The greatest lesson I ever got about language was that in writing - be it fiction, poetry or lyrics - every word matters and is there for a reason. This break down Springsteen offers is superb precisely because he only scratches the surface here. He breezes past much of the real depth by assuming the audience gets it or by thinking perhaps that they wont. Either way, the use of figurative language to convey whole concepts, ideas or events in a few fragments of rhyme is the true genius and why those who embrace the arts are truly lucky and in Springsteen's case truly grateful.

The thing that makes Springsteen such a perfect songwriter is that most people can't get perspective on their best songs for 20 or 30 years. He had this perspective and could take his own songs into account at 23. Granted, his ability to tell the story so perfectly probably required 30 years on the road.

This is interesting to hear and I would like to see a Manfred Man perspective of how they took what was, in my opinion, not a very good song, and covered it into something that was light years beyond what is started out to be. Bruce sold them short to claim the douche line being the reason it went to #1. Also, it should be pointed out Bruce didn't go out of his way enunciate in this one.
Technically Mandred Mann's Earthband DIDN'T change the lyric, it was just part of the recording process that made it come out the way it did. I do think that's one of the rare times when the cover version is better than the original (sorry Bruce).

Well, no point in turning in a carbon copy in most cases. So, I'm glad for MMEB's version and Hendrix jacking up the juice on "... Watchtower", etc.
