunt.
I remember Duck Hunt. You had to line the gun up perfectly.

I don't delight in your tribulations, but I gotta say it's a bit of relief to see guys who can rock complex fighting games having a bit o' difficulty with a classic side-scroller. Though I'd much rather be good at MVC2 than Mario 1, it seems there is some balance in the video game world. :) Thanks for the nostalgic therapy!

I remember beating this game some months ago. World 8 is all pure RNG, lots of luck involved at it, and the rest of the game is also great fun to play. Definitely a classic, its one of my favorite Mario games alongside the 64 version, Super Mario Land and Super Mario World.

I didn’t beat this version (I think). I beat the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Color. Wow. What an experience. I was so stoked when I finished it. Really was one of my proudest gaming moments.

Yeah, classic SMB, you lose both layers of power-up on hit... and if you grab a Fire Flower while you are 'small' Mario, you just go into 'big' Mario... good times...
That's correct. One hit in the original turns you back to small Mario. Mario 3 was when you first take multiple hits.

I played this game on wii u for the first time a few years ago. All the hardcore NES games were right all along, cause this game is kinda hard! I got frustrated and quit like the filthy baby I am. Mario 1 is the Dark Souls of platformers.
If you think this game is hard, which it's not, play the Lost Levels
