I have exactly the same hair type and length, went to the barber 2 weeks ago and let them shorten the back and cut the back in layers to remove weight. i didnt let them touch the front at all. the haircut turned out okayish but i wish i could get my hair cut by you. you done a great job on him. I feel like you could have shortened the hair in the back a bit more so that everything can grow out together. this way it looks a bit like a mullet

Yes scissors and clippers cut the hair differently. This young man probably has a good bit of split ends as well. You can't expect to go from a buzz cut to long hair, and to look the way you envision. Hair growth patterns aren't even. You gotta remember when growing your hair long, it goes through that awkward stage that drives everyone crazy. They usually end up cutting it off. Get a good shape cut, and DON'T worry about it.
