The other huge issue that recent years have shown is power. Im not sure Texas would be able to isolate and support itself electrically from the rest of the US. Its already struggling with even the imported power that it currently takes (mostly because its DC links are hugely under capacity needed and outdated at best)
Why would they need to? Why can't they have independence & free trade? Why must secession be hostile? Why not simply let them govern themselves? Sanctions are a double edged sword. Texas can still free up their markets o the rest of tge world willing to trade.

As a texan, I have had to memorize the Texas constitution, ( including the constitution before its 6 other copies ) and in none of them could I find that Texas could secede from the union, alas, I still believe we could, though most states would probably stop trading with us, most likely causing the population to decrease because of lack of supplies.

No, the opposite would happen. Business would flock to Texas because of the friendly business environment, which the federal government wouldn't be able to compete with.
The economic argument falls apart when you consider the number of companies that would pack up and leave for the United States. And that's not even including all the things run by the federal government that would shut down, like NASA. So much of the economy south of Houston is tied up in NASA and NASA contractors that the whole area would plummet into a Depression. The economic issue is *so much more complicated* than just the amount of tax money flowing to and from the state.
Those issues are all solvable in the theoretical case where the USA is willing to let Texas leave. Although, I admit, a federal government willing to just let Texas go would also probably have a hard time talking itself into the kind of economic interventionism such measures would involve.
@@dashiellgillingham4579 Not necessarily. The NASA issue would be unsolvable. They would straight up not operate their space center in a foreign country. Collaboration and sending astronauts up is not the same thing. Texas would also be excluded from the USMCA and any other trade deals the US negotiated. They'd have to completely renegotiate with trade partners which would be a no-go for a lot of companies operating there.

Texas is a large producer of oil, they will be able to trade that with other country's that aren't alleys to USA, Texas economy would hurt for a moment but be back up and better then it was before

It also depends on whether the secessions cascade. Remember in the beginning of the Confederacy was made up of South Carolina. And that's it. With them suddenly going through with articles of secession the other states around them started to do so. And if the reasons Texas is trying to leave the Union are shared by other states you could have a wave of states one after the other trying to leave. Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma might decide that their interests are better served by joining the Texas Republic than with the USA. (Especially with the way the US is going) and this could lead to the Western Seaboard not wanting to be apart and leaving. And we all know the lower Southern States would want to leave. If bad enough for Texas to actually take a serious stab at leaving, other states wouldn't be worried about trading with them. Many would probably be thinking of how they can leave to.

Also consider that even if they do win, it will then become a military occupation of Texas. People won't just turn over and say "fine, I guess we'll go back to being American". Armed insurgency and uprisings will start up all over the state, causing millions/billions of dollars to maintain troops and fix sabotaged infrastructure. I'm from the uk so trust me i know what leaving a union means. first you need to look at your surroundings. if you're in the center of a union then you will have serious trade issues. then you will have a number of your own people that will fight against you. then you have the issues with currency. be ready if you are planning to try.

The other huge issue that recent years have shown is power. Im not sure Texas would be able to isolate and support itself electrically from the rest of the US. Its already struggling with even the imported power that it currently takes (mostly because its DC links are hugely under capacity needed and outdated at best)

The problem with the economy argument is that simply looking at ins and outs isn't sufficient. For starters, Texas receives a TON of federal support through the military-industrial complex.
Looking at this 9 years later as Texas' infrastructure regularly collapses whenever the weather gets too hot or too cold makes me more skeptical of Grey's "an independent Texas would be fine" thesis.

No tariffs, no border crossings, no (additional) inspections, etc. Not to mention the fact that the US would not take kindly to someone bailing on them, ESPECIALLY because they pay more in taxes than they receive. So more than likely there would be trade embargoes.

The issue of if a state could secede was dealt with in the 1860s. If a state could just randomly decide to leave then there would be no USA.

I'm from Texas, and attended a constitutional law class in a Texas university, we covered all this as you reported. However, I believe 90% of Texans believe it can split into 5 states and secede.

As a texan, I have had to memorize the Texas constitution, ( including the constitution before its 6 other copies ) and in none of them could I find that Texas could secede from the union, alas, I still believe we could, though most states would probably stop trading with us, most likely causing the population to decrease because of lack of supplies.
Why do you still believe you could it is not in your constitution? What legal basis would you have? Some sort of treatise or contract?

The economic argument falls apart when you consider the number of companies that would pack up and leave for the United States. And that's not even including all the things run by the federal government that would shut down, like NASA. So much of the economy south of Houston is tied up in NASA and NASA contractors that the whole area would plummet into a Depression. The economic issue is *so much more complicated* than just the amount of tax money flowing to and from the state.
Those issues are all solvable in the theoretical case where the USA is willing to let Texas leave. Although, I admit, a federal government willing to just let Texas go would also probably have a hard time talking itself into the kind of economic interventionism such measures would involve.

Collaboration and sending astronauts up is not the same thing. Texas would also be excluded from the USMCA and any other trade deals the US negotiated. They'd have to completely renegotiate with trade partners which would be a no-go for a lot of companies operating there.

the thing this video fails to consider is that while Texas does have a large economy, they do a lot of trade with the rest of the US. presumably, if Texas tried seceding, other states wouldn't do business with them anymore

Texas is a large producer of oil, they will be able to trade that with other country's that aren't alleys to USA, Texas economy would hurt for a moment but be back up and better then it was before
Doubtful it would damage trade at all because the other states don't care and they probably be getting cheaper and better goods and services from an independent Texas. Worst thing that would happen it would be to encourage all the other states to secede as well. And while it's not in the Texas Constitution it is an option for any state to leave the union

It also depends on whether the secessions cascade. Remember in the beginning of the Confederacy was made up of South Carolina. And that's it. With them suddenly going through with articles of secession the other states around them started to do so. And if the reasons Texas is trying to leave the Union are shared by other states you could have a wave of states one after the other trying to leave.
Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma might decide that their interests are better served by joining the Texas Republic than with the USA. (Especially with the way the US is going) and this could lead to the Western Seaboard not wanting to be apart and leaving. And we all know the lower Southern States would want to leave.
If bad enough for Texas to actually take a serious stab at leaving, other states wouldn't be worried about trading with them. Many would probably be thinking of how they can leave to.
I like how in the hypothetical "5 Texases" scenario you counted Austin as separate from the other Texases. Austin always was the odd one out that other Texans look at sideways so +1 for acknowledging that nugget of Texan culture.

In the end, it wouldn't be worth it for the US to use military force.

I'm from the uk so trust me i know what leaving a union means. first you need to look at your surroundings. if you're in the center of a union then you will have serious trade issues. then you will have a number of your own people that will fight against you. then you have the issues with currency. be ready if you are planning to try.

I’m from Texas, and we own the 5th largest trade port in the USA through Houston, as well as the largest oil supply in America. So although I’m not suggesting we should leave the union, at a mere surface level observation, it’s absolutely possible!
@@bradleypatterson1346 we also have the 9th largest economy on earth, even with the federal gov killing us with over 184000 pages of regulations.
