  • Why did an Arctic glacier suddenly speed up?
An event organized by EAGE Local Chapters Paris and Aberdeen on 20 March 2024 featuring guest speaker Dr. William D. Harcourt, Interdisciplinary Fellow (University of Aberdeen).
    Summary:
In this talk, the results of a project studying the active "surge" of a glacier in Svalbard will be discussed. This survey is using a unique combination of drones, seismometers, Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) surveys, palaeo-glaciological analysis and satellite velocity measurements.
Surges are cyclical events. Surge-type glaciers remain slow for long periods of time and then suddenly speed up, largely unpredictably. Measurements acquired for this project contribute to a better understanding of the processes driving glacier surges and their impacts on iceberg calving.
