  • Randy Newberg is traveling for a couple weeks and assigns Michael Parente and Marcus Hockett to catch some grayling in his absence.
They head to an alpine lake in Montana, hike in, and waste no time catching fish. They decide to keep a handful to bring back to Bozeman and try cooking up.

There's a few lakes in CO that had grayling which I'm interested in catching. Maybe just use butter, not oil? Can't see how you could go wrong with butter, salt and pepper in a cast iron skillet..?? Definitely would like more fishing videos.

When you cook a fish like that. Soak it in milk for 30 mins to a hour, also clean really well. Since they are small, they will have a stronger flavor in there meat. I love using a Cajun fish fry fry batter and some red lobster seasoning. When I fry fish.

If you bleed the fish...ie - cut the gills and let them bleed out, that "fishy" taste is reduced. You don't just bleed Walleye, you should bleed all fish.

Glad to see you guys didn't get fired! Foil wrap steams-out the blood (at least that's what I was taught) like over a fire and breading holds everything in. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see what's next.

I live in Michigan, and 1 of our northern cities was named after the Grayling. Michigan DNR IS in the process of re-introducing 1 of our native trout species ( Grayling ), which has been non-existent for over 100 years. I've fished Montana for gargling and find it a very fascinating fish. Thanks for the video Randy, Michael & Marcus

Fished the Gallatin just outside of Big Sky years ago and caught a few grayling. Stopped at Gallatin River Guides and was told that the Montana DNR was reintroducing the graying to several Montana rivers. An unexpected treat. I got a nice pic and slipped the little guy back in the water. Size #16 elk hair caddis did the trick.

Randy's sense of humor always cracks me up, just like the intro to the ice fishing and the first turkey hunting video. Who wouldn't want to work for someone who wants you to go turkey hunting, bear hunting, trout and grayling fishing. I am sure the new guy will fit right in whenever he is announced. I have enjoyed the Fins & Feather Spring Film Tour (no Fur in the title, but hunting even bear hinting is tough and I always appreciate you guys being transparent about that) of 2019. I hope to see more fly fishing videos, Montana has some of the most renowned fly fishing waters for trout and other fish in the whole world let alone the United States of America. I didn't know that Marcus and Michael knew how to fly cast and fish, that is awesome and ridiculously cool.
When Randy gets back, perhaps he will have to give Marcus a lesson on how to proper fillet a fish the ole Minnesotan way, even if it isn't a walleye. I watched that video back in the archives too. I didn't know that Montana had grayling in its waters, that makes the state even more appealing now if one can imagine that. I thought they were only in Alaska, British Columbia, etc... but Montana is on the border so it makes some sense with restocking efforts. I have heard that they taste good. Thanks for sharing guys. Good luck in your next on your own adventure.

The blood is normally what will make a fish taste "fishy." If I had to guess its because when you were filleting the grayling the pieces were small enough to where the blood could soak the meat whereas when you cook it whole the blood stays in the bloodline.

Smoke them next time. Peel the meet off...use to make a trout dip. Phenomenal.
If you do a foil pack like that put a little lemon slice in with salt and pepper.

Great video guys! The hunting off season vids are fun to watch and y'all make them entertaining. There's a bunch of good tips for the cooking in the comments. Two things to add. First bonking cleaning and cooking the lake/stream side will have a remarkable improvement in flavor. I don't get into grayling in my part of CO but we chow a lot of fish tacos with bowls an browns. Second try some Tony C's for a cajun style seasoning. Thanks and keep up the good work.

I love fly fishing. It’s the best challenge.
I suggest you go and google Gordon Ramsey on how to fillet a fish or deer meat for dinner. The first fish is fishy probably because it was a fattier fish. For one you need a very sharp knife. If you think it’s sharp it’s not. Lol. Good video.

Grayling flesh degrades fast. The best way to cook it is to have your pan hot before you catch one. They are pretty good if you eat them on the riverbank but taking them home whole was a mistake.

My all time favorite lake in MT! Grew up fishing the lakes in that area, and there are several in that area that are amazing! If you hike up the canyon about 7 miles from trailhead at end of road you’ll be catching cutthroats that get upwards of 20”!

For fishy flavor. I'd suggest cleaning earlier and taking as much of the scales off as possible. When you open them up anything that has a blood or black look scrape it out. That's where that flavor is leaching in.

Their meat is a little more firm/grainy than trout, good eating fish. Slap a little butter in the belly cavity, wrap in foil and cook for five minutes on either side on the grill. Split the back, finish splitting from the vent to the tail and lift the skeleton off the meat, flip it over and lift the skeleton off the meat. A little fresh lemon juice, and good to go. That's how I did 'em in Alaska years ago.

  • @tronxt5388

Montana has native grayling, most pronounced on the Big Hole River south of Butte. Additional populations are found on the Ruby River; lesser numbers on the Madison.
Unfortunately those are in the central region which is catch and release only for Grayling.
Can you say what lake this was? Or general area? No I’m not with FWP 😁 I’d just like to know where I can catch some to eat.
