  • The familiar 1931 song hit was written for “Billy Rose’s Crazy Quilt,” a 79-performance 1931 revue that featured Fanny Brice, Phil Baker, and Ted Healy among the cast. See also my posts of the song by:

🙂really wish we still had public singsongs, tea dances, dances at the end of the piers, pianos in pubs etc, the old vaudeville i suppose. Just as antidote to C20th. Properly feel good factor from this song. Thank you.

My favorite take is The Bozzies' and then Bing's, but Smith, too, makes a charming dime store patron. With his good looks, we can imagine that he would have caught the eye of many a saleslady -- even before she'd heard his clear and earnest tones. Nice bass clarinet here, too.

My favourite is also the Bozzies take. I do wish they'd been given more than just the one chorus, though. This is rather charming, too. I like the more relaxed tempo compared to Al Bowlly's version with Roy Fox, which swings joyously, but just lacks the intimacy of this, and the Sisters treatment. Agree about the bass clarinet-a much underused instrument.

@@Phaaschh Yes, I like the Fox take too, but I do believe that Al, despite his fine interpretation and phrasing, is somewhat hampered by that brisk tempo. ... Also, yes, one chorus limited the Bozzies' ability to "mess around," as the hep folks say.

A 33rpm album came out in 1988 to commemorate Irving Berlin's 100th birthday. The Boswell Sisters' version of this song was one included on one of the tracks. A local AM radio station in our town, which used to play music on a morning news-weather-sports-information program, for an entire month featured a song off the album every day. Now that station is just talk, talk, talk all day and night every single day. So tired of that format. I grew up listening to great radio when most stations had "block programming". And listeners could phone the station, speak to the person in charge playing music, and request a certain song be played (which usually got air play soon after the request was made). The 2nd half of the last century was a great time to be young.

Well! A lot of pluses for this one. No frills arrangement. Great solo use of bass clarinet (one of my horns). Good, straight vocal by SB. During my collecting days, Crowns were very scarce Any idea how were they sold in retail?
