  • 90 thousand original miles! This is actually a fairly clean example. Yes I know there are nicer ones out there. But for this one to end up in a junkyard, it’s in pretty dang good shape. No rust, not rot, and everything is held together for the most part. Put some lipstick on this pig and take it to the county fair ! Might win first prize !

    Trivia points;
    the instrument panel backlighting was an aqua blue, there is an illuminated ring around the ignition switch, and the car is actually a "Notchback" (hatchback that is styled like a coupe/sedan), the rear seats fold nearly flat
    I had an '92 Dodge Shadow, I loved that little car, utterly reliable

    I actually bought a brand new 1989 Sundance 2.5 turbo RS auto. It was black cherry paint with gun metal dark gray on the bottom portion. It had a burgundy cloth interior. It was a beautiful car, but the build quality was horrendous and more squeaks and rattles than you'd dare imagine. I used a lot of silicone glue to quiet the thing down. For its time it was a very fast little car. I managed to put about 80k miles on it. It was still very pretty and strong and made someone else a great car.

She had gotten it brand new about 9 months before I was born, and it ran like a champ until I think I was almost 13 or 14 years old (I'm 26 now). The steering column fell apart and we didn't have the money or a handyman to repair it so it pretty much got junked. Despite being a kid I remember this car needed very little maintenence and was very dependable! It's a shame because these cars are becoming harder to find through the years.

I remember that I went through 3 set sets of outside door handles, because of the cheap ass plastic they kept breaking off during the freezing weather. I learned how to climb through the hatchback, because both door handles had broken off. At the time I was so glad to get rid of it, because I had just bought a Pontiac Formula. About 2 years ago, back when I was within my first year of using Craigslist, I found a lot of Plymouth Sundances and Pontiac Sunbirds for $300-$800, and because of that, and that I really like 1980s and 1990s cars that not many other people like, I have wanted one since then. Most of the Sunbirds I found were white coupes, and one Sunbird I remember was a red convertible that was $300.

    Be careful on that engine. I had two and both the bolts on the water pump pulley came loose. You can guess what happened with the water pump not spinning correctly. So be sure to check the pulleys and belts periodically. The shadow with 2.5 was much nicer than the Sundance with 2.2 turbo. I enjoyed driving the heck out of both. Unfortunately the valve cover gasket is separate rubber and cork pieces. Where the pieces come together it will leak. Some permatex spray gasket cement helps. Anything else will just squeeze out when assembled. Cheers and nice ride. 😊

    That car is in great condition, too great to be sitting in a junkyard, I hope it gets saved, especially with 98k original miles, two months ago, we finally had to scrap our 1992 Buick Century after the steering column was torn up by vandals, it had around 98k-99k miles on it when we bought it back in 2011, and it had about 130k-135k when it was scrapped, which some people consider low for a 1992 model vehicle, we were all sad to see her go, but at least she went under her own power. :'(

I live in the Southwest Triangle (Northwest Arizona, Southern Nevada, Southeast California) and they are ALL over out here and even have a couple of clubs that just for these cars.

    Most of those cars usually good for 125,000 miles in them before the engine has to be replaced.
    After the motor is replaced the car is usually good for another 125,000 miles till the motor brakes down and ether it has to get a 3rd engine or it would have to go to the dump.

    That white smoke tells the story by itself🤣🤣 You can see that the radiator hoses had been recently replaced due to overheating along with the radiator and thermostat. It's still in remarkable condition for it's age however other than the head being warped. It's going to need a full head overhaul to put it back on the road, and most people looking at a car like this to drive can't afford to pay the bill to fix it right. So that's why it's in a salvage yard

      I saw the exhaust too and I had the same thought. My 95 Acclaim was a Piece Of Shit, 3! Times it was in to Russ Darrow Chrysler in Waukesha Wi for a leaking head and once when they had it THE TRANSMISSION FAILED..Oh I forgot to mention that I bought it at a year old!

    Sister got a 93 Sundance Coupe in the burgundy metallic to replace the 87 Hyundai she got from mom that got badly totalled eventually. It had the 2.5 and it didn't even have the piston slap all of those had. It started out a great little car but quite a bit into its life with us it somehow ate its head gasket and that grooved the block. She ended up putting a good used engine in it for more than the car was worth and shortly afterwards the heater core plugged up and then both windows stopped working and even the air quit. Pretty frustrating so I gave up and eventually she replaced it with a 99 300m. We sold it to my coworker for 300 and he drove it till it yet again blew the head gasket on the new engine about a year after he got it. My step dad had a 87 Shadow and he put a ton of miles on it, piston slap and all. I think he finally got tired of it and they got a nicer, bigger, car but his was almost bullet proof and same 2.5 motor. I don't recall them ever being known for bad head gaskets but the piston slap was a known but non fatal issue for the bigger motor. If you like them the coupe 2 door was a much nicer and sporty looking car but aren't very common even when new.

    Cars with a single exhaust just about always have the fuel filler on the opposite side from the exhaust. The 60s-70s Dart, very much the precursor to the Sundance, was a rare exception.

    The white smoke out the tailpipe might be the headgasket going out, in typical Chrysler 2.2L fashion. That might explain why no one could sell it and it wound up in the scrapyard.

    In my mom’s grand marquis, you can take the key out of the ignition while it is turned on. I don’t think you’re supposed to be able to do that. It’s a ‘96. My great uncle’s lesabre has 97,500 miles or so and the seats are like new just like this car. The lesabre overall is in great shape, but it doesn’t run because my sister was borrowing it like 5 years ago and she didn’t take care of it.

    To manually check if there are any codes on it without a computer, do not start the engine, turn the key to the on then off position 3 times, watch the check engine light blink. The amount of times it blinks will tell you the codes. To find what the codes mean buy a Haynes Sundance Manual repair guide.

    A friend in high school had one and I swear it only lasted as long as it did because his grandparents would spend the money for new transmissions because he'd do Neutral drops for days. I think he went through 3 or 4 Transmissions before he got rid of it because they told him No more. It's still running around here.
