  • A trip out was had today by some of the Leigh Spinners Mill Engine Group to the Kelham Island Museum Sheffield to see the River Don Engine. It only runs for a couple of min and twice a day but well worth it when the engine runs at speed the whole building shakes. Footage by myself and tom.

    I’m 52, been standing at that rail for decades & every revolution inspires awe.

    It's the speed with which it reverses that's so impressive!

      Aye absolutely at full speed it can reverse in 3 revolutions quite something for a engine that size

      @@HeritageVideosbyJSouthward it is extraordinary the speed at which that massive engine reverses. First time I have seen that. I can't think of any other motor or engine that can reverse so fast given the forces evolved.

    The speed range, acceleration/deceleration and fast reversal make this engine highly suitable for the steel plate rolling mill application. Also, the 12,000 HP rating is entirely appropriate for rolling heavy plates, Bravo, the engineers at Davy.

    Eine tolle Maschine. Wieso wird diese laufend umgesteuert?👆👆👆😃😃😃 Viele Grüsse aus Germany

      hat damals wohl ein walzwerk für stahlplatten angetrieben, die werkstücke mussten also immer hin- und her durch die walzen gezogen werden, deswegen kann sie so schnell unsteuern. wie das fundament das mitmacht würd ich auch gern wissen😅

    Is this like the engine a Kempton?

    • @HeritageVideosbyJSouthward
      @HeritageVideosbyJSouthward  2 роки тому +3

      It's simular yeah the major difference is the Kempton Park engines have pump rods attached to pump, but the river don engine drove directly via gears from the crank shaft back in front of the engine to a huge steel rolling mill

      looks like this one has 3 equal cylinders so single expansion? probably because it has to reverse quickly?

      It is indeed a single expansion engine with a Joy Vale gear for rapid reversing at Charles Cammell Cyclops Steelworks in Sheffield from1905 to 1957 It was powered on 12 coal Lancashire boilers at the River Don works the steam came from 1 of 2 power stations 10 gas heated boilers. sat outside was 3 Ruth accumulators 1 vertical 2 horizontal, 400psi of steam pressure reduction value took It down 160psi working steam pressure . At the museum It's run on 100psi
