I think you're right about Celestia not wanting even her guards to risk their lives. I bet the guards are more like a form of propaganda so ponies would have more faith in their government, and outsiders would be more afraid to attack.

It’s the guards jobs to protect the princesses from villains they *can* stop. There are probably a lot more villains then the show presents, but the guard takes care of all of them.
As far as the guard walking past Twilight, Pinkie and Spike without seeming to notice, a guard later recognizes her on the spot, so giving how well known she should be by the guard to be Princess Celestia's personal student and protege what reason do we to believe he didn't recognize her on the spot and think nothing of it?
Kinda makes you wonder what other mischief the little scamp got into when she was younger that her showing up in sneak suit doesn't even raise an eyebrow.
Oh yes... Twilight's all nervous they might see her. When one does... he opens the door for her! Apparently Twilight and her friends are totally allowed. The suit may disguise Pinkie and Twilight, but Spike being there totally shows one pony is Twilight. And... her brother is the captain.
Well, they didn't exactly face supernatural threats in such rapid succession before. One thousand years of next to no significant attacks can leave the future generations rather rusty when it comes to dealing with current problems.
In my headcanon the guards do different things across Equestria like fighting some monster in the badlands and the night guard has this black ops squad that deal with assassination and protection from the shadows. Remember both just headcanon/things I wish could be but aren't because of the tv rating.
ooh, that's cool. Now I want a spin off show about a black ops team of a pegasus, a unicorn, an earth pony, a crystal pony, and a changeling. Maybe some others.
This is just a stupid thing I thought of but: All of the guards fit into the color category. Being we don't see any Green or Purple ponys. Why is that? Are they just born like that? Is there a special species JUST for royal guards? Or is there some sort of Pony Fur Dye?

Bravelove Meow Actually that makes complete sense, I mean, Shining Armor looks different, and he's shown to be of the highest rank, maybe the high rank officers are allowed to keep colors. It also matches seeing how it's shown that the plumes are made to match the manes of whoever's wearing them, making it easier if they just made guards dye their fur/mane.
Plus you know, Mayor Mayor already showed that mane dying is a thing in Equestria.

is only a costume, not a real race, in all the show, the bat pony is never say by twilight or other pony or creature but only by fans alter the nightmare night evens! sorry to break you dream of it!

I like to think that the majority of the Guard (Both Royal and Night) is protecting the borders of Equestria. Also the group that is protecting the Princesses does have trouble protecting the princesses due to the reasons you've stated. I mean all four of the Royals would prefer to charge into a situation then let the guards handle it. I mean it's hard to guard the unwilling, especially when they're alicorns who can probably teleport away from you with little to no trouble. Though that situation at the Wedding makes me think that Chrysalis didn't go in alone and that the majority of the guard that we saw was changelings who slowly infiltrated the ranks of the guard.
I don't know, maybe I'm over thinking this whole thing, either way. I'd be proud to have you as a brother at arms, CC! We can both protect Best Princess.
In the show the guards mean nothing. But this is why we have fan fiction to fix these problems!

Maybe the guards aren't meant for BIG threats. I mean they can clearly function as security guards, preventing theives and vandals or anypony suspicious into the palace, or where ever they're guarding. They can still be useful for smaller threats that don't require the attention of the Mane six.
Cool vid CC, but there is one thing I would like to point out, in the episode testing, testing 1 2 3, when we find out how the EUP was started. Twilight said the ponies banned together to help the princess, not that Celestia herself formed them. Atleast this how I remember hearing it. If this is the case perhaps Celestia was just humoring the ponies, when in reality she knew they couldn't do squat to actually help her and does things herself.
I have to agree, the EUP has been utterly usless. I just don't know if that is there own fault or Celestia's.

They might be more-or-less just crowd control, so Celestia and Luna aren't mobbed wherever they go.
I believe that the guard has become more of a figure head then an actual fighting seeing there was no real threat for 1000 years. That break could have weakened there ability to fight. What I mean is that the guard is only practicing against each other and nothing like an outsider army. An example of this could be the wonderbolts in which they probably lost there need for fighting. All they do is preform tricks.

It's worth noting down; The only Guard Pony in the entire series who is officially a character witha a name it's Pony Flash Sentry. I KNOW, I KNOW, he has no character development and stuff, but if Hasbro would ever want to explain the basics and routines in life of a Guardpony they COULD use him a bit in that topic. Then it would also give him some character development for a change, they can't keep him as much as colorless as his Human Counterpart.

Well there was one time when they wee useful. That time was when they went to look for cileastia and luna when they got taken over by the vines.
cannedcream You got me thinking about Celestia. You said in your video that she does not dare to let any of her subjects to get hurt, but why would she let Twilight Sparkle to save her instead? Not that I dislike Twilight or anything, but to come to think of it, other than nurturing and teaching her about many things about friendship and stuff, Celestia may be using Twilight or even trying to weaken or dispose her. So far in the 4 seasons I've watched, Celestia have not help Twilight whatsoever other than telling her what she has done and learned and giving her gifts and transforming her into a princess. Another thing that came into my mind is that Celestia needs Twilight to take her place in the throne somehow. I don't know about others but this are my thoughts.

I'm also pretty sure that the EUP is just there to glorify the princesses power, so there is no uprising? I don't know, the ponies seem pretty happy with their government, so really. THEY DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. NADDA, ZULCH.

We gave seen the Magic, Speed, Flying, and Strength the Royal Guard first hand, but not in Battle. And when the Guard were attacked by Nightmare Moon, she shot LIGHTNING! they were shot out of the sky! I think if a threat were to come, they would Something...I said "Something" not "Something Useful".

maybe that's how shining armor advanced in ranks do quickly, he was actually competent and ignored Celestia's attempts at protecting him and achieved some "great" act of heroism
Cc, I had this thought about the guards: what if they where just like the Wonderbolts. When Night Mare Moon was banished, Celestia called upon stallions to help protect Equestria from danger from the skies or the ground, and over time began to be used for shows, but still used to protect everypony in the places they are in
I have the idea that the royal guard we see in the show are just the new recruits and that all of the well trained ones are out fighting a war in some distant land we haven't heard of yet.
u need to remember though, this show was intended for five year olds so the show is heavily censored, i mean Christ they wouldn't even let Celestia have the title Queen for crying out loud, so I doubt they would have the guards actually do there job, cut there would be a lot of blood and deaths by and from them. Also, the shows premise is that friendship will save the day so that's why Twilight does all the work. So the guards aren't useless, the just can't have full on war and Street violence going on in the show. I guarantee if the creators did what they wanted, this show would probably be on adult swim due to the sheer violence it would hold. I remember in one of the mlp comics, one Gard was able take down three people on her own, but got badly injured form it so there not going to have it on a show ment for small children. I bet if they knew that adults were going to watch it, the show would be much MUCH different

You could always join the Defence Alliance, assuming you know the right pony. The D.A. is funded by Herd Verdant and has the magical resources and research of the Third Conclave of Flowing Shadows at its disposal. They field the Azure Wing's elite flyers, the Bolts From the Blue, better-known as the Skybolts. And it was reorganized to support Gearhead (of Herd Verdant) to make his Alicorn Array defensive rig available to whatever city or town needed it. Like Canterlot and Crystal City (the first city to have it installed).

night? Princess Luna is not just a night horse she is the most beautiful princess I've ever seen!! I wish they showed her more in My Little Pony friendship is Magic right.
They probably did see them in 'It's About Time' but since it was their captains sister, her dragon, and one of her friends/one of the elements, they might of thought that they weren't much of a threat.
I mean later on in the same episode, the three do get found by one of the guards, but then he opens the door for them saying something like 'Great to see you'

I really like how the guards are represented in the fic, "Paper Tigers" it was only for a small moment, and I nearly missed it, but it tug at my heart strings. Please listen to it on Obab Scribbler's channel to see what I mean.
They may be used for smaller tasks that no one knows about because it may be everyday things like fires and finding lost foals
I think pure intimidation factor so the ponies don't turn on them selves and start fighting

It only took me until now to think of this while re-watching the video, but I think the reason the guard ignored them was because he knew who they were and didn't see any threat because he knew they would never do anypony harm, or since the fact that Celestia knows basically everything considering she's been watching Twilight with godly 4th wall breaking powers she knew Twilight was coming and tipped off the night guards. There's also the fact that Celestia purposefully doesn't allow them to intervene so Twilight can take actions and make choices independently so she can learn lessons, either by making mistakes or saving the day, Celestia is just acting like a parent would to a maturing teenager. But that's just a theory, a pony theory, thanks for watching.
I think that the guards serve a big porpoise and protect the princesses a lot but we just haven’t seen it and that when there is a big big threat they don’t have strong enough magic.
I've heard the royal guard are there to make Celestia's kingdom seem protected to put off anypony thinking of invading Equestria. When a kingdom is ruled by four princesses (who are practically goddesses), I think Celestia's employment of the royal guards was only for intimidation factors.
I've always seen the Guard as more of intended to get the average ponies, the citizens, out of the way while the Princesses take care of business.

Personally, I think that nearly every instance of the royal guard being overwhelmed by the threats presented in the show was basically then facing a threat they were ill-equipped to handle. Basically the equivalent of the JSDF fighting Godzilla with conventional weapons when everyone knows that the only way to even hope to fight Godzilla on equal ground is with either a fancy superweapon or a giant robot. I doubt Equestria has the technology to build giant robots and the only superweapon they have is magically bound to a handful of civilian mares (with the exception of Rainbow Dash, now that she's a Wonderbolt).

it would depend on the leaders strength if said leader is a skilled and experienced fighter, or just exceptionally powerful, than it can actually show Garget strength as well as care for their citizens, but its a double edged sword, as it also shows that they may think that thaws who wish so much to protect them are believed too incompetent to do so.

I think the problem stems from the fact that, as far as we know, before the return of Nightmare Moon, nothing ever seemed to go wrong in Equestria. One thousand years of peace is great for the commoners, but let's face it, if you have had a millenium without needing an army, your training standards would seriously plummet. I think the biggest problem is the guard is pretty much untested. They haven't gotten the small battles that keep an army fresh for when larger conflicts arise. In equestria, there's almost nothing to fight, so none of the guards can actually do anything because they're inexperienced.

i think the only royal guard we ever see trying to do something effective is shining armor in canterlot wedding with his protection spell
