I started keeping a basic survival information book in each bag i have, and they are slowly evolving. Itd be cool to see a pdf file release of your's for those interested in your recipes, diagrams, and such

I use a three ring binder 9.5" X 6" for mine. As others have said, I can move pages around and re-organize, or type things or put pictures into places, and take out old pages without destroying the binding. I love the journal ideas that I've read here, and that you showed. Thank you!

Exactly what I did during a year-long survival/indigenous/bushcraft class 30 years ago. I carried a small spiral bound notepad and pocket camera in the field and transferred to a handwritten journal after classes.
Only one weekend s month over a year, but it filled a notepad almost every time and the journal is full of tips and tricks on fire building; bow, arrow, spear and atlatl making; spring traps; flint napping; natural cord materials and manufacture; hide tanning; and so much more.
I swear by 3x5s. My wallet has a holder for them, and I use the Rite in Rain shown here (or maybe a little different, mine is pretty old, but close enough) when off the black top. I stash a few neon orange ones in there (very small signal panels), address book and insurance numbers on one, a couple reference cars like a mini BSA knot card so even when I have a brain fart I can use the right knot, and a few pieces of paper cut to 9x5 and folded for longer notes. Learn how to use your camera and your word processing tool and its amazing how much you can put on there. Or a very sharp pencil, and then cover it with packing tape so it won't smudge.
The other thing worth putting in is a piece of glow in the dark sticker- leave the backing on. Charge it for a minute with your flashlight and use it as a place mat to put your glasses on when mobile, or as a signal. Make hunting for my eyes in the dark much easier.
Also, for an in-pack carrier, if you can find a pocket protector, that will hold about 20-25 of them. The one in my EDC bag has one of those GitD stickers stuck on it, actually.
For 10+ years I've had a notebook called "how not to get lost" , so far,
all pages are blank!😂👍🇺🇸✝️

Thanks Dan for your great advice. I just assembled my outdoor database last week and I’m starting to fill it with my information. Love your idea with the notecards, they fit really nice in that right side pouch, along with a Victorinox Swisscard. This is going to be so helpful going forward with my adventures.

Great idea👍🏻this has been 1 of those projects I’ve been putting off, as I have a tonne of old notebooks that I’ve scribbled stuff in, but it also has useful info in it too. For anyone starting out, save yourself the time of this chore & start this way haha. I’ll be building my own bible & discarding that pile of notepads (at some point! 😆) Much love 💕

I agree on making your own notes database. I think the field notes are GREAT idea to hand write. But for everything else. I am very tempted to type it out on a computer and then PRINT it on the Rite-in-rain paper with a laser printer. This helps in making small print which is legible. I am currently testing pens and ink and pencils with rite in rain paper and stone paper which is what brought me to this video. We will see.
Great idea. I do already keep a book of knots in my backpack. It's light and on waterproof paper. Bought it at Bass Pro. It stays in the large mesh pocket where I have my emergency kit amd first aid kit.
Being infantry in the USMC and taking rite in the rain out in the field as part of my kit I can tell you with experience that your going to want to cover your protractor with a cloth. I just cut a sleeve off a skivvy shirt and that has worked well. Even though you have the note pad cover dirt/ sand finds its way in there and scuffs off the details over time. Love your videos brother keep up the good work

I also suggest to have lead pencils, they work even in very cold weather and their components can have various uses in "survival mode".

If you get a binder rather than a notebook you can keep all your notes in one place. Once you have something final you can start a new page, pull out all the irrelevant pages, and have a nice organized notebook. Rite in Rain actually makes a5 binder paper.
I have three of those with ideal spots and learned crafts and privileged info.

I started keeping a log book a while ago, mostly because my GPS coordinates I save can get lost when I switch receivers. Glad to see you do this topic!
One of my C's, I have 11, not 10, is Communication. Paper and pencil can be a very valuable tool in the woods.
I've been using a Sokkia field book (for surveyors) since 2001. Now they have a Write in the Rain Sokkia book.
They're hard cover, sewn, and indestructible. My regular $6 20yr old version doesnt mind water.
Amazon also has a hardcover Right in the Rain for sale, appears identical to the Sokkia.
They're the perfect size too...
I feel like this simple detail would have saved Chris McCandless’ life. Just the mindset of accumulating data would have set him motion of exploring his surroundings more thoroughly or better notes on preserving food in the bush. I plan on keeping a journal even if it’s just to write down all those questions I have so I can later find an answer versus just forgetting.

Field skills are among the most perishable skills - not all of them, but many. Then there is the plethora of Bushcraft skills that are rarely used - a really skilled bushcrafter is bound, over time, to forget more tidbits than most outdoor folks ever learn.
I want one of those 3×5 card holders. Even though they are kinda heavy, even the cheap ones hold up ok and they are a good practical size.
I've heard that how the data is organized is sometimes more important than the data. How do you differentiate within the book things like fire making, shelters,etc? Chapters? Spacing?

I wish I had seen this video before watching all the others I’ve seen. Gonna have to be going back and taking notes. A very good idea to have the info all in one place aside from my head. Don’t get out enough for it all to stick and be recalled when I need it. I just remember parts and then wing it 😂

I have a ton of rite in the rain. I used to print their plastic covers.
If it´s just for personal notes, a Buddy Book is quite neat. They´re quick to make from a sheet of A4 (although other formats should work, too), have a good size to just carry in a back pocket or shirt pocket, and the way they´re folded they have enogh stability that you can write on them without putting them against your leg or something. You can either use them in their normal eight page configuration, or you turn them inside out when you are done with one side, and expand your notebook to sixteen pages.
We called them smart books for different procedures notes etc…. Same concept I learned with my first couple “poop” books. Wasted a lot pages and ripped half of them out. I like your system and thinking.

Yes...... This video is full of facts. I've done the same thing for years and set-up all my backpacks in different ways depending on what it's use is intended to be so I tend to have 3-4 different backpacks of different sizes that are packed with everything to go trout fishing on small streams, grab and jump in the boat for steelhead and others for all the things ya do in the PNW all your life. I have gotten so much shit for my planning and field notes over the years from friends, until they need to know something about a certain spot and when it's more likely to be a hot trip....
People forget that the original scientists who collected all the information we know today were the explorers, those who enjoyed going out and actually experiencing life first hand for themselves but also chose to continually record information or "data" and shared it through publishing articles, essays, memoirs, and journals. The tech is there to bring field notes to a whole new level if more people chose to record and share data independently to improve what's already out there in physical print over the last 200 years.
Rite in the Rain makes excellent gear, worth every penny. I work in very harsh environments. Rite in the Rain products hold up. I'm not picky about what I write with, but I'm picky about the pens and pencils I carry. Cheap junky plastic gel pens don't cut it when you are in the field. What works in the office probably won't work in the field. Nothing is more frustrating than working hard on a project and taking notes just to find at the end of your day all that hard work you took notes on is melted together on cheap paper and the ink is smeared and unlegible. That's when you wish you spent a little more money for good gear.

The reason I love a binder style journal such as the Rite in the Rain one is that you can scribble notes out of order and then *reorganize* them into appropriate categories (with tabs) later :D
P.S. I think Fisher Space Pens are cheaper than the Rite in the Rain pens >_>

Best thing I ever heard was, when you learn, your brain is like filling a bucket with water. It will only fill till its full, after that, its going to spill some out. It pays to save what you will lose, because like water, knowledge is necessary to living.

Hello, where did you the canvas cover for your field notebook?
I also reserve 1-2 pages at the front for a table of contents. I write down major topic areas (perhaps things like "food", "knots", "shelter", "first aid", whatever...). I then number every page in the notebook/journal. Whenever something new gets added, I just write it onto the next available page, and note the page number after the topic listed at the front. If a new topic arises I didn't anticipate, I simply add it to my table of contents page. I got some of these ideas from bullet journaling and use them at work in my notebooks as an engineer (usually sorted by project, to-do lists, lab data, patent ideas, whatever).
A cross between contents and index? I like it.
@@Aardquark777 Essentially. Best solution I have devised so far for being able to find things in journals later on (often times years later), when the pages are bound. Ring bound notes could be treated differently, as the contents could be rearranged.
But with the bullet journaling method I use, if notes on one page are relevant to more than one topic in my contents, i write that page on each related topic.
Something like the following;
Knots - 1-3, 5, 9, 11, 13-16, 24
Shelter - 4, 6-8, 12, 14, 24
Food - 10, 17
Plant Recognition - 17-19
Navigation - 20-23
This is brilliant! With the added bonus of having all your notes in chronological order if that may help referencing.

ever thought of a personal sized 6 ring binder inset for your 'bible'? that way you would never have to tear out pages, you could just swap them as you need them. :)

I have note pads and a final note book that I write things down in. I Had a serious motorcycle accident, Lost my short term memory from a severe head injury. I couldn't read or talk properly and had multitude of injuries and found that I had to write everything down. It helps, If I remember where I left my books, LOL.

I've only got 3 each on both legs, heals, calfs, behind knees, length of forearm, separated hand from wrist, broke ring finger in two spots, fractured hand, 2 - 2" long pins in hand, 2x finger & 1 connecting hand back to wrist, snapped forearm in two places. 1 plate and 6 screws. nerves ripped from spine and neck. Knee cap down at ankle. I've got more but i think that is enough for tonight. Cheers!
