I have come to the conclusion that I must be the only person out there who uses their middle fingers instead of index fingers :') Also thumb players: you baffle me, but you have my respect!!
As a thumb player, the cramps are agonizing, but I can play with the screen closer to my face with more arm movement so I just play with my thumbs on tablet lmao 👍
I use index on phone mainly and while it's definitely more difficult when your phone is on a smoother surface such as a desk. Whenever I play on my bed use a pillow in my lap to hold the phone that keeps it mostly in place. (the pillow is more of a plushie than pillow so the material is less for laying on and more for squishing, doesn't move as easily as a regular one.)
Actually, the hardest one is playing with the phone/tablet upside down (I've always watched ppl play like that with project diva so i tried to do the same thing with my ps vita and ps4 but it was hard so i tried with the phone and it was hard too hsjshsussj)
so accurate, i always position the tip of my thumb to be stand vertically and steady, so i could handle flicknote more accurately and quick to respon a multi notes with some twist / sudden change patterns.... but it will get sore quickly afterwards.. 🗿
Assuming you're not on a multifinger map, I think the difficulty of each playstyle depends on the size of your device and your hands! I have small hands and an average sized tablet, playing with thumbs is possible for me but it's hard, index fingers on the other hand is much easier
Thumb on phone. Index just seems so awkward since you have to set it down and the phone slides and you look like a creeper looming over your phone with your index fingers. I really wonder if thumb play is actually a lot harder. I do pretty well in the game.

Thumbs is only the hardest for master lvls and their multifinger patterns that you will have to jack through which requires insane speed and stamina.

i use middle finger on one hand and index on the other and switch between them. Used to use both middle fingers in the past

im also someone who uses index on phone, i usually place my phone on an antislip mat so it slides less

1st and 2nd is the best. I'm not that optimal with 3rd, 4th is just lol no and I don't even know if 5th was ever used by someone.
I use 5th alot when left side is easier with thumbs and right side is easier with fingers
