4th grade flashbacks are real right now...
Yes! That's when I learned to play the recorder and I was introduced to the clarinet. I played that until I got braces after 6th grade, and then switched to oboe.

I learnt to play in year 1

I thought it was a ripoff flute, but now I know it’s more like I clarinet cause I play one 😂
It is actually a good instrument if you know how to correctly play it.
Ps:wooden one has much better sound.

As a person who's been playing the recorder for 11 years now this has been the first time seeing someone realize that a recorder is not just a stick with holes :') by far my fav video. Keep practicing! 🤧
Well that’s just unnecessarily rude.

Asyris, this is exactly the kind of excuse of a person who does not know how to play it
Asyris of the Sword Lands *plastic* recorders are crap, but legitimate, wooden ones, like that girl was playing, are real instruments with their own history and music. Schools just started used plastic ones as a cheap way to teach kids music.

I actually love the Recorder, especially the tenor. Nothing like having 900 years of music to choose from!
The best instrument of them all is the otamatone
Definitely. The best classical instrument of them all.
I really really need one.
I knew this well before 'they' knew. Recorders are great for mediëval music and even baroque (I think).
The recorder was also used somewhat extensively in the soundtrack for the Harry Potter films.
Yea there are baroque recorder concertos out there and they used to be a very well respected instrument (still are of course). Then the Americans found out in the 70's I think how to make these easily with plastic and thus music classes with recorders were born...
@@SirJeff The funny thing is, we were issued real wooden ones but it didn't improve or awake our musical skills (much).
Recorders were actually used a lot during Baroque and Rennaissance times. There is soooo much beautiful music written for it!
Recorder was used before transverse flute became the instrument in that range, so up until the mid 18th century.

Summery: 98.880 of the time we were terrible.
The recorder has a tendency to sound terrible when one blows very hard into it and when no articulation is used. Unfortunately primary school children have a tendency to blow very hard into the instrument and teachers have a tendency to forget to teach articulation. The worst possible combination of tendencies.
I wolda been in the other 2.120 % i played the recorder top in my class last year.

Recorder is very, very common in lots of baroque and early music. If they told me that in school, I probably would have been much more interested.
There's some rather beautiful recorders out there as well and they can get just as expensive as any other classical instrument.
The ambulance recorder sound 👌 I used to do that, everyone did. And that naruto playing 👌👌😁🔥🔥💯💯
funny story: when i was 5 i wanted to learn the recorder (according to my mom. i don't remember this) but there weren't any spots left bc it was such a popular instrument so i ended up taking violin lessons instead (i do remember those). a year later we moved city and i went to a music focused elementary school where i finally did get the chance to play the recorder. ended up playing it for 9 years and for a while it was my favorite instrument out of the 3 i was learning (all of the above + piano)
i'm very tempted to grab my recorders and try playing that piece but it's past 12:30 am and i have neighbors who love to complain about noise whoops
(also i love how everyone's always like "oh recorder is such an easy instrument!!!1!1!!1!" but chances are that when you hand them one they won't even manage to blow into it correctly, much less get a decent sound out of it as proven in this video hahaha)
My recorder was just another thing for me to fiddle with while I worked my brains on tough math questions
What am I doing I need start my project that’s due tomorrow
ling ling can play 40 recorders at the same time and make it sound good
it's 4:06am and i am watching 2 grown men play 'hot cross buns' on cheap plastic recorders...
The only thing I remember about playing the recorder is being sad because my brother (who had to learn the year before me) got a cool blue recorder and all I got was an ugly off-white one.

We play something similar called a tin whistle in our school band
Long story coming up: When I was a kid i played the recorder for years (at least it felt like several years) it was so fun and I got really good at it, had a fancy wooden one that sounded ok and everything, we did shows in front of an audience quite a lot with all the different sizes of recorders in a big group, it was lots of fun, and then one day the teacher said: ok recorder classes doesn't get any higher and now it is time to switch to a "real instrument" if you want to be in an orchestra... and I was kinda crushed bc I did not know!! I had never heard or seen a real orchestra and which instruments was in it so it felt like I wasted all that practice for nothing.
I then said to my parents I wanted to play the violin or the piano. Then you had to take private classes in town and my parents did not want to pay for that. Couple of years later when I was maybe 12 I said I still wanted to play the violin and wanted one for christmas, christmas came and instead of a violin I got a guitar because violin was "too difficult" and the guitar is for beginners so if I had the interest to learn guitar I would get to play the violin after that.. I gave the guitar a try but I was not intrested (because I did not want to play the guitar so when my fingers hurt and it got difficult etc of course I had no motivation to push through), then the guitar collected dust (and my dad shamed me for it.. "why do you not appreciate and play the nice guitar I bought") until I sold it to a friend who really wanted to learn. My dad also let me hear that for years afterwards "it is so rude to get rid of a gift".
Did not play an instrument at all in the following years until now (26 years old) because I do this inner journey thing right now where I try everything I wanted to try as a kid but couldn´t. So if there is anything I still wonder about or feel like doing I just go and try it to "be true to my inner child". So a couple of weeks ago I ordered a Violin and it has been so fun! Of course it sounds like crap and is so difficult but it still feels so right because it fits my mental image of what it would be like. I have also learnt to snowboard and started doing rock climbing. I have stopped listened to people saying that I already have enough hobbies etc because it is a big part of me that I simply love to experiment and learn new things.
Moral of the story: Follow your urges more as long as it doesn´t do any harm. If you have a shy kid, try to really ask them what they want and listen because they might have all these dreams that they keep to themselves. It is never to late to learn something new and difficult because if you do it for the right reasons you will be super motivated.
Let's get to 10 million subs to save editor-san and our own hearing
Wow Brett actually play it well!!
I was in a recorder group in school for 3 years straight. The teacher asked us (basically the entire school) to play a song, I think it was Mary had a little lamb, and who could play it less terrible got to join, and, hey, I got in. We didn’t even learned the notes as B, A ,G. More of TI, LA, SO. So now I don’t remember the basics, lol.

It has to be a global thing, like a plot for every school in the world to traumatize children
That Sibelius recorder concerto was something else mate...
I tried to play the recorder in third grade, and then i found out i had asthma. I tried to play the piano in tenth. This makes me wanna try again. Pretty sure i still have them.
I played the recorder for 4 years(from age 6 to 10) and for me it was a great instrument to start!i learned to read notes and got some musical experience. When i was ten i wanted to start violin so i quit recorder. But the recorder helped me a lot.

Damn Girl 😂😂😂
back in my days there were some fucking grade kindergarten-1>7 prodigies at the recorder meanwhile i couldn't even do 1 small part of literally every practice song and there was even a competition the music teacher set up where we had to see who could be the best player and play songs perfectly and i failed completely, not even passing to level 1 throughout the whole entire year and forward yet even during those days while i tried practicing everyday and even brett and eddy did better than me trying to play the recorder but the only good part about recorder in primary school is that we could take the recorders home at the end of year 7 and if we had the choice to- which i did so -earrape every family member and neighbour whenever we wanted to, yes it's probably all dirty right now with cockroaches inside it eating away at the plastic so it should be very tasty to play too bad that we don't learn recorder in class anymore oh and i also forget to mention, there were actual people performing in the annual september 1 talent shows and also while doing a live musical performance there were good recor-.. recordists?

I am from Amsterdam. She had the same recorder teacher as I had when we were little. I remember her being 5 and playing a tango by heart after her first couple lessons. She also did the highest level of highschool and a retired conservatory recorder teacher came back because he wanted to teach her.
Always have been a little jealous, but proud too. Someone from my city :D hehe.
A recorder prodigy! Very likely she quickly memorized songs and could sight read well. Everyone has some gifts. Her's is apparent.
Interesting, thanks for the info.
I'm so glad there's someone doing the instrument some justice. I'm in no way as good as her, but I can play quite well and play traditional Chinese music with it. I always feel it's a bit unfair that people diss this instrument. It can actually sound good
@@Losshe I find it's generally mocked by how cheap you can get them and how nearly every kid learns it in school. It's not that the instrument is trash, but it's because it's cheap to buy and easy to learn (but hard to master like she plays). Even more expensive high-end recorders that I've seen, the soprano ones at least, cost only like $30. You can't buy many other instruments for that cheap!
@Noemi ITALY Exactly. Retail price doesn't affect the instrument in a negative way; it actually makes it better since it exposes more children to playing a musical instrument, which I think is very cool.
I actually played recorder for 3 years when I was younger and GOT GOOD AT IT, it can be a great instrument if played by someone who knows what they're doing. Look up Pablo Collado. When not being played by 7-year-olds it's a pretty nice instrument.
Unless played by a 7 year old prodigy.
THANK U FOR SAYING THAT IVE BEEN PLAYING FOR 7 YEARS AND IT SOUNDS GOOD
Also it's probably one if not the oldest dedicated instrument, bar smashing on rocks rhythmically, so it's quite an important instrument, historically. I respect that.
Me too I’ve been playing the alto and the soprano recorder for 5 years and I really like it
When the 7 year old doesn't play on a piece of plastic with holes in it, it sounds suddenly a lot nicer. I mean no instrument sounds good at the beginning, but most recorders played in school are the equivalent of violins for 50 dollars. It is a challange to play nicely on those "instruments" in any case.
Is it bad that after this I suddenly felt inspired to bring my crappy recorder out after 7 years. So today I ended up procrastinating and practiced for 37 hours today in my living room and now I am an OP recorder player *yeet*
SAME HAHA. I'm just constantly covering vampire weekend's songs now (surprisingly, they sound pretty good in recorder)
Yet if it is a wooden recorder, it probably died. As I understood to much moist will kill it. You need to break it in five minutes at a time and then when it is all settled you still can only play it for so long before you may seriously harm it. Then again anybody who can break the fabric of time by putting no less then 37 hours in a day, probably can also circumflex any laws of nature.
I can’t tell if you just got massively wooshed or you’re going along with the joke
It's not enough

I'd argue that the recorder is actually a great practice instrument because, for woodwind players, it teaches the importance of steady breathing and many of the fingerings for the recorder are identical when going from it to the clarinet. Obviously, the clarinet has far more available notes, but the recorder is still a great starter instrument, especially for schools where they can't afford to constantly replace lost trumpets and flutes, or when timmy sits on and dents the crap out of his horn.
Totally agree. The only reason for earrape is the wrong breathing and fingering.
*Dammit Timmy!*
Not only for starters, but also a professional instrument as it can be harder like any other instruments. Usually a better instrument for beginners is the melodica
Eww u nasty
Don’t finger things
It's also good for practice at home. Neighbours would complaint about much louder instruments, but the recorder can always get away with the 'it's for school' explanation.
