Spinning a Wool Batt - Your Frankenbatt Questions Answered
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 лип 2024
- Happy Holidays! There were a lot, lot of questions on last Friday's video where I created and spun up a Frankenbatt - a batt made of cannabalized odds and ends from my stash. I wanted to take a little while and record a Q&A. If we continue to get enough questions weekly, I hope to make this a pretty regular segment.
I will see you all on the weekend for another video, Merriest of Christmases, and Happiest of whatever holidays you may be celebrating! Love you guys!

Yes! Let's get Dizzy! I have every thing but the polymer clay. Ooo and Glitter! And it makes sense, cause it would be pretty and you could make some for friends! Let's do it!!!!
You've convinced me! Keep an eye out this week or next!
Hi, Trish! I found you sort of recently and have enjoyed your videos. I especially love how brave you are when you dive right into projects. I also appreciate that you show whole projects...when you dye fiber there is often a knitted swatch at the end, for example. It was great to watch you spin here as you answered questions. I'd love to have a spin in with you in more normal times!
Welcome! What's the worst that could happen if I dive in? You all get a chance to see a big goof 😂😂. I can't wait for the day when we can just do spin ins again!
No matter what video of you I watch I always learn something. I love how down to earth you are!
I like the Q & A while you sit and spin format a bunch. We had some Solstice fun here too. Yay to the sunlight returning. 🌞
Hopefully we'll be doing it again soon!
Really needed this pick me up today. Im watching from the other side of the world. It's 7AM and it's the best start for my day. Be you. Don't change. Keep creating. Happy Holidays 😊
Aw, thank you so much! I'm sorry you needed a pick me up, but glad I was there to give it!
That little sand dollar looking thing is so cool.
I have been a spinner since 2008 and I'm not a technical person myself. I do what the fiber tells me to. You are doing a great job and the Q&A section. HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone!
Thanks, Anne! I do hope to make it more regular! Plus, we can spin or weave together while I answer questions. That's a lot of fun for me!
I am up for spinning while watching your video. That's good idea Trish! Small intermittent spinning time adds up. Who's with me!
I think you read my mind because I was hoping you would show the yarn you were spinning. It’s looking beautiful. 😍
I just love spinning that Rambouillet! Thank you! I couldn't not show it at the end, that would just be mean!
I really like this idea of answering questions in a seperate video.
Thank, Teresa! Seems like you are not alone!
Thanks again for all you do for us. ANd yes, your face is very expressive and it makes me smile and sometime laugh.
I have gotten so much more out of all of you than I have given. I appreciate you all SO MUCH. I even laugh at my own face when I'm editing sometimes. What in the world??
Hi Trish! Awesome explanations and I love the non-technical, do-whatever way you approach things! Your way makes life fun and simple and exciting because you don’t always know how things will turn out, so it’s like a Cracker Jack surprise! I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas filled with love, happiness and laughter! ❤️🎄 hugs and kisses to Luther too! See ya soon!
Thanks! I'm well aware that a lot of people are NOT comfortable with not knowing the outcome, but I have to be myself! Merry Christmas to you and yours too. We had a wonderful day. Luther is napping - He's tired when his niece and nephew dogs come over! 😂
Thanks for all the awesome info! I think a periodic q&a would be fun!
Thank you for doing this Q&A! Very beneficial. At least once a month would be awesome!
I hope to make it regular, so it will just depend on how many questions I get! It will always be a bonus for the week!
I love watching Q&A videos and I love watching you spin.
I really hope to make it a regular thing! Then I get to just relax and spin or weave with you all!
Thanks for uploading!
Love!
Love the Q&A! Hope you had a great Christmas!
Its pretty amazing how the yarn can be so different than how the fiber looks before spinning! I can see how one can become obsessed with the art.
It feels like magic every time. I'm pretty sure that's what makes me love it so much.
That was super interesting, thanks for answering questions!
How fun is that!! Excellent!
I think the Q&A every week or two is a great idea.
This was fun. You make all the faces you want - you have a cute face! Merry Christmas to you and your family, Trish.
I can't control it! My grandpa was a rubber face, so I guess it came from him. He would be SO HAPPY 😂😂
Thank you for answering so many questions.
Lol hopefully I can spin and talk at the same time someday. Right now, I can only focus on the spinning haha. Thanks for answering those questions! Very informative.
You will! There will be a day where your body just knows what to do.
This video was a great idea
Your videos are so informative 😊
Loved the Q & A. I had wondered about some of the things you explained. Thanks for the podcasts. Love your co-star, Luther!
Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully we will do it again together soon! He is SOOOO tired from Christmas fun today! 😂
Hi Trish, Thanks for this video it was very informative. Love your spinning videos! Keep them coming.
Merry Christmas. I like you explaining different types of tools it helps a lot
Thank you for this trish merry Christmas and a yarny new year xx
Same to you! And you are so welcome!
Thanks for the info and merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! I hope you had a great one!
Merry Christmas, Trish!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!! Thank you for another fun and informative video😀
Happy holidays!
Another great video
So glad you enjoyed it!
You are amazing and helpful with everything you do! Thank you for taking the time to answer questions.
Not everything! 😂 But I am so glad if it did help you!
Merry Christmas to you and yours. 🎄☃️
Merry Christmas to you too. I hope you had a great one!
Just found your channel and wanted to say I love it! And these tips are great, thanks!
Welcome, and thank you!
I raise icelandic sheep and they have very long locks. Im always seeing their wool in the bird nests around the farm.
We even see dog hair in the nests around us, so I just don't worry about it. Wool is great for so many things, and there is a reason birds pick up hair and wool anywhere they can find it.
Thank you answering all these questions. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Where I live in NZ it is the summer solstace and can not wait. Love your vlogs and find your humour up lifting. Bless you and thank you for helping me spin
Thanks so much for the Q& A!!! I found it very helpful! Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones!
It was fun! Hopefully we will make it a regular thing!
Great info. Batts look like such a fun project in themselves. Merry Christmas!
They really are so much fun for me. I hope to add some to my shop in 2021! Merry Christmas!
Good questions and answers! Thanks for doing that. And I love watching you spin. 💕 Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁
I hope to have enough questions on future videos to do it again! Merry Christmas. I hope yours was great!
What a fun way to answers questions! Thanks for sharing your frankenbatt it’s super cool.
Hopefully we can make it a regular thing!
You have a great way of explaining things!!! It's so easy to understand!! Thsnk you for sharing your experience and knowledge!!
You are so welcome!
This was a great session...particularly loved that you were spinning during it. I agree, this format would be wonderful to see repeated monthly or so.
It's coming again soon, hopefully where the spinning is more visible. Will I ever get good at camera angles? Probably not 😂😂
I didn't know I had some of these questions until you answered them, thanks! Also, that colorway is beautiful!
Happy to help!
Thank you so much for all this information! It is very helpful and I'm always keen to learn more about blending fibers. Doing a Q&A video every once in a while would be awesome.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for explaining Your Helping me understand about spinning. I’m such a newbie.
You are so welcome!
This answered a lot for me!! I’d love to see the diz video! Maybe you could make a few and add them to your shop?
It’s Christmas Eve but it really doesn’t feel like it. It’ll be a quiet day for us here. Maybe I’ll do some knitting.
It was definitely a strange Christmas! I hope you still had some kind of fun. The diz video will be here pretty shortly!
Wow, 7oz! My clemes Elite gives me 2oz batts. Love watching you chat about fiber
These batts are really giant. They can actually be a challenge to handle sometimes.
Thanks so much for all of your help with carding. If I ever get a carder I will use what you've taught all of us. I'm hoping maybe next birthday or Christmas to get one.
I got a 22 rifle from my hubby. I told him does that mean I can get you a spinning wheel for yours? Lol!!
Oh my goodness! I will totally cross my fingers that you get one for your birthday, or maybe that a nice used one you can't pass up crosses your path. It has happened to me!
I would like to see more Q&A videos every week. How many ounces would the largest drum carder you have hold and if you spun 2 ply, how much yardage would you end up with. I know you probably haven't spun like that before but I would love to see a whole video on it from start to finish
All I need is enough questions to answer, and I can do them every week. Do you mean if I try to pack the carder as much as possible and spin it the thinnest possible? I guess I need to know more what you are asking!
@@FiberLoveDiary yes pack the carder as full as you can and 2 ply as if it were a dk weight when finished
Thanks for the Q&A, I was wondering why the fibers were getting stuck on the licker in. My kids call me the mad scientist when I break out my dyes so I totally understand and appreciate the naming of the Frankenbatt! Merry Christmas 🎄
I think that way about dyeing too! I love it though. Merry Christmas!
Love all your videos. I have a Strauch finest double wide electric carder, which I love. I was hoping that it would card very fine fibers without neps, but alas it does not. It did blend some BFL and Alpaca beautifully.
I have found there is only so much I can do to really do find fibers without nepps, and some fibers do better than others. Maybe sometime I'll make a video of the tricks I've tried that help.
@@FiberLoveDiary that would be amazing!
I’m very interested in a tutorial for making a diz so yes please. I was also wondering what dyes you use. Currently the only dye I use is food coloring. I’m trying to figure out what brands of dye are the best and safest to use. Thank you so much for making this video. 😊
I love your puppy, he is so cute.
He's my best buddy!
Ooh, I have polymer clay and will make myself a beautiful diz! Thanks for the idea.
I'm glad it was helpful. I have so much craft stuff, I have been trying to cross craft and use up materials more, so it made sense to me.
@@FiberLoveDiary I know a lot about having tons of craft supplies! I started as a quilter, then I sewed cloth diapers for my babies, then I learned how to knit do I could knit wool shorties and pants to go over the cloth diapers. Eventually I started making cards. Now I have 2 looms, a spinning wheel, and a drum carder... I have so much stuff! But it does come in handy. Oh yeah, I have metal stamping supplies and some basic jewelry making stuff. My gosh.
Merry Christmas!! When you have the time, what’s your favorite wool to spin with/best beginning spinner wool/wool blends
Merry Christmas! GREAT ONE! I will add it to the list of the next Q&A video! Thank, Kate!
Could you do a Q&A on heddles and using the one
that insert different sizes?
Next time I do a video with my rigid heddle loom, I'll invite questions so I can a Q&A. I think that's a great idea!
That was a great way to answer our questions, thank you. What were you spinning on? A wheel?
I'm saving up questions for the next one! Yes, I was spinning on my Matchless.
I would love to see how you made that diz. It is gorgeous. (Gerry)
Look out for it very soon! I figured it can't hurt, but it will be a bonus video!
You explain so clearly. I am enjoying watching you spin. Are you making a fractal yarn? (Gerry)
Yes, it will be sort of a disorganized fractal, because I didn't try to split it perfectly even into the segments if that makes sense!
I use a slotted spoon as a diz
I'd love a video on how you made your diz
Keep an eye out this week or next for a bonus video on that!
The next tool I need to buy is a drum carder. Would you recommend a hand crank model or an electric one? What are the pros and cons between the two types?
I would say electric if your budget allows, but a hand crank carder does an equally good job. It just takes longer. If it's electric, you can get whatever is going in next ready while the last bit cards.
I know this has everything to do with my personal sanity, but I watched a video that was titled "Why Merino is Better" or something like that, the answer the guy gave was that and I am Paraphrasing "Merino is better because it is the ONLY type of wool that is not itchy and causes a lot of irritation." And I am still mad about this because I have actually had such a bad time with Merino and great times with it and other fiber and I found this not true. It is actually the way that the yarn is spun and treated! I left a comment and the guy is not a hand spinner and had looked this all up online. This guy just threw out my correction to his video and said that I was wrong. Which needless to say it makes me mad because myself and I feel like other hand spinners would have the same reaction as I did to this video, it was somewhat true but it was so off track that it was infuriating! I will find the video and leave the link and please tell me how you felt about it!
Commercially processed merino is not a fave of mine, although I do use it sometimes. It's just so much easier to find a lot of the time. It sounds like maybe he was selling merino, or something made of merino.
@@FiberLoveDiary On the video he was not selling anything in his entry statement he said that he was trying to get the word out about this new info he had found.
@@kayliconklin2475 LOL I would be very suspicious of that.
