That last line is so goddamned important. It was the central theme of Ender's Game: in order to beat your enemy, you have to empathize and understand them enough to know how they think. Not the bigoted strawman you project onto them. But their real positions, their real values, their true character. And when you do that, the scary thing is, it's hard to hate them. You want to reach an understanding so you'll stop fighting.
Actually, the CBO predicts that the health care overhaul will reduce rather than increase deficits, even FOX News has an article about this on their site. But still, getting closer to universal healthcare is a necessity, I'm glad we're taking steps sooner rather than later.
I'm one of those 'poor people' (I make @ 40 cents more than minimum wage) and, thanks to Obamacare, I am now having my hours cut back so the company doesn't have to give me health care. So not only do I not get the health care but now I I go from @ 30 hours a week to 20. The company will probably have to hire more part time workers. Which reduces unemployment. Food for thought.
Liberal definition- open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values. So Galileo, Descartes, Jenner, Heisenberg, Einstein, Debussy, Shakespeare, Copernicus, Christ... it's a good thing we had all those people that were liberal; that 99.9% of people disagreed with!
you flatter yourself.todays liberals are more interested in legalizing weed. Living at home and being lifelong societal moochers. Not trailblazers or geniuses.
"Liberal definition- open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values." Yes, Chinese liberals are capitalists and their conservatives are communists. American conservatives are classic liberals who value individual liberty and equal opportunity. American liberals are fascist-lite authoritarians who want to regulate everything, except immigration for some reason. It just means you want to change things. It doesn't mean the changes you want are necessarily better.
I’m a liberal, and the fact that someone could disagree with me has always been perfectly clear to me. There’s ALWAYS going to be people who disagree with you no matter what your views are, and the fact that that’s implausible to some people makes no sense to me.
Burke was a conservative, his plan was to move slowly away from monarchy. He wanted change, but thought it should be orderly and led from the top. His plans were mostly thought out in reaction to liberals and proto-socialists; thinking that their change was too radical. Burke wanted to work with the monarchies to transition to constitutional monarchies, fearing a total collapse like was after the French Revolution. He was not in favor of the liberal way America drastically changed government
Now I realized more then ever. It’s all about setting term limits. It’s not about right vs left. It’s about people who don’t do nothing or make matters worse that remain in congress. In any other job, you would get fired but in congress, that’s very hard to make happen. As we have witnessed in recent times. People who say let’s get rid of both need to look at the history of right and left. And from both sides of the equation rather then just reading books done by left-leaning people and books done by right-leaning people. Considering that the right and left, have a different way of coming to the same conclusion and even understanding how they got to that conclusion. When you understand both sides, you get a feel of America and why matters are the way they are. Anyway many individuals in congress are petty children getting back at each other. Get rid of the children and starting electing adults who take effective actions and measures for this country and who are generally interested in coming together bipartisan more often then not.
Once the well is cased, the wellbore is completely sealed off from any contaminations between the crude and water formations. The sole reason we cement at the 2,000 foot mark is that no surface water is lower than that point. By cementing above and below it, there is no way contamination can occur.
A. If you went to a hospital they (by law) would have to treat you, regardless of the ability to pay. B. Whatever happened to neighbors and communities looking out for each other? Weather or not people have insurance isn't the sad part. The sad part is you have to rely on somebody you have never met deciding what you are entitled to.
That's why I am glad I live in Canada. Sure, we have wait times that can be quite long, but if it's an emergency, you just come to the hospital and get fixed up....NO BILL. We do have to pay for things like medication, or ambulance, depending on whether you have added coverage. But everyone can just go and get treated without losing your house. I don't understand why the US thinks this system is so wrong? Our economy, while sluggish, is not in the toilet. And it's not commie. Hope the arm's ok!
Cullen Boardman I understand that he said the health law incited the riot, but when and where did this riot take place? Do you have any video of it? Because I find it difficult to beleive that it actually happened. Left wing anarchists riot, communists riot, occupy wall street protesters riot, but I've never heard of Republicans rioting.
ChannelMath I doubt it. They abuse their power, but I've never heard of them rioting. If you can point to a specific time when they did, I'd like to hear about.
you just have to look at some videos where some protest or whatever gets 'out of hand'. they don't call it 'rioting' when the police do it, but it looks identical to me. e.g. 1968 chicago also, there was the republican 'brooks brothers riot' in 2000'
It takes a really superficial understanding of politics and the workings of the world to think Obama is doing a good job, or that he's a victim of the mess inherited from the Bush Administration. Typically, the people who think this way are those who live their lives as usual and are dependent on reports from mainstream media (or from friends & family who watch mainstream media) to paint a picture of what's going on in politics. These people don't dig below the surface to see what mainstream media isn't reporting on. I don't blame them, though. I personally, hate digging below the surface. I just want to live my life. However, I have learned that, if we don't put the time & effort into digging below the surface (at least occasionally), very bad things will happen as a result, and evil things will be done in our name. Obama is either a corrupt murderous scumbag, or he's doing the will of corrupt murderous scumbags. If you're wonder why I say this, you should start by researching the fact that he renewed the Bush Administration's Patriot Act when he had absolutely no obligation to do so. The Patriot Act would have expired but he personally chose to keep it alive & well. Also look at how much of mainstream media reported on him doing this extraordinary thing (virtually none). After you've researched that subject, continue on that path. Check out how the Obama Administration blocked an investigation of Bush Administration torture, and the many other actions which clearly indicate that this administration is executing the same agenda the Bush Administration was executing.
There is no ban on culture and religion in public places. Compulsory favoritism of one religion over another is the question at hand. If a child were to silently pray in school in a way that didn't disrupt the learning process he or she wouldn't be stopped. On the other hand, if he broke out his prayer mat, and incense sconces and insisted that the rest of the students do the same, there would be problems.
I stand corrected, the total cost of the Iraq and Afghan wars is now around $4 trillion. Reform might cost $1.5 trillion to begin with, but public healthcare is clearly a sustainable option. All of Europe and Canada has had public healthcare options for more than 50 years. Recent crises only stem from massive investment in the US by European countries, causing the entire eurozone to spiral downwards.
I completely disagree with this. Its simple arithmetic. Calculate the average cost per person's healthcare and spread that across the masses. Done. The problem is, this is how its already done because we don't reject people with life threatening emergencies at the ER. Whats worse is that uninsured people can't afford preventative medicine which is much cheaper than ANY service at the ER. My epindectamy cost 20k. If I didn't have insurance, YOU would have paid the bill
These were probably the most insightful three minutes I've had all day. We believe that the opposing side supports ass-backwards and downright selfish policies, and yet we don't stand up for what we believe is right when they have done just that. We really can learn a thing or two from those uneducated mouth-breathers/corporate psychopaths.
You know what the beautiful thing is about scam artists? You can reject the scam. Insurance Companies aren't supposed to be a public service. They are a business and they need to make profit to survive. You pay an extra price so that they will give you the extra money you need when you need it. The risk is mutual, if you don't like the insurance policies of one company then move to another. Healthcare is only a factor of why an economy is strong or not.
I'd argue (as a free-thinker and not republican nor democrat) that those programs work at a state level better than a federal level. Many of the countries that these programs work have smaller populations than some US cities. That HAS to be taken into account! Give the states more rights to vote on what the want. At the same time regulate it somewhat federally. The US IS too big for federal socialism, but not state size socialism. Let the states that want it pay for it themselves.
The federal budget alone is 24% of GDP (up from 4% in 1930 and 11% after the New Deal). You might say receipts are 20% of the private GDP, but those enormous deficits have to be counted somewhere. State and local budgets are another 5-10% of each state's GDP. And none of that includes sectors of the private economy that exist solely to slog through millions of government regulations for compliance, loopholes, etc. It may not be 50% yet, but it's closer to 50 than to 14.
That may be so, but his argument still contradicts itself. He says that people who are more productive should get more care, but if prices stay high, then even those people won't afford healthcare.
"...for without monarchy in England, most certainly we never can enjoy either peace or liberty." - Edmond Burke, "A Letter to a Member of the National Assembly (of France)", May 1791
If a well used for harvesting water is made probably it does not become poisoned because of fracking. In fact many wells that are build incorrectly start becoming poisonous even without fracking near them.
I couldn't imagine if there was no minimum wage.. so many companies would be paying as little as possible. Most industrialized nations(even most third world countries) have a minimum wage. Imagine what this country would be like without OSHA? It would be so dangerous to work everywhere. Anyone who is against minimum wage and OSHA aren't really American.
It's a catch-22 - Big Gov't creates problems in the US that can only be fixed by Bigger Gov't. It's a disincentive for citizens to be self-sufficient, which encourages mooching on welfare, lower productivity, and less voluntary giving. I'm all for gov't being there as safety net for the elderly, handicapped, etc, but not for micromanaging every aspect of existence. If medical costs are too high, they should change the system to reduce those costs, not coerce citizens to buy insurance.
The problem is that you equate wealth with productivity. The most productive people are the ones who do the most work, not the ones who manage it. So to ensure long lifespans of productive people, the workers should get more healthcare than the managers.
i was ready to roll my eyes at the 50/50 stuff till he circled it back to how he navigates as someone with his own opinions. if you put that observation into the context of someone who wants things to be shaken up and to learn from the opposition it comes off as more grounded and less fence sitty.
As I said, it's going wrong because they had many many investments in the US. I also said they've had public healthcare as an option for more than 50 years, and it is not the cause of any recessions happening. And if you want to put it that way, you might as well just say that income taxes are public robbery. People have different opinions, and unfortunately, you alone do not get to decide what the budget goes to.
I drew a line like that when I went to the shop the other day because I'd had a 'lip treatment'. It is very annoying to get your mouth suddenly looking different no matter how old you are. Once or twice I have put a lot of foundation over it. No-one reacts oddly. But maybe they phone the doctor instead.
I was simply suggesting that if you don't like how things are being run, you don't have to live here. If things get too "right wing" for me, Canada is just a plane ride away. People always told me "if you don't like it, leave" but then I realize.. I can! I enjoy the way things are now, with the EPA, OSHA, etc and a minimum wage.
Many of the reasons for the high US med. costs aren't related to it being a private system, like our higher rate of obesity (and thus more chronic conditions), the higher number of people who don't pay (like illegal immigrants, etc), our higher level of medical research & development (which is generally a good thing), and the fact that our culture wants a pill for every little malady.
What you meant to say was "No country has ever taken care of ALL its social needs through charity." Voluntary social & cultural programs accomplish an enormous amount of work in the US and are capable of even more. 64% of Americans donate to non-profits, according to the World Giving Index. The fact that it doesn't cover ALL the nation's programs is only justification for the gov't covering the remainder, not ALL social programs. Defense is not a social program, so that's not relevant here.
Most social benefits do not need to come from the government, they can come from non-profits and others in the private sector, via *voluntary* giving (as opposed to forcibly taking tax money from others).
No you couldn't have afforded it, but you would have been treated in any case. The law requires it, and it would be the only morally justifiable option for medical personnel, and for society in general. Poor people do get treated - my own sister who was a drunk spent weeks at a time in the charity hospital after going on a bender, and was well-treated. Of course, those of us who work and pay taxes pay for it, but it gets done.
It's not a failure, if the original plan was to link 37 computers. That's called a 'Success'. The fact that the government even allowed the privatization which made it into a success is also not a failure - that's 'Insight'. If we are counting failures as opportunities that aren't immediately capitalized on, then every single person, company, gov. entity and organization is a failure in those eyes. I don't think that's a very healthy attitude to have.
workers wouldn't know where to send their stuff or how to sell the stuff without the managers. managers are more important anybody can put something together fewer know what to do with it afterwards. intelligence and problem solving > physical labor
But with the distribution of wealth such as it is, a large portion of the people who pass the no work threshold exceed it significantly. Plus, the effect is still real enough whether they have to work less or not at all. There's a definite sweet spot for productivity in second and third generation money. If only it was easy to find and exploit.
Where in the Constitution does it say that the govt. can't be involved in religon? Separation of church and state was a concept articulated by Thomas Jefferson in a private letter, and the entire premise behind that concept was to prevent a religous ruling class. This quote should help: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Banning anything religous from govt. buildings "prohibits the free exercise thereof".
id say that large families are a very controlable factor. along with other things such as buying things that arent neccesary such as phone tv and internet service. hell even electricity is only required for an extremly small amount of people
Actually, in the 1700 and 1800s 'liberal' referred to people who wanted small government and maximum freedom, and ideology that today is called 'libertarian'. 'conservative' were people who wanted to change slowly from the Old World governments. That was in America. Left and right came from the French, where on the left sat Jacobins who wanted to use force to make people 'equal' and the pro-constitutional monarchist sat on the right. The Jacobins were proto-socialists, not 'liberal'
I like freedom. Can ya tell? Just because I don't agree with someone else doesn't mean I should be able to force them to become like me. If it neither breaks my back or picks my pocket, what do I care? I've always though of this statement not as an expression of carelessness towards mankind, but as a way of treating others. They're not taking money, health or rights from me, therefore they can do as they please. Once you start taking any of those things it's a whole new ball game.
Or you could say it like: The government should be a service to the people. Taking care of its needs for education, daycare, helathcare, pension etc. so you can focus on what gives your own life meaning, and be a productive member of society, and feel more safe. (almost said "a productive worker", but that sounds to much like east europe a few decades ago :) Basicly its a social democratic model, and it has shown its worth in scandinavia. High wealth, health, security. Low crime & corruption.

The youtube anti-sjws are the ones that need to hear that message.
I like this because he and I have the exact same opinions on everything regarding the political atmosphere of today, except our parties are opposite.
Thank you I appreciate you
"There are some liberals who could never imagine someone could disagree with them". With the word some being a euphemism for "99.9% of them".
"Liberal definition- open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values."
Yes, Chinese liberals are capitalists and their conservatives are communists. American conservatives are classic liberals who value individual liberty and equal opportunity. American liberals are fascist-lite authoritarians who want to regulate everything, except immigration for some reason.
It just means you want to change things. It doesn't mean the changes you want are necessarily better.
Nah
I’m a liberal, and the fact that someone could disagree with me has always been perfectly clear to me. There’s ALWAYS going to be people who disagree with you no matter what your views are, and the fact that that’s implausible to some people makes no sense to me.
I was in DC when it was being voted on. There were thousands of protesters. Hell, they even had a concert.
His movies make me feel normal.
What a wonderful, wonderful man
Remember this the next time someone says there's no voter fraud.
John Waters is my hero.
Milo Yiannopoulos is the John Waters of our generation. He even has some of the same mannerisms.
Read newspapers and news of viewpoints you don't subscribe to...
John's the best.
When did the Republicans riot? I missed that.
Cullen Boardman
I understand that he said the health law incited the riot, but when and where did this riot take place? Do you have any video of it? Because I find it difficult to beleive that it actually happened. Left wing anarchists riot, communists riot, occupy wall street protesters riot, but I've never heard of Republicans rioting.
CenturyT
you forgot police. they riot all the time.
ChannelMath
I doubt it. They abuse their power, but I've never heard of them rioting. If you can point to a specific time when they did, I'd like to hear about.
you just have to look at some videos where some protest or whatever gets 'out of hand'. they don't call it 'rioting' when the police do it, but it looks identical to me.
e.g. 1968 chicago
also, there was the republican 'brooks brothers riot' in 2000'
ChannelMath So that's 2 examples dating back half of a century. He specifically mentioned the Health Care law.
If he thinks the health care bill makes it so that "poor people can have health care", he's in space.
No. Read the post I'm responding too. He makes NO mention of policy. None at all.
John Waters 2020 .
Brian Petrasek He really does get it. He is democratic but knows how to communicate with both sides. He’s what this country needs, no joke!
Some things shouldn't be privatized.
Let the states that want it pay for it themselves.
sounds like you need to get socialized medicine so that no matter how few hours your boss gives you, you will still be able to get health care.
Nice, he is a true freedom lover.
See what happens when you play with a permanent sharpie? Three seconds of fun at 12 and a lifetime of a sharpie stash
LOL, so many angry conservos! Keep pushing those buttons, John.
I can respect people who can respect other peoples opinions
That may be so, but his argument still contradicts itself. He says that people who are more productive should get more care, but if prices stay high, then even those people won't afford healthcare.
"...for without monarchy in England, most certainly we never can enjoy either peace or liberty." - Edmond Burke, "A Letter to a Member of the National Assembly (of France)", May 1791
If a well used for harvesting water is made probably it does not become poisoned because of fracking. In fact many wells that are build incorrectly start becoming poisonous even without fracking near them.
Ah. It's really foreign for me to wrap my head around the business aspect. I understand, now. Thank you and cheers
Nobody "earns" anything in this world, it is given to them
i was ready to roll my eyes at the 50/50 stuff till he circled it back to how he navigates as someone with his own opinions. if you put that observation into the context of someone who wants things to be shaken up and to learn from the opposition it comes off as more grounded and less fence sitty.
Right. None of that actually counters my point. Think I'm done here.
It really sucks not being republican or democrat in the USA.
Smart man.
I think this is an odd title for the video!
Good stuff keep thinking.
I love you John Waters.
your right, it goes both ways
I also put the "I believe" in there for that exact reason: I was simply suggesting it.
(almost said "a productive worker", but that sounds to much like east europe a few decades ago :)
Basicly its a social democratic model, and it has shown its worth in scandinavia. High wealth, health, security. Low crime & corruption.
