or dig for gold too if you want to do that. or fix broken shovels. or design some t-shirts that say "went digging for gold and all i got was this lousy t-shirt". whatever, just get in on the thriving economy and profit.

good video. nice to see an actual visual representation of what everybody in the hobby kinda sensed was happening. not sure why the comments are so dumb today, but youtube gonna youtube i suppose lol. anyway...
i think this is the sign of a perfectly healthy and thriving ecosystem. theres a lot of players in this game and everyone in this hobby has to kinda get in where they fit in. personally i would never buy repacks or join a break or anything, but if people want to do that it's fine with me. a lot of the action in this hobby is being propped up by the repackers and breakers. if we could just flip a switch and make them go away instantly that would also wipe out a TON of the demand for wax and singles and crater prices.
theres just so many people who want to collect sportscards right now. it feels like its bigger than its ever been and getting bigger by the day. idk i guess im just not nearly as bearish as most people seem to be about the direction the hobby is heading. i think its in a pretty good place right now and your diagram shows why.
Wow ultra-modern is a crazy world. As a high grade vintage collector I buy stuff, hold for decades (hopefully until I leave them to my heirs) and watch my cards appreciate over the years dreaming of the hobby crashing so hard that I can afford high grade Ruths and Cobbs. More and more I buy direct from the collector as I establish relationships. The hobby must hate me because the green arrows stop when I buy the card. PSA/SGC and auction houses all got their cut at some point but often that was 5-10 years ago. Collect Insure gets an annual cut from me. The rest of the cuts stop until I pass away.
Forgot the top level which is the sports league that sells their licenses to fanatics/panini. Also forgot the card is taxed almost at every transaction by local, state

While actual secondary market prices do certainly fluctuate over time it really does show how the gamblers (people paying to rip packs and paying for mystery repacks) are where the big revenue/profit dumps come from, which is why breakers and repackers have exploded of course. Service providers (grading and selling) are big winners here too clearly.
You forgot the divorce attorneys after spouses find out how much was spent :)

Love the crazy vids as always but as long as I get the percentage I want anything after that oh well …. And some guys think there not supposed to lose . Sometimes you lose but the win is greater on something else…
USPS, UPS, and FedEx find a way as well; in addition to IRS, you have the state sales tax, and state income tax

It's been this way since the boom. It's why I got out of cards, aside from the crazy grading discrepancies. People need to learn to think outside the box and escape the herd mentality. Get into other sectors of the hobby where there's very little to no competition and buy GOATS.

He definitely a large contributor to it. He turned a large group of collectors into investors (most of whom got screwed) and now it's a game of "How much can i flip this for?" A master class in how to make a fun hobby, a not fun business.
I heard this story at a trade show where one Stephen Curry traded hands six times in an hour. I appreciate your graphs and a few your missing (postal service, Kurt's card care, supply companies etc.), but as a person who collects, I sure do miss the 1980's.
I'm more of a reseller but I do collect stuff and believe most collectors lose money when they want to sell their stuff.

It'd be interesting to know the actual numbers on how many times the average card is sold. I'd say the majority of cards are consumed the first pass and aren't resold thereafter. But some definitely are a bunch over and over as laid out. It's a wild guess but I'd say the average card is sold less than 1.2 or 1.3 times.

@NEO_Cards_Comics rough estimate? I just know in pokemon at least a lot of the repackers grade their cards themselves and a lot of the non hit cards in those aren't very sellable 😆. 1 million a month ish cards are graded from psa we know from generate I guess we could estimate sales on ebay etc but it becomes hard to estimate the amount of slabs sold in repacks etc on whatnot drip ebay live and so on. Then all the card shops. Eh maybe its 1.5 to 2 I'd be surprised if it was over 2.

The biggest thing the hobby can do without is grading. Cards survived before grading. Then PSA came along and tricked people into thinking upcharging is good. Sounds like Gordon Gecko. Greed is good. Should be the official ultra modern hobby motto.

It’s not about psa use any of the big 4 I don’t care. The amount of scans that would occur with out grading would be insane.
I am strictly an end collector. Basically been collecting the same player since 1988 with a few other additions along the way. Anyone that is not doing something similar in nature needs to rethink their involvement in this "Hobby". It's a HOBBY, it's not an investment, not a glorified modern day gambling adventure, etc. Anyone who is not a collector has contributed to the downturn of "The hobby". Prices of products is too high and breakers are the absolute worst. Several content creators only add to the worsening of the hobby. Sorry if this sounds negative, but it's the Truth.
