While any restraint is better than none, boosters are best for young children. Designed to protect the average adult male, seat belts do not properly fit young children. In this video, a young girl explains that boosters used correctly lift a child up so the lap belt crosses over the thighs and the shoulder belt crosses the middle of the shoulder and chest. In a crash, they reduce a child's risk of injury 45 percent as compared to seat belts alone. Specifically, they reduce risk of serious internal abdominal and head/neck/spine injuries cause by a poorly fitting seat belt.
