My second go at it is curing right now. Everyone is fascinated by the first homemade scales.
Thank you again for this. Now folks can have whatever colors they like.👍👍👍💥🔥🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I learned to use wooden spacers on the edges to make sure that it comes out the same thickness all the way around so if you want a quarter inch put four little quarter inch spacers around the edges so that when you clamp it down it’ll all stay at a quarter inch

I appreciate how neat and tidy you were - I've watched a handful of videos about making micarta this evening and they all were such a mess.

Finished my press/box today. Thanks again!!!
I'll be building a few of these box presses. thanks for the tip about taking the box to the disc sander to square everything. That really cleaned mine up better than any woodworking project I've done previously.👍👍👍
Marked my plates like you did too.

I wasn't sure what to expect. Didn't know that micarta was made like that, first of all.
Second… this seems like the easiest way one would go about making the dang thing!
    Super simple.
    Thank you, for sharing!

I'm new to this channel. Curious about making knives and been searching for informative videos. The videos I've seen from you, is informative, relatively short and you show/tell us about your faults, so we can learn from them. Great!!! I'll be following you and will explore your channel.

Mixed color material within the Micarta can add nice sequence of lines to your scales. I won a knife from the UK and the scales were made with 501 Blue Jean Micarta, them scales sure turned out nice, oiling made them standout. If you are going to use different colors when making Micarta you should try and give the scales a palm swell and give it a divot at the bolster end for your thumb, doing this type of work will make your knife handle pop with contrast color lines.

I've been thinking about doing the 501 Jean micarta and some burlap ones. I cant wait to actually put this micarta on the neck knife that will be coming out soon.

I use a lot of "Scotch Brite", it makes excellent Micara and best of all you don't compress it, just let it soak up the resin and set.

First of your vids I've seen. Nicely done. I've worked with epoxy before in furniture and I would definitely recommend buying a clear epoxy. Then the color will always be whatever felt you're using.

spray silocon and dawn dish soap as a serfactant // no more breaking the molds apart they will slide off like butter, a gel coat will make them shine like gems. them if its texture you want just add or router it into the mold you could all so get some checkering files and treat the molds to that, while getting a knew skill . better that way then trying to checker it out of the mold. poly scratches easy. wouldn't want to scate around on it with a file if you had another way .. give it a go.

Hey bud, i subscribe to DIY Easy Crafters also and he uses a press like what you made, but without the boards on the end. He sets it up on a 2×6 or something across the top of an open garbage can so that the resin runs out into the garbage can. Just something to think about. You did a good job man. Oh, think about doubling up each color of felt....like 2 grey and then 2 blue....so on and so forth. Might make the colors show up better

You can wax your forms with beeswax you can get for cheap or just buy a WC wax flange and melt the wax into the wood or composite.
