This is the re-recorded version of "Pale Shelter" by Tears for Fears which was released in March 1983 on their first album The Hurting.
Live from the show "Going to California".
Roland Orzabal and Curt Smithth met as teenagers in their home city of Bath, Somerset, in southwest England. The band's name "Tears for fears" was inspired by Primal Therapy, developed by the American psychologist Arthur Janov, which gained tremendous publicity after John Lennon became Janov's patient in 1970.
Tears for Fears were signed to Phonogram Records, UK in 1981 by A&R manager Dave Bates. Their first single as Tears for Fears, "Suffer the Children" (produced by David Lord), was released on that label in November 1981, followed by the first edition of "Pale Shelter" (produced by Mike Howlett) in March 1982, though neither of these releases were successful.
A most underrated bassist. Very hard to play a complicated rhythm and be the solo singer. Love this band since I was 23 and The Hurting....saw them in September and was still just like 1985 when I saw them the first time! I felt like I was 25 all over again!
Gosh yes...The quality of Curt's playing and singing is very under rated. His talent and skill are epic from day one. And he did it without singing through 5 banks of auto tuning for his voice...something that pop singers now can't live without. For me as a band they have everything. Quality song writing, excellent musicianship and epic voices. I can't listen to radio any more...to much empty talentless rubbish.
Absolutely right! Curt plays some very complex bass lines & riffs while singing in perfect pitch. Not many can do this...and as well!

In fact, I'd genuinely make the case for it being the best live band they've ever had out on the road.
Their current drummer Jamie Wollam really drives the show forward.

@@misterhimura036 Many people talk about his singing, but not that much about his bass playing. He was a great bass player and a great singer. Hell, even TFF as a band are underrated.
The litmus test for me with nearly any band is how well they can perform a song live when removed from the perfection of the studio. I think Tears for Fears not only nailed this song, but added to it in this performance.
A litmus test for assessing the skill of a band can include how well their studio work translates to live playing. I think Tears For Fears and especially Curt simply nail this song.

Remember watching this for the first time when it was released and marvelled at how JC's playing on the drums made this song sound much more, the hi-hat groove and the commanding sound snare drum - superb. Something about open handed drum players, they make grooves sound more 'fuller' imo.
Such a beautiful playing! I listen to it every couple of days, never get boring of it. I especially like “double licks” on snare, like army march.

The description says that this is from the "Live in California" show but I noticed that the whole band is wearing the exact same outfits that they wore in the 1990 Knebworth concert. I'm wondering if this clip is an outtake from that video & the audio is from a later show?
Looks like Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. It could be a possibility that they wore the same clothes at both shows.
+KoolCat ! At Knebwoth they played only three songs. This concert was at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. I guess they just liked the outfits back in the day hahah.
