Best bet for trout is to fish the side of the reef the current is hitting mate, 15-30m of water, don't be afraid to drift to find where the fish are, use whole baits of pilly or yakka on gangs with the smallest sinker you can use with the current, I normally get away with a 4 or 5 ball sinker in that depth 🤙
Yeah good call mate! also pig try some different rigs like a patanosta rig and bigger baits to get the interest of the big guys
15-30m for trout. 30-60 for nannies and sometimes big trout. Deeper for yummy stuff.
If the tide is running out it hits the front of the reef first, reef acts like a filter so the dirty stuff will be coming from the tide and on the other side of the reef it will be filtered or clean.
Sometimes the fish are also just not on. Try slabbing up a small fish like a stripey or yellow tail for bait too.

I am a commercial skipper and mad keen angler!
I have always gone by “no run, no fun”. Fish where the current is pushing against. Pelagics on the edge, demersals on the flat.
I like going deeper, especially for big reds. I also find that the majority of trout are bigger as well. 50 metres plus.
Crimson and saddle sit like “Christmas trees” on your sounder! Sometimes reds, goldies and jobbies school on the flat shalely bottom between reefs. Watch the sounder when your steaming from spot to spot.

Don’t worry too much mate. I fished today a touch north of cairns.
It was a terrible day for us too.
Got Mack tuna on the Spanish rigs and a giant cuda on the jigs that wrapped all the lines.
Even the GT’s weren’t keen enough to get a hook in.
The tides changed today and barely any current. Note these conditions down as the less favourable.
It was a glass out so these days are best used for finding new ground rather than concentrating on fishing. It’s hard to do but will pay off in the end.

Haappy birthday skid. Check out Sammy Hitzke fishing channel. He was in Townsville a month ago from Brisbane. He uses jig lures alot out reef and perform better than bait. He great at explaining technique and what tackle he uses. I use to jump off the Lucinda jetties as a kid in the 90s. Great for catching mackerel at this time of year and so was dungeness🤙

Try unweighted in the shallow stuff. It gives the trout a chance to come up and grab it before the little stuff gets to it

Happy b'day mate, I'm not sure how to fish QLD reefs but down here we use alot of lures like the metal jigs and soft plastics also we don't anchor we drift and when we drift using bait we use a paternoster rig sinker on bottom and 2 sets of hooks. Also when on the electric or anchor I use the smallest ball sinker too hook and a big bait like a fillet of slimy or something similar

Make friends with a pro trout fisherman who works the reef as it is not just a mater of throughing a bait in the water . Look for the flow on on a flood tide in a south east wind hang off the bomie .Big reefs fish on big tides small tides small reefs and shoals .Use as little sinker as you can AND MOST OF ALL LOOK FOR THE BAIT SCHOOLS keep your eyes open and spend time at the reef there is no short cuts to filling the box you gota do your time .Hope this helps you get started MV Joy-C

Here's a tip. It's simple. If your catching small fish then your not deep enough! Small fish don't survive where big fish can pick them off!

Not sure if it helps but a old decky from Swains told me years ago, use big baits and as soon as you feel a little bump wind in. He was catching the biggest trout by far.

Slept overnight in the back of my ute under a tarp, froze my nuts off forgot the sleeping bag, went for the morning session caught fuck all. $70 in juice, then food, ice bait piss etc etc for 2 fucking squid. Absolutely filthy, no one else caught anything either

HB mate🍻try using fresh bait not frozen. Try knocking the fillets off something and use that for bait. And Berley up with chook pellets and tuna oil. Should help improve your chances a bit.

If you want to catch Trouties find that bomb in 15-20m with bait on top and fish the pressure point. Pillies with that running rig you love will work. Just fish lighter with the lead if less current will help.
Sounder course might help, but as long as you can identify a big rock holding bait you are in for a chance!
