Just think of Mass Effect like the original Star Wars trilogy. First game was fresh, new and something special. Second game is the best in the franchise and took everything to new heights. The third has a few obvious flaws(ending = ewoks) but in the end it's still most of what you always loved and even if it's not as good as 2 you're glad you stuck with it and invested in the franchise.
I finished ME3 only recently (I know, I know...), and watching this review - I have no idea what are those downsides you are talking about. Even if they were there, I was so awed by the game, I didn't even notice them. The only thing I regretted about mass effect 3 is that its over... BUT WHAT AN END! I wish I had never played the series so that I could experience it all over again for the first time.
Just finished the triology with all DLC last night... i played it a year ago and with 3 i didnt even know anything anymore so for some reason it felled all new again
BigBadBeef The thing that really upset people when it first came out was the ending. As long as you have the extended cut DLC, it's totally fine (and people who say it isn't are just entitled whiners and need to shut up and stop blaming Bioware -- it was EA's decision to push the game out before it was ready). Anyway, adding Leviathan, From Ashes, Citadel, and the Extended Cut makes the game go from being great to amazing, but even without all that DLC, it's super solid. I think fans just had too many expectations after the first game, and there was no way ME3 could've possibly lived up to them all. But yes, I absolutely agree that it's a fantastic game.
It was a beautiful, intense, action packed, heart-breaking and insanely entertaining series to play through. I was shedding tears at the end of the third installment. Bioware did an amazing job despite the flaws, especially when it came to making is love the characters and feel immerse in such a huge universe. This trilogy will always have a special place in my heart.
the only regret I have about this game is playing them. Because now there is no more others to play. definitely my favorite video game of all time. plus on PC the graphics are outstandingly better and alot of the bugs are fixed. Throughout my 100+ hours of combined gameplay with this series I've only encountered a bug a couple of times. Nowhere near game-breaking or mission-restarting worthy though.
@Aoleon umm, no not really; depending on your galactic readiness bar you can save earth AND shepard lives, theirs a cut scene at the end of the credits if your galactic readiness is above 4000.
Ok, aside from this advertising video get some OBJECTIVE points: BAD SIDES - False advertising - Day one DLC (also the later ones were bad comparing to ME2 add ons) - Beta state of the game recognizable especially in the beginning of the game. - Importing the characters does NOT WORK and given the fact that you spent tens of hours with them investing in the game first two sequels that is unforgiving! - Horrible faces, animations and lip sync (Anderson remined me of Muppet Show for example) - Lame dialogues without any creativity and passion (especially in the beginning and the end) - Last stand sucked big time (not even tens of characters facing the reapers - REALLY?? That is the army of the GALAXY??) - Really bad Quest management system - Lots of cheap tricks (like Tali´s face for example) - Lots of strange (or just bad) character behaviors in the story - Indoctrination theory was genius as it fixed many holes in logic (magic existance of that kid from the start for example), and that is final minus for them not going with it. Instead they gave extended cut that barely changed anything - so disappointing. - Oh, did I mentioned the ENDING?? GOOD SIDES - Awesome gameplay filed with options - Great visuals - Loading times - Some epic moments (if just we had more of these) - Great Art design - Quality voice overs Conclusion; Yes, overall it is still very good experience but this game was rushed badly and needed to be in development for at least one more year. My score 7 / 10
Custom ones don't work at all. Hell, even default ones changed a bit, especially female Shepard. I didn't developed a character for dozens of hours just to not being able to finish the story with them in ME3. I'll never forgive them for that.
@shortanimationz yes he does, if you looked at the last second of the best ending, you can see shepard under the rocks. he then breathes in, and then it goes to credits
It is highly recommended that you play previous games in the series to get the full context, and pretty much get the full experience. If nothing else, you can download the interactive comics that basically condense the series down to where you get the basic gist of things and make the big decisions (interactive comic is included in the Wii U version if you wish to get that version).
@JudgeMagisterRobert - The song is called "Protectors of the Earth" by Two Steps from Hell (2SFH). FYI, 2SFH have done many trailers for the Mass Effect series - from the Mass Effect 2: Fight For The Lost theatrical trailer, the ME3 Femshep trailer and the ME3 Take Earth Back trailer.
I've played it to level 16 and so far so good! The game is beautiful, tons of diverse characters (some new and many familiar), great story and lore. Even though the whole reaper threat is a little repetitive they still make it work. Tons of customizing options (even the type of game experience you want) and I've had none of the game or camera glitches mentioned in this video review. 9/10.
@Andriykobin I read in an interview with OXM that enemies have more AI patterns and use different tactics on harder difficulties. So if anything, Gamespot played on a lower difficulty.
@Shrapnel1235 the reason why people hated the ending, is because their total military force at the end was low, and that you need to play the game twice in order to get the perfect ending, where shep survives. i think that bioware will make an extra ending for dlc. i think that the game will cheat itself so that when dlc comes, it will let you survive automatically
anyone know what the song is called at the beginning on the video? up to the 0:22 mark. i know its also used in the beginning of Vietnam in HD series that's on the History Channel.
If you get your final army over 4000 or 5000 (i'm not sure which because i was over 5000), the third choice appears. It is the only choice that doesn't kill loads of whatever. Your galactic readiness can only be increased by playing multiplayer and it shows what percentage of your final army actually is able to be used. For example, if my rating was 5000 and my galactic readiness was at 50%, then my army at the final battle will only be 2500. I heard if you get the level over 10000 sheperd lives
@iTZzCh3wb4cCa The reason Joker and the crew were smiling at the end, was because they didn't know Shepard died. They were passing through the mass relays at the same time that Shepard died.
The endings separately aren't terrible... Its when you see the ending for the second time, then you realize that the endings were cut and pasted, re using footage
@33k72 That's one ending that you could encounter. I thought that too, but you have to get your Rediness up and your forces around 5000 to get the best ending
@Aoleon just go around the galaxy and do side quests, if you maxed out levels and did just about everything from ME1 to 2 (like i did) it'll help you out a bit with missions and play the multiplayer to raise your galactic readiness level to the percentage you feel is adequate. pretty much, O.C.D is your best friend if you want a good ending.
@TacoTown254 Totally agree with you about the "rest of my crew" part. I think I remember my crew joining me when I ran at the Citadel beam. During that run, everyone was supposed to have died (except for 2 obvious bare survivals). How did they end up back on the Normandy? Even if they barely survived like I did, how did the Normandy extract them? That Reaper was absolutely wrecking shit.
Mass Effect 3's biggest problem is more a problem with the whole series. The Reaper plotline was never given the nuance and depth of the smaller conflicts. Doesn't ruin the game for me though.
"packs from which you choose a single item"? and where are these packs from which you choose a single item?:) All the packs I know of are the recruit pack, the veteran pack, and the specter pack, ALL of which give you everything that the pack unlocks
@sivuh5 Maybe, but the outcomes were virtually the same. Earth destroyed and Shepard dead. Does that sound like a victory? In the ME 1 and 2 your actions determined whether you win or lose, but in ME3 you lose no matter what you do.
I love this game so much. Just finished my first play through with ME1 and ME2. Glad I took my time to enjoy every bit of it and manage to save my whole crew. Looking forward to finishing the trilogy
@jordiekirk Did you play any of the earlier Mass Effect games? Coz that's exactly how I felt when I first played Mass Effect but after continued playing it kind of grew on me
Eyup. not sure what you mean about the reaper threat being repetitive though. I think that they make the game so much more epic. Like this one mission when helping a base fight off husks on this moon, while, in the background there are these massive reapers destroying things in their way. Bioware did an excellent job of making the reaper threat seem like more than the ordinary bad guy.
I'm going to be honest, I've never played a single Mass Effect game but have always been intrigued by the series. If I were to pick up ME3 and play it, would I be missing out on a lot of very useful info from the previous games? Or is it something anyone can pick up and play? When it comes to RPG franchises I usually try to start from the first game, but not sure how vital that is for this series.
dang, thats odd, me1 took me 50 hours (because of the mako missions), 2 took me 37 hours including dlc, 3 took me 35 hours not including dlc other than javik's quest.
I probably should have played ME2 but I didn't. So, should I be an adept class or vanguard class? Do adepts really suck with guns? Are they that bad with weapons that they'd never use them? Can you level their gun damage up?
did you do any side missions or talk with your crew? each game is around 40 hours long for completionists. and when it comes to mass effect, its good to be a completionist.
Have to disagree about the A.I. Squad members die a lot less and seems to help out more in battle, and enemies use grenades and flank often rather than just sitting behind cover and popping out every few seconds.
@mariosmashfann The multiplayer effects the singleplayer but it only matters if you didn't get full Military support in singleplayer as in you didn't do anything other than the main missions. I did everything in the game at least as much as I could including exploring solar systems and getting support from scanning curtain scan able planets.
@lildickheads Regardless the sheer energy from them would still result in a super nova type explosion wouldn't it?Is it actually explained in the game?
yes, you should at least play ME2 before ME3 you will be introduced to some of the backstory that is very important to the third game as well as the experience you gain in the second game and the character you create in ME2 can be imported to ME3 so you can keep the same skill set and start out with some upgrades on your powers arleady as well as you team.
At least the ending gave us a good possibility of more mass effect *troll face*. But in all honesty was I the only one who saw the scene after the credits? Because that scene was pretty awesome
Before I saw the promotions, I allowed myself to imagine how the story would be resolved. I wanted Sheppard to go to "dark space" and find out what the hell that is exactly. I thought one plausible way to conclude the story was perhaps to make the reapers evolve in their thinking--no outright defeat. Perhaps a symbolic victory against them in dark space would have made them turn to another corner of the universe for resources. A race of benevolent reaper-level creatures could have been--fuck it.
I think that the criticism is mostly accurate for the console versions. In the PC I have never had a glitch, AI was good and so on, but mostly the Citadel was FUN! You can actually interact with the events there ^^
@Musicdudez since tali and mordin died on yours were there just different people playing there roll i mean i dont see any other salarian sacrificing himself for the cure
@Aoleon their isn't really a good ending per say, that's why i re-posted saying that i meant "different" ending. but their are endings where you can save earth. (ign.com/wikis/mass-effect-3/Endings)
I have heard a lot of reviews for Mass Effect 3 from fans of the series. And all of them say the same thing “Great atmosphere, great characters, good game play and a horrible ending. So it should be understood that up to the ending was great.” which is like saying “I spent a day at Disney Land even though at the end of the day I saw my car was stolen. I should remember up until I realized my car was stolen I had a wonderful time."
I am tryn to see if I can change the look of my character mid-way through the game, if that is possible can someone help me, cause I can't figure it out
I hate that they had to add DLC to do it, BUT - if you take all of the DLC into account, this is the best game in the series. Is it depressing? Sure. But we knew that the Reapers were going to be basically impossible to defeat, and they were. Combine that with great graphics, story, best soundtrack ever, and improved gameplay and this game is unbelievably good.
@RandomHiMfan Actually, I always equip the alternate outfit before going on missions but it turns out to be the same outfit. Maybe I have a glitch or something
I think this is the best review ever done by GameSpot
Best video game trilogy ever.
On God
Dead Space

UnknownPenguin Hope it's more like Force Awakens.
Is it a bird? No It's A Penguin it did:(
except.... 2 is the worst one by far
And then Andromeda came along and...well, there's your prequel trilogy.
@@Z50nemesis Contrarian take.
I finished ME3 only recently (I know, I know...), and watching this review - I have no idea what are those downsides you are talking about. Even if they were there, I was so awed by the game, I didn't even notice them.

Kevin VanLord is the BEST Review LORD on GameSpot indeed!

Yes, because the quality of an entire series is solely based on the final entry's ending.
@Aoleon umm, no not really; depending on your galactic readiness bar you can save earth AND shepard lives, theirs a cut scene at the end of the credits if your galactic readiness is above 4000.
this is one of the best rpg i ever played in my life!
You can modify both in the bottom level of the Normandy, but it isn't until after the first few hours that you have access to this area.
Ok, aside from this advertising video get some OBJECTIVE points:

Conclusion; Yes, overall it is still very good experience but this game was rushed badly and needed to be in development for at least one more year.
My score 7 / 10
I like you

@shortanimationz yes he does, if you looked at the last second of the best ending, you can see shepard under the rocks. he then breathes in, and then it goes to credits
@mariosmashfann the Multiplayer affects the Galaxy readiness for the final space battle in SP.
It is highly recommended that you play previous games in the series to get the full context, and pretty much get the full experience. I just came here for mental satisfaction of a game should be reviewed after watching the mass effect legendary edition review of gamespot.
It has 1.3k likes and 1k dislikes.
I think the guy taking wasn't the guy who put the video together. thats the editors fault.
@Andriykobin I read in an interview with OXM that enemies have more AI patterns and use different tactics on harder difficulties. So if anything, Gamespot played on a lower difficulty.

I heard if you get the level over 10000 sheperd lives
not sure the name of the song but its by "Two steps from hell". They've got other rather epic songs, worth to check out....
Why hasn't a single reviewer mentioned how they nearly removed the dialogue wheel as a whole? And that when you get it there are only 2 options?
@iTZzCh3wb4cCa The reason Joker and the crew were smiling at the end, was because they didn't know Shepard died. They were passing through the mass relays at the same time that Shepard died.
@Aoleon Please do a video and post it here of the "happy ending" where Earth and Shepard survive as I want to see it. Thanks!
The endings separately aren't terrible... Its when you see the ending for the second time, then you realize that the endings were cut and pasted, re using footage
@33k72 That's one ending that you could encounter. I thought that too, but you have to get your Rediness up and your forces around 5000 to get the best ending

Doesn't ruin the game for me though.
1.) Do you type blindfolded?
2.) The Extended Cut fixed the ending.
@Rajtis Not really, it's your own choices as to weather or not a character dies, everyone shown in the video can be saved I'm pretty sure.
I actually think the multiplayer maps are taken from the Singleplayer maps, that would make more sense right?
I love how Gamespot adds some of the dramatic sequences to their reviews, although their analysis isn't nearly as in depth as ign.
I think in years to come this game will become a classic.
you could not have been more right my friend
what number on the soundtrack is that tune at the beginning of the trailer??
Biggest problems so far is that you can't mine planets anymore and there isn't many dialogue options.
The tone for the review is very serious it's seems that a lot of important characters died and by that same tone it sound like sheppard did too.
If George Lucus never gave us Star Wars the Mass Effect universe would be the most deepest and amazing sci-fi story ever told to date.
"packs from which you choose a single item"? and where are these packs from which you choose a single item?:) All the packs I know of are the recruit pack, the veteran pack, and the specter pack, ALL of which give you everything that the pack unlocks
Excellent review, very fair and well thought out. Makes me even more impatient to get out of work and go pick up my copy!
@sivuh5 Maybe, but the outcomes were virtually the same. Earth destroyed and Shepard dead. Does that sound like a victory? In the ME 1 and 2 your actions determined whether you win or lose, but in ME3 you lose no matter what you do.
2:45 lol that was not a team mate.It was a hologram of edi.
Especially with the new extended cut fixing all the issues people had with the original ending.
That's actually not true, there was no "dark matter" ending leaked, they intentionally made the ending that way
I didnt expect the ending to be sunshine and rainbows but it was pretty bad after such an amazing lead up and such a great story.
I love this game so much. Just finished my first play through with ME1 and ME2. Glad I took my time to enjoy every bit of it and manage to save my whole crew. Looking forward to finishing the trilogy
TobyTheWookiee ENDING FUCKING TRASH THO DUMB ASS LOGIC
@jordiekirk Did you play any of the earlier Mass Effect games? Coz that's exactly how I felt when I first played Mass Effect but after continued playing it kind of grew on me
no mass effect about shepard was a trilogy
2:22 what armor is that?
Im just here because the legendary edition is coming. I haven't played any of them. Looks like I have some good games to play here real soon!
Why? Sure there where too many enemies but I think it built up the tension very well.
completed the game even with happy ending mod.
now I can peacefully die
Eyup. not sure what you mean about the reaper threat being repetitive though. I think that they make the game so much more epic. @Sunbreaker7 Isn't Casey Hudson canadian? and isn't Bioware canadian as well?
dang, thats odd, me1 took me 50 hours (because of the mako missions), 2 took me 37 hours including dlc, 3 took me 35 hours not including dlc other than javik's quest.
Vietnam in HD music at the start?
Could someone please tell me where you can modify your weopons and armor ingame??
Have to disagree about the A.I. Squad members die a lot less and seems to help out more in battle, and enemies use grenades and flank often rather than just sitting behind cover and popping out every few seconds.
@Wolfrain789 How do you get it that high? I thought mine was maxed out as the blue bar went all the way across (2500?)
@mariosmashfann The multiplayer effects the singleplayer but it only matters if you didn't get full Military support in singleplayer as in you didn't do anything other than the main missions. I did everything in the game at least as much as I could including exploring solar systems and getting support from scanning curtain scan able planets.
Whats the music called at the begining of the review?
@lildickheads Regardless the sheer energy from them would still result in a super nova type explosion wouldn't it?Is it actually explained in the game?
Can someone please tell me what the song at the beginning of this video is? I've been looking for so long with no luck.
What do you mean you're not sure what I mean about the Reapers being repetitive? They're the main enemies in all three games!
yes, you should at least play ME2 before ME3 you will be introduced to some of the backstory that is very important to the third game as well as the experience you gain in the second game and the character you create in ME2 can be imported to ME3 so you can keep the same skill set and start out with some upgrades on your powers arleady as well as you team.
>When this game hits you, it hits hard.
This isn't Katawa Shoujo.
@WTFisadeeto
yes because arrival continues after the main mass effect campaign
At least the ending gave us a good possibility of more mass effect *troll face*.
But in all honesty was I the only one who saw the scene after the credits? Because that scene was pretty awesome
Before I saw the promotions, I allowed myself to imagine how the story would be resolved. I wanted Sheppard to go to "dark space" and find out what the hell that is exactly. I thought one plausible way to conclude the story was perhaps to make the reapers evolve in their thinking--no outright defeat. Perhaps a symbolic victory against them in dark space would have made them turn to another corner of the universe for resources. A race of benevolent reaper-level creatures could have been--fuck it.
does the singleplayer effect the multiplayer in anyway or does the multiplayer effect the campaign in any way
How is that first song called? from 00:01 to 00:22
I think that the criticism is mostly accurate for the console versions. In the PC I have never had a glitch, AI was good and so on, but mostly the Citadel was FUN! You can actually interact with the events there ^^
@ben31uk Did you even play the game, our choices meant nothing, the only thing that changed for the endings was the color of the explosion
@Musicdudez since tali and mordin died on yours were there just different people playing there roll i mean i dont see any other salarian sacrificing himself for the cure
do i have to play the first two to understand the character and story elements
@ironman1793 what were the spoilers? I didn't see any. Everything there I already knew.
@ZPMan10197 You are right they always give highest at 9 but they also give scores way lower than 9
NO! Jack grew her hair back :(
Even though she would never come near my FemShep, I still loved her to bits.
bioware did do a good job by saying if you got that person to die saying you had or could of changed that
that was not a teammate standing on a crate it was the hologram power of edi :|
That ending crippled the game and its lack of replay value will soon be fully realized. I couldn't think of a worse outcome for such a great genre.
Do you guys think that it's bad that I played ME2 before ME1? I watched the ME1 summary though, so I know what went on
@gamespot 2:22 what armor is that?
@Aoleon their isn't really a good ending per say, that's why i re-posted saying that i meant "different" ending. but their are endings where you can save earth. (ign.com/wikis/mass-effect-3/Endings)
that song at the end is so beautiful and haunting
I have heard a lot of reviews for Mass Effect 3 from fans of the series. And all of them say the same thing “Great atmosphere, great characters, good game play and a horrible ending. So it should be understood that up to the ending was great.” which is like saying “I spent a day at Disney Land even though at the end of the day I saw my car was stolen. the ending may not have been the best, but god dammit the journey was amazing!
@Killthreath Without spoiling it to me was it that bad?? I haven't finished the game yet, but I am hoping for an epic conclusion.
@RandomHiMfan Actually, I always equip the alternate outfit before going on missions but it turns out to be the same outfit. Maybe I have a glitch or something
Hey im wondering if there's any spoilers in this review before I watch it
