- Udon Thani Museum, what a little gem.
Living in Udon Thani Thailand.
Udon Thani museum has just gone through a major refit and reopened just a few days ago. Pook and I took our nephew to the museum to see what kind of a job they have mad of it. We were impressed. The museum covers the history of Udon Thani from the ice age, through to the present day.
If you are in town, be sure to pay the museum a visit. You won't be disappointed.

Impressive, most impressive! Thanks for the share, Kev - it looks like it's a *_must_* visit!
You’re welcome Larry and thank you.
It really is worth a visit.
Whenever things open up, I'll dfinitely make a trip to UT.
@@LarryFournillier We'll see you when you do Larry.
Very sharp observation of the style of bricks. Interesting back story building. A beautiful museum. I enjoyed watching so much. Thank you
You’re welcome Bill and thank you.
A pleasure to listen to you BOTH discuss the visit. I see many videos from Thailand with couples (foreign men) with their Thailand partner that are almost in the background. A pleasurable video. I watch other videos whom you are in.
You'll never keep Pooky quite Dennis 😂
The two way conversation is something that I enjoy most about our relationship.
Pleased that you enjoyed it.
Hello >>>KEVIN
They have done a great job of the renovation and new exhibits. Well worth a visit.
very interesting , top job again
Thank you.
Hi Guys, certainly worth a visit. Looks very interesting. Thanks for the video
You’re welcome Tony and thank you.
I meet with a few veterans that were based out of Udon Thani During the Vietnam war era they had wonderful Memories to share I’ll bet the biggest impact that the city has ever seen over the course of its history was the building of the airport during that time.
I'd love to be able to meet with and talk to some of the veterans who were here during that period in history.
I didn't know too much about it at the time as I was a kid, living in the UK.
I think the interest stems from the music that is associated with the 60's/70's and that is always depicted in any movie about the Vietnam war.
The museum states that on average, at any given time, there were around 8,000 GI's based in Udon Thani.
@@TheIsaanFarang The Connection with the Vietnam war and Udon is very strong. Two museums worth a visit are the Ho Chi Minh centre about 6 miles north West outside of Udon. and the Ramasun base to the south of Udon. The Ramasun station was a top secret US radio listening site during the Vietnam era. Ho Chi Minh lived in Udon during the 1920's . The airport was built by the US after world war 2 and was used by the Taiwanese and US to listen in on the Chinese. The secret war in Laos was run out of Udon Thani airbase by the CIA this involved arming Hmong and Thai troops fighting the Prathet Lao and North Vietnamese.

Thanks Ed...Fascinating.
There is another airfield which is pretty much overgrown now which was used during the Vietnam war, north of Khon Kaen. I have added a link

@@TheIsaanFarang Hi Yes this was built by the Americans at Nam Phong but never used for Combat operations. With the collapse of Laos the Americans had a huge Hmong refugee camp at this location including the Hmong leader General Vang Pao staying here before moving to the US.
@@edtee8102 The only reason that I found this airfield is because Pook's aunt owns a cafe close to it.
Thanks for sharing Ed.
Where exactly is the Ho Chi Minh centre that you mentioned?
Quality video Kev and Pook that museum looks great I'm definitely going to Udon Thani when the borders are open 😎🙏🇹🇭
Worth the visit Brendan. Lovely place, as is the park that it backs onto.
Nice place to see thanks for sharing. I was a grade school student in California Vista and I shook hands with President Nixon.
You’re welcome and thank you.
Will be nice if will get back to udon.

It looked pretty boring when you pulled up. But I was pleasantly surprised just like you. Very Good.
Even a look around the building is worth while but the exhibits are great Robert.
very good tour of the museum Kev, it was like being there. thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Kevin.
Maybe remember the theme is Children? Using rubber ducks
Still seems odd to be used as a symbol for the city I think.
I pay close attention to videos as my wife is and actress in Malaysia and when I go and watch the filming I am clued in and she asked me my take on it. You did very well.
That's interesting Dennis and thanks for the compliment 🙂
Great video....the clay is not red...grey colour...the pots come from Ban Chiang. Ban Chiang is a World Heritage site. They have a museum and you can also visit the original site where they uncovered the burial site. Some of the pottery is 5000 years old.
Thanks for sharing Tony 👍
Thank you Tony .Ban Chiang is actually one of the worlds greatest archeological sites, and anyone visiting Udon Thani should be aware of the significance of those touristy mementos.
@@brianwood8086 There is also the red lotus lake and Kam Chanot within an hour's drive.
@@brianwood8086 Oh..and the new Lotus Temple.
@@splashery Been to both, I love Udon Thani..... very laid back, very Issan
Very interesting vlog about that new museum near Nong Prajak park.Next year when i hope to can travel again to Udorn i sure want to visit it.Every year i visit my girlfriend for about 18 years.
Good luck Ralph. I hope that you can get back soon.
Amazing will definitely like to visit when we can return to Thailand.
Be sure to...It's a great place and the park at the back is real nice too.
Thanks for sharing this gem for us!
Your welcome Svein.
Great video
Thank you Tommy 🙂
Liking your videos. Who is the little boy? Is he her son before you hooked up? Just wondering because she lived in the UK for years. I wouldn’t ask normally but you have been an open book about everything. You seem a gentleman and pook is lovely
He is our nephew Dave. One of Pook's brother's lads.
@@TheIsaanFarang ah I see. Fair play. Looking forward to seeing that house of yours when it’s finished. Pook looks so excited as anyone is within something like that. What a great adventure you are both on
Will definitely go to this museum next time in Udon. Great vlog take care and stay safe you two.
👍🙏💙🇹🇭
Thank you! You too!
A massive vase would be better in Udon Thani than plastic ducks.
Thais love plastic things though.
😂😂😂
I will definitely have to visit that museum it looked really nice!
It really is!
@@TheIsaanFarang it reminds me here where I live we have Tge WW2 D-Day Museum and it’s fantastic!
Thanks for uploading I love history especially pre history and the bronze age there is a small museum in nong khai Mick nong khai
Thanks for sharing that 🙂
Oh well, a museum with a lot of screens in it, but no actual original artifacts. But I guess that's to be expected. You were right about the bricks though, most likely sourced from French Indochina when it was built, the reason why all French colonial buildings have survived in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. You can probably find identical brickwork in Chantaburi, which was colonized by the French 1900 to 1910.
They do have original artefacts but I couldn't cover everything. The video would have been too long Jeremy.
Thanks for sharing the information.
Hi both of you, museum looks great not so sure of the rusty metal building next door, I have to agree about the ducks but it does seem to be the symbol now of udon have no idea why as like you say the pots are better image for the area.
Absolutely agree Andy.
How's your house coming along?
Update coming soon.
I want to go to Thailand when these covid restrictions are done . Where are the good area's to go and visit . I want to avoid the bad area's. Any suggestions ?
Not found any bad areas Bruce. You have the busy, tourist areas as well as the quite places, the beaches and the open countryside, flatlands and mountainous areas. Pretty much everything 🙂
If you like the beaches, try some of the islands. If you are looking for a little more solitude, head up towards Udon Thani. That way you can always dip in and out of the town which is not too busy.
Interesting Kevin , funny all the times I’ve been there never seen that 😂😂
It's a beautiful building and the exhibits are great.
I would agree that the museum is now really nice but there is no access for wheelchairs for the Bellinee's cafe or even ramps. To say that it has had a massive refurbishment there has been little or no thought for wheelchair bound people, I had to carry my 38 year old very ill daughter from the museum to the park as no access at all for her wheelchair. 😡😡
Sorry to hear that Robert. I saw they had provided a lift and ramps. Wonder why they didn't carry that through in other areas!!!
The Rubber Duck is a rather unfortunate addition to a municipal venue considering the current images of rubber ducks in Bangkok.
🙄👍
I must have passed that hundreds of times and - shamefully - never went in. Watching the firefighters play hacky sack seemed more obvious entertainment!
😂😂😂
I can see that...But next time that you're passing, take a look at the place. It's really very good.
