  • I share updates on progress made by radio hobbyists in recording and translating Russian military analogue radio transmissions during the war in Ukraine.
    * I do slip up and say 'The Ukraine' on one occasion, it's a habit not intentional.

Carl, thank you for this information especially the radio frequencies, even though I live in the US, I will try and see if I can monitor any of these frequencies. And Carl, I also agree that it is important to monitor those frequencies to see if any new information can be learned. Alot of good information, and thank you for sharing.

It is worth monitoring RTTY and other data signals as well, I have come across some interesting transmissions, some definitely appears code, not encryption as such. One transmission looked like the equivalent of the enigma code, blocks of letters, some blocks of numbers, transmitted for around 5-10 minutes. These are amongst the blocks of STANAG frequencies. Sorcerer works quite well for decoding some stuff. There are also Link-11 transmissions, unfortunately I, as most of us don't have access to go2DECODE to decode these transmissions.
Keep scanning the airwaves people, try different settings and see what you get. Some rtty 850 75bd can be decoded into something legible, just need some code breakers to get information from the text.

if the Ukraine Hams would switch off the 2mtr and 70Cms repeaters it would stop the Russian soldiers from communicating.

    Every conversation goes something like:

One would have to assume civilian use of ham radio is blocked in Ukraine for a lot of the same reasons why it would be blocked here.
We have 2nd usage on a lot of the bands, military would take control of those bands immediately and not so much because they want to use them, but so that there is less work for them to do when monitoring them.
The next reason is safety. Triangulation and direction finding, aka fox hunting, is a very real thing. The military might isn't going to be playing around when it comes to taking out anything like radio transmission for what would be seen as rogue operators.
It's ralitively easy to use the kiwi websdr as a triangulation network, and you can use make a very good single station triangulation tool using 3 calibrated SDR dongles. We would have to assume the military would have the same capability easily accessible to them.

      Blocked?
      Why would you assume that?
      The reality is very different.

I've just been testing things within UA-cam and thought I'd take a break and watch the recording of Callum's premier from last night and ...
      WTF?
What's happened to Callum's channel? I hope its UA-cam just throwing a wobbler and auto blocking an account and then it'll be reinstated after a talking to.
