Father...this is just wonderful...I was meditating this morning on what “ sort of person” Mary was. Her personality ...other than an emotional woman who loved the Lord, I had no idea! This provides such wonderful insight and brings us back to the 1st century allowing us to be with Mary, Martha and Lazarus! I had no idea they were siblings! Three Hail Marys for you!
I've just been reading "Prophetess of Eucharistic Love" by Fr. Sean Davidson. The book explores these same details about St. Mary Magdalene. Excellent book!
I read some place that The Blessed Mother and St. John also went to Provence. Cannot remember where I read or heard this. Some of my ancestors are from Provence. May be my source.
The town of St. Maximin la Sainte Baume is only a little over an hour from Cannes (69 miles). In the Cathedral, there is the reliquary of St. Mary Magdalen, containing her skull. The cave is up in the mountains about 45 minutes from the town. Then it is about a 45 minute hike up the mountain to the cave, where there is a Dominican priory. Very peaceful and holy place.
@@saintstephenpdx Christian here, (not pictured) amazing! Cant wait to go back! Last time I was in the area was during my 4th or 5th Bday at St Tropez!
Also, if you visit Cannes, take a short boat ride across to the small walkable island of Lerins. There is a restaurant at the dock, but more importantly, there is a beautiful monastery with a great monastic giftshop and the ruins of a mediaeval fortress along the southern shore - which you can explore and the view from the fortress is very contemplative out across the sea.
PATRICE HADSELL-EVANS the book is called The Golden Legend by Jacobus Voragine. It is currently in print and you can also probably find older editions for sale online.
I’ve read several books on the life of St Mary Magdalene by Bishop William George Mcclosky, Edith Filliette, David Mycoff. The later a reprint by Etienne-Michel Failllon in 1848. He was a Catholic historian who was born in Tarascon France. He was ordained a priest in 1824. Father is right about current authors revising history.
According to the visions of Maria Valtorta, after the BVM was assumed into Heaven. The Apostles have now fled and James has been martyred. The thorn in the side of the Pharisees is Lazarus and his sisters who are chained, placed on a ship and set adrift and they are shipwrecked in France. Lazarus spreads the faith and is made a Bishop probably before Peter leaves for Rome and Mary Magdalene becomes a hermitess and lives in a cave where she is brought food. Maximum is mentioned by Valtorta.
Hey! I would like to belive this story but how could Maria from Magdala speak to the people in Marsaille? I don`t think they spoke the same language...?
Greek was the universal language at the time of the apostles used for commerce, academics and the Bible. Jews of the diaspora spoke Greek. The people of Marseilles, being a major shipping port, would surely have been able to communicate in Greek. That's my guess.
"First published in 1470" 1275 is a fake date for The Golden Legend: The Golden Legend or Lives of the Saints. Compiled by Jacobus de Voragine, Archbishop of Genoa ... First Edition Published 1470 I'm not convinced of 1470 either.
What you are reading is a made up story about Mary Magdalene not facts. Lazarus, fleeing Jerusalem sailed to Cyprus and became the Bishop of Larnaca. He was buried in the Church that still bears his name. Pls check it out. His bones are still there on display. Mary Magdalen is a different woman from the two sisters Martha and Mary both sisters of Lazarus. It is possible that Mary Magdalen landed in a boat close to Marsaille. But if St. Lazarus was buried in Cyprus it is very possible that he kept both his sisters with him.
There are different stories that have been handed down. But St. Lazarus is buried in the Cathedral of Marseilles, France. He is venerated there and the Roman Martyrology cites his death in Marseilles on December 17th. St. Martha is venerated in Tarascon, France. St. Mary Magdalene is venerated in St. Maximin la Sainte Baume, France and her cave is a popular pilgrimage destination. Scholars have cast doubt on this story (and just about everything of faith). But this is the tradition handed down and preserved by the Dominican Jacobus Voragine in his work entitled "The Golden Legend" written in the high middle ages.
So much of this is false. Mary Magdalene was the wife of Yeshua and the Apostle to the Apostles with her own gospel. She was never a sex worker, that was another woman. There are so many false stories about her.
How come Mary Magdalene was allowed to black mail the pagans, sounds so unfair to use God against for her own purposes? If that would happen today, people today would call her unchristian... but as a saint she can't be unchristian.
She appeared in a vision to them. I would guess that St. Mary Magdalene did not will that, but that it was willed by GOD and that He used her to bring about the conversion of the governor and his wife.

Father, can you put a link to where we can find this particular book on the Saints?
