If you go to the Wikipedia page for Heroes, it shows that ratings started out averaging at 15 million viewers for the first season, then it steadily dropped until they were averaging as little as 5 million.
There are a lot of parallels between the two characters. Both are killers, both had traumatic childhoods, both kill because of a "hunger" inside them. It's no surprise that one reminds you of another.
It is A: not the ticking of the finished clock, it is the ticking of the clockwork, to symbolize Sylar's ability to understand complex systems or B: It is ticking "wrong", because that's how Sylar feels about the people that are undeserving of their powers ("broken") and it symbolizes that.
That scene was shot for the original version of Sylar a guy named Paul Sylar, an older, religious man who was turned into a killer because of his powers but hates himself because of it. He also had a different hat. He was in the original unaired pilot but his story was dropped in favor of the Gabriel Gray story that they ended up going with. I guess they kept that scene because it was creepy and mysterious. Hope I helped.
I hate how everyone was complaining that the plotline was getting messed up and that the show was getting worse and worse, so they had to cancel... but the thing is that the show was just starting to get better. They should've given it a chance.
It's such a pity that heroes was cancelled, but I did feel like it lost the plot a bit. They could bring it back, but it won't have as many views as it did originally, which makes me sad :'( And as a side note, I LOVE the clocks in the background...
I think sylar is a very emotive character, for what he represents for the human race. He was using his ability quite happily to fix watches, but then learned he could use it for something darker, more powerful. In the same way, a captain of a football team could use those skills to lead an army, a recreational mathematician could calculate how much damage an atomic bomb would cause, and a doctor knows the best way to kill someone
2:05 to 3:37 is creepy, horrifying, and hauntingly enchanting all at the same time. Incredibly unnerving and disturbing. Perfect for the part of the show when he's killing the cheerleader. That part's always hard to watch thanks to this theme. Best piece of music in the whole show. Well, tied with all the other great themes.
Now that you mention it, he does remind me a lot of Trinity. I've seen the unaired pilot and he does seem like he wants to be a good guy, just not enough to stop slicing peoples heads open. You only actually get to see him for one second at the end, I'm getting all this from the SYLAR tape Mohinder found. They actually play it in this version instead of just the voicemail.
@thomas007 I always saw Sylar as a character that is morally righteous villain; an anti-hero if you will (anti-heroes are those who's morality and actions are questionable, not completely evil or good). He's not a mass murderer and only seeks to kill those that would satiate his ability's hunger. Though he is portrayed as the villain throughout the entire series, there are moments when he too, despite his proclamation "I hate heroes", displays the qualities of one.
Delanoftw Actually his little protege reminded me of Dexter and Sylar kind of played the Harry role. That kid totally had Dexter mannerisms and facial similarity and hair. I'm pretty sure that was done intentionally... For the record I did like Dexter better....

I was listening to this at half past midnight alone in my room and at the middle part it starting to get really scary... Nice! Sylar is so complex and villainous but at the same time so fractured and confused. I like him because I can identify myself with him in that we both want to be special. Sylar's my favorite character in the series because, imo, he's the only one that changes very drastically. The rest of the cast changes as well, but Sylar just takes the cake.
in the first couple edisodes, there is a part where mohinder and the girl across the hall go into Sylar's appartment, where he has written "god forgive me" on the walls. After watching 3 seasons, he has not seemed to be incredibally sorry for what he has done, especially when he was still a "bad guy". Why did they even have that scene at all?
