    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

    I'd like to show this video to my art teacher and make him realise that good teachers don't talk down on students.

      Hell yeah!! WTF art teacher guy?? (mine is a guy…an old guy). He’s a good teacher, knows his stuff, I’ve learned lots but…..

      All art teachers i had for 15 were dog doo. All incredibly rude and refused to explain what would make your art better, leaving to to do that for yourself… I tried to take notes and take their basics and teach myself

      Also, you are forever a student. Even when you’re a teacher you should have the open mind of a student because things are ever-changing and you can always learn.
      I have learned so much from those I teach

      Casually send them a link to the video with a "question" about something in the video that will force your teacher to watch the video to be able to answer your question.
      If they are a decent teacher they will watch it. If they won't even take the time to watch it... drop the class and skip the ego fest.

    When you talk about enhancing the colour compliments, seeing the comparison between the photos and your paintings was a huge help. It was a light-bulb moment for me! Thank you!

    Chris, two comments:
    1. Your voice is pleasant to listen to. I’ve dismissed dozens of instructors because their voice and delivery are irritating, or poor, and distract from the content. 👏👏
    2. Your content is wise, and direct. You don’t waste my time telling me what you are going to tell me. You just lay it out, 1,2,3…. Thank you!
    Much appreciated! Excellent content!
    Mary

    Hi Chris! Thank you so much for this!
    I wanted to mention something on the part about drawing: I’m not sure if you’ve ever mentioned or whatever, but I can always find drawing errors when I hold a drawing up to a mirror. I don’t know why that is, whether it’s because you’re looking at it from more of an outside perspective or what. But just thought I’d toss that out there for anyone who might find that it works for them too! 💕

    Chris, thanks so much for the in depth explanation to get our paintings to pop. It is amazing how a tiny change can make a difference. I agree about the drawing, if it is not accurate, it will show regardless of good is painted. I have a request, can you make a video about how candle light affects the skin reflection. Thanks again. Blessings and take care.

    Pop is like stand out but there's different types of popping or pop. Like adding the lines on the edge of the water hitting the beach makes it pop like it's coming out at you. Another form of pop is when a wrestler enters the arena and the crowd pops.

    How do I become more confident with painting, like I paint a pretty good painting and then two days after Im afraid to paint a new one cause I think I'll screw it up...

    • @deegee8645
      @deegee8645 2 роки тому +3

      pretty, schmitty.
      paint on cardboard & rip it up.
      then do another, and rip that one up too.
      keep doing this, until your paintings are any good.

    • @RatusMax
      @RatusMax 2 роки тому +10

      Embrace screwing up. I did and I use every screw up as a learning lesson. I started to build a foundation of skills with them. What went well, what went wrong. How to adjust my skills accordingly to tackle the problem. Every failure you encounter, you'll learn where you are deficient. Do not try to avoid it. Go straight to your deficiencies and learn how to deal with it.
      When I first started, I would keep lying to myself midway through the painting knowing it looked nothing like the reference. I spent hours trying to fix the problem to no avail. I sat there and looked at why it was so horrible and what went wrong at some point. Then I decided right there to paint it again. It came out far better. That's when I realized I was on to something.
      My #1 lesson in life is to fail as much and as fast as possible so long as it doesn't catastrophically injure/kill me. No amount of learning and instruction can replace actually moving your hands and experiencing it. This is why when one gains knowledge about a technique or skill, they don't implement it perfectly at first. This is NORMAL! The person imparting the information has already gone through the trial and error of trying the techniques.
      You know I was one of those people who was afraid of failing because society for some reason doesn't want you to think failure is good. Failure is the best damn thing that happened to me. It broke me away from simply following the path others took and playing safe. It gave me the ability to master anything I learn. I am not limited to thinking in a way that inhibits me from learning. I know I will fail for some time as I learn the subject. That is perfectly normal. Nobody....NOBODY wakes up knowing the information.
      Geniuses are not born. Prodigies are not born. I learned this when I was sitting in physics class and this person was in sophomore year already getting interviews from MIT and HARVARD for PhD programs. His father was an Electrical Engineer. Had books given to him as a child to read. Parents bought him things to experiment with. Me? I was just a regular lower middle-class person who played video games from the bargain bin.
      It was then I realized, he had a head start at this stuff. I can reach him, but it will take me some time. Yes I am flopping in this class while he is getting A's all over the place, but I need to put in the time. I failed with a D the first time, and passed with a C the second time by the way lol. Now looking back at that class, it was so easy. The pressure of having to pay the tuition and work a job was the reason why I flopped so hard. I never put my hand out to him or anyone and said "help me". I thought I was in it alone.
      So although we will experience failure throughout life, even though there are some people who want to see us fail; there are always people who want to pick you back up and get you on your feet. Fail. Fail hard. Just make sure it doesn't kill you!

    • @NickLMears
      @NickLMears 2 роки тому

      Practice a lot and don't worry about it. I've learned a lot from my failures. Half the stuff I paint is redone from scratch or painted over.
