It's been 15+ years since I started as a WordPress developer, I think both are right at their point. But the WP Engine is right about using WP as it's opensource and WP has no restrictions in their Terms of use that if one is making money from WP, they MUST contribute back. If they contribute back, it's good, but if they don't, you can't force them.

WP was said to be open source but in reality there is two tier system. The one ppl are told to download doesn't encourage ppl to write PHP code. But if you contact the org and pay to become a sponsor they will give you a different beast.

I think you are missing all the trademark discussion. The problem is not just that WP engine is making money but that they are doing it by confusing their customers by misusing the trademark of wordpress.
I’m a wordpress developer for 12+ years, I can tell you that clearly without plugins and themes no one will use wordpress, In this case I’m not with any of the sides both are wrong.
Matt is kinda right if a company use the official trade mark of a open source it should be contributing to the core project... He's not having expectations to any other company which uses WordPress.... And wp engine can close the matter by just compensating either by money or resource, or stop using the official trade mark if they really not have intention to contribute in the core project...

I think the whole Idea of OpenSource is flawed, I've seen many project where the big companies take a opensource product and change it a little bit or just create a walled garden around it and in the name of support and stability they earn in millions but most of the companies even though they earn in millions they don't hire people to work on developing that particular opensource product, they find it as a cost, I think if big corporations use the opensource product commercially, with good heart if the provide some resources to the opensource product its appreciated but deep down most of the corporations are monsters.
I think the mistake is anthropomorphising companies. Every construct that exists aims to save resources, because they are finite and cost other resources. So... not surprising. But I do agree that we need to have a talk about FOSS - because the expectations are obviously shifting, now that there's actual trust in open-source solutions.
Actually, the OSS Foundation is to be blamed. They have a very impractical definition of Open Source Software. They back the big giants like AWS who milk the projects like ElasticSearch, Redis, Postgres etc without contributing. What's worse is, when these guys take a stand for themselves by making their project SSPL (MongoDB, Elastic search, Redis did this), they help these big companies in vilifying the open source projects, and even tell them as not Open Source.
One thing that I have come realize is that, these days, there seems to be a glitch in the matrix. In many situations both parties are right and that leaves us not knowing who is wrong. There's a logical corruption somewhere in the architectural design of the matrix in which we exist. Why are both of them right? If non of them is wrong, where do we go from here?
That is the very definition of "dramatic conflict" - both sides are right, and you end up having to pick which side is "more right" for you. For example - I firmly believe that if you _can_ contribute, you _should_ contribute if it's given you value. But at the same time, I need WPEngine to win this one. Why? Because the way Matt is doing it, is _undermining FOSS foundations_ as a concept - and that is more important than Wordpress.
WP the trash framework, you made money with it by turning it into a headless framework because that trash couldn't handle what it was designed for 😅 And the host in question made this much money just for optimization because most WP developers use 100s of pointless plugins, and bulky themes and couldn't write a line of PHP code to save their life... 😅
I would recommend trying WordPress firsthand before forming an opinion. As a React Developer and a full-time WordPress Developer, I can confidently say that I can build a fully functional, fast, SEO-friendly website using only two plugins, while keeping it easy to maintain. However, if I’m limited to two plugins, the same rule should apply on your end-no more than two modules or libraries. 😂

I am 100% sure most of this channel's subscriber already knows "what Wordpress is", so there is no point spending 3 mins in intro and then another 2mins in explaining what wordpress is, before getting into the real topic.
With 900k subscribers this channel must do survey to know their subscribers better. I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feeling. I just expected a channel with 900k subs to be more mature. No wonder the avg views of his recent vides are around 10-15k or less.
