Absolutely fantastic tutorial 🤗😍🥰👍 I struggle with drawing whimsical faces, I’ve even purchased bunches of drawing books but this is the best tutorial EVER❣️ I just ordered a set of architect stencils with a bunch of shapes. This was BRILLIANT idea to create symmetrical eyes. My faces were absolutely scary. Hopefully with these tips and techniques that you so graciously shared and lots more practice on my part I’ll finally be able to draw a “cute” whimsical character for my art journals.
Omg yr a friggin genius.....makes it so much easier I have found my magical tools (drafting templates) Talk about thinking outside the box Yo go girl 👍🏻👏👏woot woot🎺🎺
That's SO one of your girls! 😃😃 Thank you for the tips! Must ask the kids if they still have some old school supplies! I'm REALLY rubbish at drawing!! Even simple doodling. Drawing symmetrically....disaster. Like the hairline left and right. This has shown me I can maybe even make a template for that 😃 Encouraging. It does fascinate me how some people CAN draw and write beautifully and some just CAN'T. On the other hand it's SO good to know I can make beautiful things with mixed media and cut out someone else's handwriting. 😁😁 I WILL try this. Thanks Amber. Stay safe and yes, getting down and getting creative is a great uplifter of weary spirits 👍👍 Love to ALL of you at this difficult time of life. Isobel
I love that you brought drafting and blueprint tools into your art without it interrupting the process at all; it actually seems to free you to make another attempt (going by your wording in the video about "still needing practice")... but truly, your "pretty mixed media girls" are definitely *at least* on par with all the mainstream artists currently making a living from doing just such art (yet almost exclusively claiming it just takes practice and not tools). However, there is one difference: you present an obvious advantage to me over the mainstream, as you make the idea seem far more accessible to other folks (such as myself) by not only sharing your "secret," but also showing how well it works. And how it doesn't limit you, but allows creation. For a girl who adores art and artistic endeavors, I still have the hardest time shutting down my "right mind." Thank you. After watching "Advice from a dog," I will never miss another of your uploads.
I love that you use templates! Drawing faces is such a challenge for me, but once I saw your method I realized I can do that too! Thanks for sharing. :-)
Thx so much for this 🙏 i am just like you and cannot draw like i imagine in my head and this i can do, even have the circle and oval grids. Totally going to keep practicing now!
I've noticed you using the templates before and I wondered about it! I saw one at Michaels the other day and almost picked it up ... I'm going back for it now! THanks so much for taking us through your process! I'm def going to be trying it ;) Awesome! xo
I just broke the Subscribe button because I hit it so hard! LOL. I love doing mixed media stuff it helps with depression/ anxiety =) I also make a template at times when I just don't feel my best I guess you could say.
Really love this video. Please, please could you release some digi prints of your lovely faces. I’d love to use these in my journals whilst practising for myself.
I love this video I always go back to it over and over again. I wanted to ask you what did you use to create the face shape template? I love your videos so much! Thank you for sharing your process!
I used my silhouette to cut the face shape. I think it was an upside down egg. If you don't have a cutting machine, you could print your shape and cut it out with scissors. =)
Hi lovely tutorial. Thank you. I can draw realistic faces but not whimsical! It's all about practise and learning from mistakes. Just an idea tho you may have figured it by now ...carry on the first large curve of the hair past the head an inch or so. Then curve out in a small arc each side of that to give a parting and help shape the hair. Thanks again for the tutorial it's one of the simplest I have seen.
Just found your channel. Thanks so much for this video. I have been trying to draw faces and it's always horrible. This is the easiest tutorial I seen thus far. Thank you so much for this.
The way I do it is much easier. I draw the face shape and basic outline of eyes, nose and mouth on a piece of paper with a black Sharpie and use that on the back of the paper to then draw the face with a more fluid shape. Using a light board really helps to see the shapes through the different papers. No erasing pencil lines or using stencils as I go.
You use an eraser in this video Amber. Can you tell me where it was purchased from please. Have found this video so helpful, thank you for sharing your secrets rather than holding them close to your chest .... what an example!!! 🤩Your a star.
I would really like to know the measurement of the oval circle you have made for her head? I cannot draw worth anything and crafting and creating is my only way to deal with my anxiety and depression. Your help with this whimsical girl face will help me immensely!! I would really appreciate your help!! Thanks!! I love it!!!
Ps the book I used to learn how to draw realistic faces is by Lee Hammond called Draw Real People; and a more technical type book by a forensic artist called Drawing Realistic Faces by Carrie Stuart Parks. With all the technical knowledge you already have it would be a cinch for you. It seems to me that you can draw! Can't wait to watch Part 2 and have a go at my own girls. Not so easy to do whimsical yet I keep altering it to look realistic then the proportions are out but you made it look so easy. Thanks for your encouragement. M
Hi!! I am currently commissioned to work for a notebook cover. I wonder if i can copy this style of yours on drawing this whimsical girl?? I love the technique of using oval template for the eyes. Thanks!!
I'm glad you liked it! I cut the shape out with my silhouette, but you could also just trace something from around the house, or print your shape and cut it out. =)
for the face, do you just print off an oval since it's so big and you cant use the template? I like the idea of using templates every now and again for a "perfect" piece..its so smart. I am trying to practice the "freehand" as well. Both methods for our arsenal is a good thing... I ADORE YOUR VIDEOS .. and did I mention I love how you show yours supplies list too? LOVE! A hearty thank you from pacific northwest, Lakewood WA!
I have been struggling in drawing. I real love this tutorial it’s awsome. I am as well as the other follower struggling with the drawing the face. I clicked into the link and was unable to find it. Is it possible for you to email it to me??

Where do you get the template for the face shape? I don't even know how to look it up. Haha.
I just cut out an egg shape. =)
I checked your links, but I don't see what kind of eraser pen you are using. Is it Papermate something?
Yes, Tuff Stuff eraser =)
Do you have a template we can use for the face shape?
Did you make the face templet yourself? I would need that too.
Yes, I just cut it out. =)
