Well, you may find exceptions in certain books , but if we talk about the grammar rule , we find that every adjective ending with -er is considered as a short adjective. Therefore, the accurate spelling is to add -er in comparative and -est in superlative.

Wether you count the number of letters (5 letters or less= short adjective/ 6 letter or more = long adjective)
Or
You count syllables (1 or 2 syllables = short adj/ more syllables = long adj)
