I really like this interpretation. Just finished the novel, and the whole time believed it to be about dreams (chasing sheep), ambition, and ego. Specifically, the narrator losing touch with his dreams, and becoming ambivalent towards life. I think the two interpretations fit together nicely!
What an amazing insight. I think you hit it right on the mark. There’s so much in this novel that reflects your idea from the narrator and his relationships, the locations, and even the minors things like the relationship between the owner of the Dolphin Hotel and his father. Great video!
"And even if such a today soon ceases to be today, no one can deny that it is in fact a today. For if a today ceased to be today, history could not exist as history."
I like your perspective. I've noticed all the elements you have mentioned. I'm just now to the part where the narrator has a line on the Rat's location. I've found the novel interesting and an easy read but this perspective really ties some of the more disparate elements together like a "Dude's rug" tied the room together in Lebowski. I'm so impressed that Murakami came up with this conception at such a young age. I'm 62 and I've lived that dislocation and it is jarring to see that truth used as a ribbon to tie up this sad but playful and often funny novel. Murakami is a real pleasure to read. Thanks.
A couple questions for your next video: Why are there always butter flecks in the Vegemite jar? and Oi m8, if we're going on a maccas run d'ya think we could stop to pick up some durries from the servo and then some grog from the bottle-o so we can get fecken maggot or nuh m8?
