It is not right to say that only after Anand Chennai developed as a Chess city. In fact even before him Chennai had a great chess culture and produced champions.
Started with Manuel Aaron (who defeated Max Euwe to become India"s IM. Thereafter there have been several brilliant players whose success as National Champpions inspired chess enthusiasts. Raja Ravishekar, TN Prameswaran and V Ravikunar had a great indluence in many youngsters taking up to Chess. Ravi Kumar on his own participated in European tourneys and became an internationally high rated player. He lost steam due to lack of chances but for which he would have become a GM.
Anand had financial support of his family which helped him as well. Of course he was so good that he achieved his GM title at 18.
His achievements catapulted many a youngster to believe they can have Chess as a career.
Many young GMs are today struggling to get a proper career after they get into a wall at around elo2500.
Job opportunities must improve in govt and companies to sustain.

The science behind Gukesh victory. Indians do well in chess cause India is a 3rd world country and indians are hungry for success. The rest of the world of competing nations are not 3rd world hungry as India.
So what happens is you get people from south India who are genetically and mathematically superior in intellect from the north indians and you see this phenomenal rise of south indians in chess mastery especially from the state of Tamil Nadu. You however don't see this among the north indians despite all their efforts . Compared to south , north indians are 2nd ,3rd rated players. And data don't lie. And statistically Tamils dominate the chess scene .
The rest of the south are offshoots of the Tamils genetically .South Indians are a distinctly different ethnic race despite the general term Indians. This is quite often forgotten, that south indians and especially the tamils come from an ancient civilization unlike rest of India
In conclusion india will continue to do well in chess and predominate in the south but we won't see this in the north. We can expect more Gukesh, Pragg and Erigasi in the coming days !
