My family has both. My dad has hunted with the .257 for over 45 years. My brother hunts with the 6.5-300. I hunt with either my 7STW or my .340 WBY. I have seen what all these cartridges will do to game. between these 2, if I had them both sitting in the safe and I was headed out to hunt, I am grabbing the 6.5-300 every time and that is my vote. There is more of a difference than what you see on paper when you see results on game. The next gun Wby needs to build is the 7mm-300 in a fast twist so it has an advantage over the 7STW and will easily beat the 28 Nosler. If they want to beat the 7mm RUM then it would have to be the 7mm-378.

I had the chance to try a 257 Weatherby not long ago and I was really impressed. The kick is really mind and it shoots crazy flat. Don't own any rifle chambered for a Weatherby carthrige but trying the 257 Wby made me think about buying one! Nice vid.

Your cost comment was right on. Reloading is a win for the 257 not just factory ammo. If I figured right and I did, were talking, it takes over 38 percent more powder to get the 6.5 moving at those speeds. So that being said you can load at least a third more rounds with that 1 or 8 pound can of stuff that goes boom. I load a lot of both and it's a very noticeable difference. I guess I also don't know what a big game cartridge is, I've killed white tail, muley's pronghorns sheep, hogs, black bear, and three elk. As I said before I don't venture often into brown bear territory so on those Western hunts somebody was always close with with a 7 Rem ultra mag. Although in a bad situation the shot makes the kill, and had a bad situation appeared I'm sure I could have at least had the bad brown thinking about his decision.

257 Weatherby. I also hope Weatherby can improve the twist rate to 1 in 7.5 or 8, so we can take advantage of the heavier 257 bullets (130-140 grains) slowly coming into the market.

If they change the twist rate of the 257 weatherby.so it could accommandate 130 and 140 grain bullets.I hope they step to the full length 300 case necked down to 257 only with the bigger bullet and call it something else so shooters won't get it confused with the half case original cartridge.

So shooter would have their choice of shooting bigger bullet or smaller obviously it would have more recoil and some might want that and some might not but they would have a better choice than just the regular weatherby in 257 and like a super 257 and still not put the regular weatherby out of business which ever one sold would still be a 257 weatherby.but the shooter would pick.

Back in the 70s Speer came out with a 120gr sbt , bc.480 . My 257wby loaded with a full case of Retumbo & fed 215 primer averaged 3405 fps over 9 shots @ 800ft elevation & 80 deg F . A real flat shooter for deer and antelope . Run the numbers and give it a try . I think you will like it ! Cheers

I have a 257 Alaskan Weatherby mag that has been bedded and free floated. Action and trigger has been tuned.
One of the flattest and most accurate rifles I've ever owned. It will shoot a 1/4" group's at a hundred. Two inches above zero at 100 yards will put any animal down with with proper shot placement out to 450 + yards. Let's just say it's a confidence builder. Speed kills said Roy Weatherby, this wasn't his favorite caliber for nothing. I'm also fortunate enough to own a 300 customized Weatherby mag also, my 2nd favorite rifle. That conversation is for another day and topic.
The 6.5-300 is a barn burner. I've seen the ballistics, incredibly awesome.
Weatherby's will always have a place in my safe, on a hunt and in my heart.

I vote 257. It’s available occasionally and you can get it in a cheaper used vanguard. Cost is very high to get into 6.5-300. The 6.5 300 for me just isn’t a big enough bullet 7 or 270 would have been a better bullet or just stick with 300. I just don’t have the medium game at that distance to get the most out of 6.5-300. The 257 though at sub 300 yards hunting distance for me performs plenty well enough. Although the 6.5-300 is an amazing cartridge it just has too many drawbacks. I don’t even think it’s listed in Nosler 9.

I would go for the Would go for the 6.5 weatherby necked down to 257 weatherby.7-1/2 twist to 8 to stabilize bullet from 117 grain up to 135 grain bullets or larger.I believe the smaller diameter have less friction coming out of the shell case and it would have less recoil.I think I would use the beltless case Adam weatherby come out with Ackley improved.

I have a 257 bee, and the last two years I have used a 6.5/300 bee and for what I’ve noticed it really wasn’t spectacular for how much it costs to shoot this thing, I’m a weatherby guy and have been for close to 20 years since I got my first 300 weatherby. But the gain of 600 fps over the 257 is due to a lot of powder burning, the case sizes are totally different as shown. The 6.5/300 is a performer but at a cost and real world gain isn’t there cuz animals won’t know the difference. Running with mono bullets out of either gun with the high velocity a buck or bull won’t know it was shot with 6.5 or a 257 bullet. The flatness is near identical.

I’d argue it’s going to be sufficient for any North American hunter. People have taken elk(at appropriate ranges with good shooters) with 243 for years. The 257 blows that out of the water. And honestly the only thing that would be suspect is a charging bear and that’s really a toss up if anything will do the job. Moose while yes are large seem relatively easy for shooters to take down with good shots.

257 Weatherby is good for elk out to 300-400 yards. People take moose 200 yards away. This is one of the most versatile guns on the market especially if you reload. Anything from 80g Prarie Dog hunting to 115-120g Moose hunting. Can't go wrong. Whenever I go for my Elk hunt soon, I'm not hesitant to bring the 257. It's all personal opinion. 257 for the win.

Well, you're dead wrong as usual. Being a real-life hunter is one thing. Being an outlaw and a hunter and a guide and having what's called common sense goes a long way too. Big bullets do not kill faster than little bullets. ""Coughs"" trust me on this. I spent quite a few years with my "Mentor" a Cree Indian. I saw him shoot a moose with a bow. Any bow will kill animals. Including Bison and buffalo. Big critters. 80-foot pounds of energy is not exactly a lot. the minimum for rabbits and ground hogs is #300-foot pounds according to gun experts. I wonder how Fred Bear killed every animal in In America with a non-compound bow??? He must have been tricking them"" HuH""...!!! I wonder how the early American Indians killed so many critters??? Someone should tell the Inuit eskimo's that, since they are killing polar bears and Caribou and 4-5000 lb Walruses that the 30-30's they are using are not powerful enough...!!! I've heard every gun expert and gun nut explain how bigger always means better. And it's one of the biggest lies ever told. A 223 will kill anything that walks in N. America. It'll kill bears, it'll kill moose, it'll kill you too. Unless the U.S. Army is wrong. I've had people tell me a 308 is not enough for the big bears or polar bears. And I'm like ""Say What""...!!! People have gone Magnum Crazy. People are trying to hunt animals at 1000 yards. Insane. People have lost their minds. They really have. If it's beyond 300 yards I will not take the shot. I was taught ethics. Even as an outlaw. I never broke that rule. You can go out and spend thousands on the newest hottest rifle. I'll keep my 30-30 and my 223 and wish you luck. Rich people are always the worst shots and the biggest crybabies. But they can pay to play. Same goes for all the people promoting 1000-yard hunting and target shooting. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should...!!! And contrary to all these so-called-experts bigger and faster is not needed. The 6.5-300 and a decent scope and ammo and you could of had #3 cows in the freezers. But common sense seems to have gone on vacation...!!! Peace.

@@ReloadingWeatherby It's an easy read...!!! Just go slow. If I need a 300 Weatherby or a Magnum rifle to kill a deer. Why even have all the lower powered ones?? Why not just sell magnums for hunting deer. Explain to me in a way a 3rd grader can understand why?? I need a rifle with 32 pounds of recoil to hunt a hundred-pound deer??? Or a 300-pound black bear?? Why do I need a High-powered rifle to hunt what can be killed with a recurve bow with 80 pounds of killing power. , lol. You keep saying to have the power I need to hunt with. You mean you can't kill a polar bear with a 30-30?? We need to tell all them Eskimo's quick like...!!! A 30-30 has more killing power than a 308 or a 30-06 at 100 yards or less. Believe it or not. And more animals have been killed with it than all of Weatherby's calibers combined. It's nice you have your own channel and love Weatherby rifles. But I don't need to spend Two thousand dollars on a rifle and a hundred dollars a box for ammo to kill a 100-pound deer. I'll keep my 7-pound recoiling 30-30 thurdy-thurdy...!!! And if I decide to kill a moose or polar bear. I'll run into Wal-Mart and grab a $ 20.00 dollar box of ammo. And I'll buy 3 cows and throw them into the freezer with all the money I saved, "Not" buying a Weatherby...!!! Peace.
