Here is some more of Rubie's Spooky Sounds. This is part 2/3. Hope u guys like this! This is mostly a musical cd in all, but part 3 has a lot of sound effects...I think...lol
The song in the beginning is absolutely brilliant. The use of thunder and wolves' howls as part of the music rather than just happening in the background of the music was a great decision. The thunder starts off loud, overpowering the music. Then it settles down, allowing the music to make its presence clear and establish a mood. Once that mood has been established, the thunder can enhance it with some well-timed crashes and some quiet rumbling. The best part for me, though, is after the wolves come in. At 1:15, the second part of the howl is used like a musical instrument, to do a fill. It being divorced from the first part makes it cooler in my opinion; not sure why. Then at 1:20, another howl begins, but the second part is replaced by thunder, denying the listener the resolution they were expecting, and thus holding on to that tension until the next key change. And boy, is it ever a good key change. 1:28, and the final howl, (and my favourite part of the song), begins. It's timed so that the key changes right in between the first and second parts of the howl. This again has the effect of making the howl like an instrument, both punctuating, and being punctuated by, the change of key. Then the drums start to add in more elements, the thunder gets more frantic, and the key starts to change more rapidly, ultimately ending just a half step below the starting key of the song. I never noticed or thought about it when I listened to this as a kid, but it gives it the feeling of possibly being an endless loop, which adds to the horror aspect, I suppose. Anyway, all of that is why this is my favourite part of the whole album.
