    • @ThePaulv12
      @ThePaulv12 5 років тому

      You could but you'd have to gear the engine speed down to accomodate the propellor speed.
      Here's the thing - propellor tips go supersonic when they go too fast and they stop producing thrust.
      This motor will make good power but only at high rpm. So, a gearbox is required that is strong and durable enough to keep the motor and propellor both happy.
      Then one has to consider the thrust to weight ratio. You see retro fitting an engine to a plane can be done, but if that motor isn't purpose buily for an aircraft then all this other complex stuff starts to become apparent. For example cooling systen, fuel tank size, centre of gravity change as the fuel burns, weight of water, fuel delivery system and how manycbatteries you can carry. Fitting all of this into a P51 would probably require a purpose built plane. This can all be done for sure. But there's this one other thing - it's never going to sound like a Merlin because a Merlin only turns 3000ish rpm and this might have to turn 15000rpm, so the loveley forboding roar of your rc P51 might be off a bit.
      In the meantime i have link to the sound of a motor you might like. Its is a 1.5litre supercharged V16 from waaaaaay waaaaay back in 1952:

    I bet theres more than a few guys that cannot wait to put one of these into a large scale rc p51. I too am glad to see somebody run the engine till it floats the valves or at least show what it can do. That thing will be unstoppable with a slightly higher valve spring rating or dual springs. Very nice piece of engineering and machine work!

      why the fuck not

    • @ThePaulv12
      @ThePaulv12 5 років тому +1

      Because it's too small for the weight of a Go Kart. In order to get it to go, you'd have to gear it really low then It would only go at 5-10kph. You'd have to gear it low otherwise it would stall since it makes its power at high rpm.
      It may produce 10hp as some say on here, but you have to remember a motor is an air pump. Using the air pump analogy, a larger single cylinder engine can pump the same amount of air as a smaller one, it is just the smaller one needs more rpm to do it. So a Briggs and Stratton (boring I know) with 10hp and 350cc puts the avilable power in a range suited to a Go Kart ie 1000-3500rpm whereas that V12 probably idles at about 2500rpm and doesn't make its 10hp until 15000rpm and its max torque in an rpm range the single cylinder engine does necessitating complex power robbing torque multiplying gears to put the power where it's needed.
      There is a saying in engineering, Form Follows Function. Considering 10hp engines so we're comparing apples with apples the Briggs probably is the better option.
      If you experimented you'd find this out - I'm just saving you the expense and anguish and ruining your dream in the process.

      @@ThePaulv12 Could totally put it on an electric kart though, not for power, just for the sound haha!

    • @ThePaulv12
      @ThePaulv12 5 років тому +1

      @@liamscott8761 how about have it turning a generator which in turn powers an electric motors to turn wheels? That would work but wouldn't go too fast because the faster the electric motor driving it turns the more it resists accepting current from the generator. This is because it starts generating its own current which opposes the current from the generator. The way around it is to use 2x electric motors then as you get faster switch them from series to parallel. It's called transition :)
