I'm just searching for info cuz I wanna make a no budget movie (Animated AND musical 😞 ) but I also only have my phone and chromebook to work with (it's a school chromebook so I cant download anything) unless I use my brother's computer. For now this is the only video youtube has given me that actually helped in a way. Thanks bro and your music video is awesome 🙏
Tysm I’ve been watching a lot of vids recently as I’m trynna start a band and figured I should make a bunch of demos and music videos just for the experience. Very helpful video
This is a wonderful video that got me to a great starting point. I used this video to help make my first motion graphic to go along with my friend's song!
Thank you for this video! I had this dumb idea for a fan-music video I really want to do, and even decided on an artstyle that even animated, should hopefully be doable. I had no idea where to start though, so the storyboarding software is incredibly useful to me, as I've been just listening the music on loop and keeping scenes in my head rather than doodling it down.
This is really helpful! I really want to do a fan-music video but I know I have a bad habit of trying to animate everything on full 24-frames all the time throughout the whole thing and I knew trying to do that AND planning AND Storyboarding (which is my weakest skill) AND then adding effects afterwards would probably kill me. So this helps me figure out how to scale down somewhat
That has always been a problem for me as well. Setting limitations really is a skill. Set them, finish, and if there's time you add some extra... if there's no time, at least you have a finished project.
This is awesome, thanks so much for sharing your progress. I've just been using Flipaclip without adding any extra stuff on top, and haven't heard about some of this software like Harmony, so this is super helpful!!
Very good Pat! Good information. I showed all my students your channel this past semester. I chuckled when when I heard your "open ended" pun for the flag emblem. Yes, I caught that:-) You and your brother did a great job on Bowie's song!
Thanks Steven. Maybe it doesn't demonstrate everything (or anything) we learned at animation mentor, but who has the budget to spend weeks on two seconds of animation?
when you split the panels to the lengths you wanted based on the beat/lyrics, did you use a shortcut? i figure the most efficient way would be to play the audio and cut as it plays, however i cant figure out if theres a shortcut. doing it manually is wasting a lot of time for me.
If you're using Final cut, you can use the short cut to add markers (M). In Toon Boom storyboard I do it manually just by keeping an eye on the waveform. There are short cuts in storyboard, but mine are all customized so I'm not sure what the defaults are.
Sorry if you kinda answered this in the video and I just wasn't paying attention enough. In order for me to work on the thing do I need to work on one scene at a time, or one shot at a time? Like on the program, do I nees to have it be like scene 1. Or does it need be shot 1 scene 1? That's the main thing I'm confused about before it gets to editing. Since for one of my smaller projects I have one scene but two shots on the same singular project file. First shot is the head of the dragon moving up and down and then it changes to a full body shot of the dragon opening its wings all
How you organize your scenes is whatever makes the most sense to you. If you're using harmony, and using the same drawings/elements in one project file, it can be exported to multiple scene using different cameras. For example you could have a close shot of your dragon's head that's exported to scene 1 and then a full body exported to scene 2, both coming from the same animation file. Hopefully that makes sense. It's a good way to reuse the same animation.
Thanks for the video Pat. Been researching best way to hire an animator for a music video and most of the stories I’ve come across turn out to be people feeling like they didn’t get what they paid for. Wondering if your services are for hire and if you have a pricing sheet you can share with me. Thanks!
Hi C. Yes, I'm for hire but I don't have a pricing sheet. All the work I do is custom, so each job is priced differently. I can send you some more details if you want over email: pat@springshoeanimation.com
Hey Funkmaster! I just doubled the final resolution which was HD to give some wiggle room for zooms and pans. So typically something like 4000 x 2100 or 2100 x 4000 depending on if it was panning vertically or horizontally. Thanks for watching,
You can email me any details you have: pat@springshoeanimation.com . The work I do is all custom, so it's usually beyond most indy musicians budget (unfortunately).
Nice job, the music video turned out very cool. I'd love to make a similar animated video for a song I'm just starting to record in my small home studio, but I have little to no ability to draw the initial sketches. Do you know of a free animation app/software (I also have a $0 budget) which I could use to create something similar or with animated characters that requires minimal artistic ability? (and obviously, has the ability to add music to the graphics). Thanks.
Hi. I'm not much of a resource for the free apps out there, though I'm sure they exist. Perhaps there are some photo filters out there that would work well for you if you want to avoid drawing? Sorry I can't be more help.
If you can't draw, perhaps you can manipulate photos or use video to get your ideas across. Or you can hire an illustrator if you have the budget for it... and then "animate" the illustrations. Just make sure they work in layers.
Thanks for the tutorial, is very informative. I would like to know more about animation for those who have no drawing skills 😅. Im trying to make a animation video for my music but i don't have drawing skills either time to practice enough, but i like the way you made this animation, so i would like to know more about the best tecnics to make whit minimum drawing, including background. Thanks
Thanks for the comment. I have another video about animating without drawing you might want to check out. ua-cam.com/video/Cu5nUselDaE/v-deo.html. I'd say the key is just experiment and see what works because there are a million different ways to tell a story. Software helps, but it really comes down to the ideas you develop.
Interesting video! Question: do you know any animation / explainer software which allows to create musicians as characters? I have tune which I want to illustrate and have next to 0 drawing skills, need characters to move and including various shots (wide medium closeups), also maybe change of scenes. Yes and love DB as well ;)

There's always the option to hire an illustrator to create the artwork for you, but I guess that would require a budget. You could also use photography or collage materials together. It would be a very different look from this but may be interesting.

@@doradoeagle Animation is a whole world and can be a lifetime pursuit. I'd say start really simple. Indeed. I worked hard to keep the "animation" minimal to see how much could be done with just still drawings. It's basically an enhanced film strip.
