Eirik W There's no original character when it comes to Catwoman. The inspiration came from the Miller years, along with the graphic novel "Her Sister's Keeper." The Penguin never had a back story. Batman has gone through a million incarnations. There's no official version. Nearly every scene from "Returns" comes from the comic books. Check out Batman Online. My big problem with the Catwoman origin is that it made no sense even for a movie that doesn't go for realism (which is fine). What the hell happened to her? She fell to her death, was licked by a bunch of cats and came back to life with superpowers. Huh? It's just baffling.

+FestArc Burton's Batman is the golden age Batman. Schumacher's was the Eisenhower Batman and TV Batman, Nolan's was 70's-modern Batman. Snyder's (unfortunate) Batman is 80's Batman.
@ Burton's movies took inspiration from Batman's first publishing year. Batman Forever was the golden age just after Robin's introduction when the tone lightened considerably.
Yeah, I wouldn't bother with this review, because it is wildly known that Kevin has a personal beef with Tim Burton, and some of that will no doubt rub off onto this review. I find Kevin entertaining, and funny at times but I don't trust his judgement on films. Plus I love Batman Returns, and no one would dare make me feel otherwise about it.
It's more of a Tim Burton film than a Batman movie, far more than the first Batman. Danny Elfman is let off his leash, and the movie obsesses with villains in sewers and some bad pseudo-feminism coming out of Pfeiffer's mouth. I like the movie, but the flaws make it an ugly baby.
Peter Gorman I think it is more expressionistic than the first film, and I agree it has more of Tim Burton in it, but that's not a bad thing in my book.
@@paulod27 This isn't a review? It's a commentary track where they discuss and make jokes about the movie. I would say most of the criticisms are valid from a logic and writing standpoint. Tim Burton was never a master when it comes to narrative.
@@PeterG00000 I disagree, it's totally a Batman movie. The aesthetic of Gotham, the looks for the characters, a derranged Bruce Wayne...it's 100% Batman to me.
Not for nothing, but you don't see Bruce Wayne till about 15 minutes into The Dark Knight Rises and you don't see Batman till around the 40 minute mark. Just sayin.
Realize KS is a comedian first... He even states in the Batman commentary that he stole alot of technique from that movie. He may seem like he is tearing into the movies, but its obvious he really loves them. He knows these movies like the back of his hand and as I said, he's a comedian first. I haven't listened to this whole commentary yet, but if you listen with a light heart this is pretty damn hilarious. Same with the first.
@@roughcity1859 I like the attempts to quasi be more serious than the 60s which meant a lot in 89 but Tim Burton is a trash niche director. Always trying to make evil people normal everyday schlubs, always taking these weird shots at normal society and portraying them in some ultra weird John Waters-esque light, and of course clearly hating the source material not because it needed to get more realistic but because it wasn't freaky enough. These two films created BTAS but they are also why BTAS beats them into the ground because BTAS was basically a realistic Batman in a dark deco world.
Saw this film with my dad. Midway thru he fell asleep and was snoring really loud! Talk about embarrassed, but I've seen worse films and liked em! Kevin your hilarious dude, I can imagine chillin out in your dope ass living room getting stoned and talking about movies. It would be awesome!
I was 12 in '89 and I LOVED Batman. the 3 years wait for Batman Returns was HELL. and then I hated the movie. It snapped me out of my batman obsession. I never understood why people defended it. I thought watching this would help me see what i was missing... but shit, you guys make all the same points I had all these years. I maintain Batman Forever is better than Batman Returns.
What did they expect? Tim was a goth in high school, but he was on best behavior on Batman '89. On Batman Returns, he abandoned all self-restraint and put all his goth sensibilities into the movie and hired his goth friends. I mean, Siouxsie and the Banshees appeared on the soundtrack after all. But that's fine with me, I like the movie as a stand-alone art experiment, but I agree it cheated Batman fans out of a film loyal to the franchise.
Elfman's theme was used in Animated Series because the studio said so. It was just that well-known. The cartoon's producers just wanted Shirley Walker's music, but they had to give in.
Lol if Kevin was upset about Batman not showing up for 15 mins then I'd love to hear him when Batman doesn't show up for 55 MINUTES in The Dark Knight Rises
I really like _Batman Returns_ and I also like this commentary. _Returns_ has a lot of narrative issues worth pointing out and making fun of but that doesn't mean I can't still enjoy it as a movie. Burton really only was in it for depicting freaks and doesn't care so much about the stories. I watched the behind the scenes videos of Tim Burton actually wearing a *fuckin' beret* while directing this movie. It's not hard to laugh at some of Burton's "weird, tortured artist" quirks while he's making a superhero film.
Yeah I'm not a Smith fan I love Batman Returns but as I get older it gets harder to watch you can tell this is a Burton film compared to the 1st one where Peters and Giber kept him grounded.
benway20 fuck that. The Burton ones are goddamn solid. This is probably the best Batman movie, and I'll take either two Burton ones, any day of the week before the Nolan ones. Bales Batman voice is sooo laughably bad, it distracts from that movies.
Penguin being the "evil Moses" part cracked me up! Great listen. Good points about Schreck wanting to put Penguin as the mayor, since it really makes no sense. This film has several plot holes when you re-watch it several times, though I still like it for the style.
This Marc Bernardin. My god he sounds exactly like Frank Welker (his natural voice). The guy who did the animated voices of Megatron and Freddie from Scooby-Doo and many many others. I thought through the whole commentary I was listening to Frank.
This wasn't shot at Pinewood studios. It was shot on soundstages in the back lot of WB and Penguin's lair was shot on a soundstage at Universal Studios.
The penguin did kind of suck in this film. Tim Burton should not have made him a mutant, most do not know that Penguin was a human and had 5 fingers. this was the first movie to have penguin with those weird ass webbed hands, and then the cartoon copied it, and so on. i felt this movie was a little too dark and depressing, but it was still pretty good.
Oswald's Depression there's some things I don't like about Gotham, especially at first, but I like the penguin in Gotham, I think he's a very interesting and manipulative character. Way more like the future head mobster he was in the comics
Oswald in Gotham is beyond amazing. He is such a badass determined intelligent cunning character in that show. And this is him starting out. I cannot even begin to imagine what he's going to be like when Batman comes along.
@1:55:42 Man I'll never forget the collective " Ughh.." groan my theater audience made when Penguin emerged from the water 😂...As a lot of people obviously thought they were finally done seeing him and ready to go home 😂. I don't care, lol... I still low key love this movie, all of it's weirdness, and Burtonization of it's characters....
I think Kevin's criticisms are very funny and very valid. However, I love Batman Returns. I love the absurdity of this movie and the melancholy. I love Christopher Walken as Max Shreck, I love Danny's grotesque Penguin. There are some bad lines in this movie but there are also really funny lines. Also, Michael Keaton for me is the best Batman by a mile.
thegooseman he probably influenced that idea. I feel like they probably just stole his idea lol less of a prediction and more of wb just took the idea.
***** oh, i love the arkham games, but i was referring to the Batman Returns game for the Super Nintendo; and when I say "one of the best" I mean for its time.
Batman 89 is like a steak dinner with mash potatoes, green beans, and a glass of water. Batman Returns is like the pastry dessert with loads of whipped cream, chocolate sauce, almonds, and the cherry on top that you KNOW has no nutritional value but you just eat gobs of it anyway because its just so goddamned delicious 😄🤣😂
Then Batman Forever is like the after-dinner bottle of whiskey, and Batman and Robin is like the drunken party where people are puking and throwing food at each other. 😁
@@dreamlandnightmare thank you. The sudden praise for this movie really confuses me. This is literally the Batman movie I remembered least after seeing it. I actually rank it and Forever very close regarding the 89 and 90s Batman movies
(SPOILERS) Both had inconsistent tones. whether it was penguin biting noses off and batman awkwardly fighting circus clowns w/ a goofy song playing in the background and penguin riding a duck or Gwen Stacy's fate and goofy Max Dillon and the German Doctor at Ravencroft. Both had too many villains with little time for each to develop. Max Shreck, penguin, catwoman Electro, Green Goblin, Rhino(barely) Both had too many sub plots going on w/ no basic plot. Oddly enough, I still enjoy batman returns. It's a guilty pleasure at best,
The Amazing Spider-man 2 is my favorite Spider-man movie followed closely by the original Spider-man 2 and my favorite Batman movie is Batman Returns (admittedly mostly from nostalgia) followed closely by The Dark Knight. So you can say that I like direct sequels numbered 2 lol. You made some interesting points though.
afqwcx I don't think many people agree on TASM2, but to each his own. You're on to something about movie number 2 in a superhero often being the best though. At that point they've gotten the origin out of the way and can get right down to business, they still have at least one or two of the best villains left, and they haven't started to run out of good ideas. The third one is often were they run into trouble. Examples: Superman 3, Batman Forever, Spider-Man 3, The Dark Knight Rises (I loved it as did a lot of people, but it was controversial).
I gotta be honest man I kinda do prefer to watch these over the Nolan films. I love the Nolan films but I also love 89 and Returns. To me the movies are almost like reading different stories with different art, everyone has their own take on the characters.
Ryan Kirk Claiming that Batman and Batman Returns are not Batman movies is nonsense. Batman's not speaking much and making big speeches and spouting one-liners because Tim Burton and Micheal Keaton wanted to keep Batman mysterious and eerily silent. Batman Returns writer Daniel Waters said "He's the only actor I know who would go through my script that goes 'I should say less here, I should say less here.' I had so many angry Batman rant speeches and he's like, 'Batman would never say that. Batman should just say this line right here.'" Batman was created in 1939 as a mysterious character modeled after the Shadow. Tim Burton also stayed true to the basic iconic looks of the characters and embraced the fantastical, surreal expressionistic nature of Batman, Joker, etc. with it's roots in German expressionist Gothic horror films like The Man Who Laughs, The Bat, and the Shadow pulps which has it's roots in Dracula. German expressionism/horror movie elements and noir are part of Batman material. He's using elements that are part of the material while making Batman movies.
thecooooolcat Ehh I guess your right this movie is like Batman mixed with A nightmare before Christmas. I take back saying its not a Batman movie what so ever, but I never said the first one didn't feel like a Batman movie.. Putting words in my mouth now that's nonsense..
Hoping someone can clarify the video description: so there's no synching involved? I literally just start playing this commentary at the same time starting up the movie?
i sat down after work to watch this movie with the commentary from smith. I found it hilarious and entertaining. I remember watching this movie in the theater when it was released with my family, and me and my older brother both felt super mixed and at the time, didnt really understand tim burtons humor (which the humor is all over the place in this) and tendency to fail in certain area's of the film. But as much of devito's work as the peguin, i wish he was more English scholar like they portrayed the penguin in the animated series. probably the best penguin was from the burgess, and the animated show!. i still like watching this movie. but man, looking back at it, holy crap! how many writers went back and forth!, and how bad did the studio's intervene on this movie! out of all the suits that were made for batman (not including the nolan suit which was awesome) i liked this batman suit more here then i did the first one.
+Oswald's Depression have not had a chance to watch the gotham show yet. I like the noir look appeal they gave him. Chicago 40s slight gothic. other then that. I need to watch the show
It's such a good show, it's ungodly amazing at times. The first half is okay but has really good parts scattered here and there. Penguin's Umbrella is the best episode in the first part of the season. Episode 12 onwards is amazing. Oswald is definitely the best part of the show. As much as I love Penguin in Batman Returns, Robin Lord Taylor's Penguin is so much more badass and he gets more shit accomplished. True he gets smacked around a bit in the show, however the fact that he accomplishes alot makes up for the fact that he gets smacked around. The dude literally becomes ten percent more badass with every episode. And to think this is just him starting out. I can only imagine what he's going to be like by the final season of Gotham.
24:36 - The reason Selina Kyle has the neon 'Hello There' sign on her wall is that when she later transforms into Catwoman and returns to her apartment, she defiantly smashes and burns out the 'o' in 'Hello' and the 'T' in 'There' thereby making the sign appear to say 'Hell here' - a sort of symbolic contrast to her previous happy and welcoming life as opposed to her newly evil persona.
Well no, it's why was it there in the first place. Did she buy that knowing that someday she'd transform into Catwoman and then have the opportunity to smash it? There's no reason for Selena Kyle, prior to her transformation, to own that dumb sign.
@@whitesneeks4499 It was there as a piece of decorative art that Selena Kyle apparently liked for some reason - sort of like a cross between a 'Welcome' door mat and a tacky neon beer sign. But obviously, Tim Burton and his set decorators put it there for the purpose of subtly illustrating Selena Kyle's dual personality.
Sucks he doesn't feel it anymore -- I totally respect and am inspired by Kevin Smith, so it does suck to hear him crush it -- but I still love the movie. This was one of my favorites growing up, watched it so many times. I'll appreciate it for what it is. I'm going to go cry in a corner now… *sobs uncontrollably* -- But I totally get Kevin Smith, too, because this is exactly how I felt about Terminator 3 and Terminator Genysis, and people dig those movies. Life is funny.
Just curious, did the original uploader here put the video on youtube in such a way as to not allow extracting just the audio? Because I've tried the URL in two different sites that save audio from online video sources and it hasn't worked on either. I've never had that happen before. Mind you, I've already been on this page in the past and played it on here while watching the movie at the same time for the intended experience, but since audio ripping is so easy, I thought I'd save it as mp3 on my HD just in case this ever had to be taken down.
@bigevilworldwide1 you think both the Burton films are a about Batman? He's barely in it he's just jostling for position against Joker, Catwoman, Penquin and Max Shreck. He murders looters, fails to stop multiple crimes, cant fight and none of the movies make a lick of sense. Lay of the crack pipe son.
Batman Returns is the only true film adaptation of Batman where one artists aesthetic works in synthesis to the source material to create something truly unique and amazing, which is the reason why it's my favourite Batman movie of the eight released as of 2022. For those saying Batman Returns wasn't close to comics are missing the whole point of what a true adaptation should be, which is creating your vision rather then somebody else's vision of what Batman and the Gotham City world should be. Lastly the actual creators of the Batman mythology, Bob Kane and even more so Bill Finger both stopped working on Batman by 1964 so everything after that was just someone else's take of their original vision for Batman.
There's a difference between creating your own vision of the source material and totally abandoning the spirit of the source material. The Nolan trilogy is his distinct vision of Batman, but it still stays true to the spirit of Batman. This is just a Tim Burton movie that happens to feature Batman characters.
@@dreamlandnightmareMy original post just went over your head swoosh and "stays true to the spirit of Batman" 😀you literally don't know what you're talking about if you think that. Try reading some of the early Batman comics and the Burton films are far closer to the spirit of those them plus he had the actual creator of Batman on set and gained his approval. The Nolan Trilogy has zilch to do with the origins of batman and were just a James Bond film mixed with a Michael Mann film to create a very polished but rather soulless films.

+FestArc Burton's Batman is the golden age Batman. Schumacher's was the Eisenhower Batman and TV Batman, Nolan's was 70's-modern Batman. Snyder's (unfortunate) Batman is 80's Batman.
@ Hack Snyder's movie is the garbage Batman. Great costume and look, ruined by a horrendous movie.
@ Burton's movies took inspiration from Batman's first publishing year. Batman Forever was the golden age just after Robin's introduction when the tone lightened considerably.
Id watch returns over almost any other batman movie
"Those are just livin' gloves." is one of the most delightfully absurd sentences I've ever heard.
This was an Amazing movie.
this is my favourite batman movie of the old series, and kevins really tearing it a new one..
"Batman RETURNS to his own movie every 18 minutes,, that's why they called it that" 😅
The only part he liked was Bruce standing up
These Reviews Never get Old.
Kevin's Phillip Seymour Hoffman impression was great!
spot on
On one of the shows, they did the percentage of Batman on screen in each film. None was more than like 25 minutes of Batman.
I liked this commentary even though I loved this movie.
I love this !! It’s so damn good
"Gotham Set'y"
"This is the gateway to Schumacher!"
Not for nothing, but you don't see Bruce Wayne till about 15 minutes into The Dark Knight Rises and you don't see Batman till around the 40 minute mark. Just sayin.
That movie sucks.
@@pleaserewind295 Institutionalized disappointment.
Yeah, and that's easily the worst of those three.
Tim Burton also bumped him off the Superman Lives project.
Batman Returns has a terrible screenplay.
Catwoman got her powers through radioactive toxoplasmosis! Awesome Philip Seymour Hoffman impersonation!
hahaha, that out loud reader part had me cracking up. lol
Awesome!
Elfman's theme was used in Animated Series because the studio said so. It was just that well-known. The cartoon's producers just wanted Shirley Walker's music, but they had to give in.
This was only published a few days before Philip Seymour Hoffman died. RIP the best penguin who never was.
And back in the day, there was fan casting PSH as Penguin back when we were all guessing which Villains were gonna be in the Nolan sequels.
1:00:15 So funny how he impersonates clueless Batman fighting Catwoman
1:12:56 Profiling
1:45:11 Kevin's favorite moment in Batman history
+Jack Stickman! Absolutely agree. It struggles to be a 3-act narrative. nonetheless, I enjoy it.
Yeah I'm not a Smith fan I love Batman Returns but as I get older it gets harder to watch you can tell this is a Burton film compared to the 1st one where Peters and Giber kept him grounded.
how is it a shit movie you have shit taste
This commentary reinforces what I and others have been saying for years: The Burton Batman flicks have NOT aged well. At all.
benway20 fuck that. The Burton ones are goddamn solid. This is probably the best Batman movie, and I'll take either two Burton ones, any day of the week before the Nolan ones. Bales Batman voice is sooo laughably bad, it distracts from that movies.
+Jeffrey Rader I agree, Batman Returns is a work of genius.
Jeffrey Rader
Fuck that? Fuck you, buttwipe. The Burton films suck ass.
you're entitled to your opinion, but youre definitely in the minority. Most anyone you talk to will say Batman 89 is their favorite Batman.
I loved this film
Penguin being the "evil Moses" part cracked me up! Great listen. Good points about Schreck wanting to put Penguin as the mayor, since it really makes no sense. This film has several plot holes when you re-watch it several times, though I still like it for the style.
I think its the best pre dark knight batman which isnt saying a whole lot but it definitely had problems
This Pinguin is perfect man, and for me this is one of the best Batman movies.
Fun fact: the guy who plays max shreks son also plays leatherface in the 2003 texas chainsaw massacre remake.
lunatiksAlterEgo He was also Lattimer from “The Program” and “Butterfinger” from “Hudson Hawk”
He's also Zangief in Street Fighter.
Tomdawg89 “Quick, change the channel!”
@@mcflyguy8873 lol yeah i remember him as butterfinger 😂😂
1:16:00 still happens to this day. “To this DAY” ;).
28:00 that theme was used a few times in the series, also main thtme for the first animated movie Mask of the Phantasm
37:04 "Batman Returns to his own movie every 15 minutes"
Perfect 👌
The penguin did kind of suck in this film. Tim Burton should not have made him a mutant, most do not know that Penguin was a human and had 5 fingers. this was the first movie to have penguin with those weird ass webbed hands, and then the cartoon copied it, and so on. i felt this movie was a little too dark and depressing, but it was still pretty good.
+owl316 What's your opinion on Robin Lord Taylor's Penguin from Gotham?
Oswald's Depression there's some things I don't like about Gotham, especially at first, but I like the penguin in Gotham, I think he's a very interesting and manipulative character. Way more like the future head mobster he was in the comics
Oswald in Gotham is beyond amazing. He is such a badass determined intelligent cunning character in that show. And this is him starting out. I cannot even begin to imagine what he's going to be like when Batman comes along.
I still love this movie, it is far from great but I do love it
@1:55:42 Man I'll never forget the collective " Ughh.." groan my theater audience made when Penguin emerged from the water 😂...As a lot of people obviously thought they were finally done seeing him and ready to go home 😂. I don't care, lol... I still low key love this movie, all of it's weirdness, and Burtonization of it's characters....
That's a legit Philip Seymour Hoffman
I think Kevin's criticisms are very funny and very valid. However, I love Batman Returns. I love the absurdity of this movie and the melancholy. I love Christopher Walken as Max Shreck, I love Danny's grotesque Penguin. There are some bad lines in this movie but there are also really funny lines. Also, Michael Keaton for me is the best Batman by a mile.
Some are valid, others are just nitpicks, misunderstanding the context, and factually wrong.
God damn, now I can't not see how sparsely populated Gotham is. Still my favourite Batman movie and one of the best scores ever!
1:15:16 Kevin Smith predicted the Batfleck voice
thegooseman he probably influenced that idea. I feel like they probably just stole his idea lol less of a prediction and more of wb just took the idea.
I love how many times Kevin says, "LOOK at this SHIT, dude." LOL
"Uncle Fester."
Kevin Smith is still awesome.
this movie did give way to one of the best Batman video games, at least there's that....
***** oh, i love the arkham games, but i was referring to the Batman Returns game for the Super Nintendo; and when I say "one of the best" I mean for its time.
Mcfly88 hell yeah i enjoyed playing it as a kid
Mcfly88 and one of the best batman movies - if not the best.
I liken Batman Returns more to weird mixture of sweet and sour that is ultimately unfilling.
@@dreamlandnightmare thank you. The sudden praise for this movie really confuses me. This is literally the Batman movie I remembered least after seeing it. I actually rank it and Forever very close regarding the 89 and 90s Batman movies
Ironically Amazing Spider-man 2 had the same problems as this movie.
How so? That sounds like an interesting analysis.
(SPOILERS)
Both had inconsistent tones. whether it was penguin biting noses off and batman awkwardly fighting circus clowns w/ a goofy song playing in the background and penguin riding a duck or Gwen Stacy's fate and goofy Max Dillon and the German Doctor at Ravencroft.
Both had too many villains with little time for each to develop.
Max Shreck, penguin, catwoman
Electro, Green Goblin, Rhino(barely)
Both had too many sub plots going on w/ no basic plot.
Yeah isn't that funny? I think what you said about direct sequels pretty much hits the nail on the head, at least in my case.
I gotta be honest man I kinda do prefer to watch these over the Nolan films. I love the Nolan films but I also love 89 and Returns. To me the movies are almost like reading different stories with different art, everyone has their own take on the characters.
It really had that comic book styling and Danny Elfman kills the score giving a theme to every character.
This movie is a Tim Burton movie not a Batman movie what so ever but, I still love this film one of my favorite movies
+KiMBo Scott What do you think of Robin Lord Taylor's Penguin?
I can only imagine what he's going to be like by the final season of Gotham.
i will have to check it out on my weekend
"Look at her eyes. There's hell here"
kevin smith's mad about how good this movie is
"This'll teach you!" 🔥 🔥
24:36 - The reason Selina Kyle has the neon 'Hello There' sign on her wall is that when she later transforms into Catwoman and returns to her apartment, she defiantly smashes and burns out the 'o' in 'Hello' and the 'T' in 'There' thereby making the sign appear to say 'Hell here' - a sort of symbolic contrast to her previous happy and welcoming life as opposed to her newly evil persona.
Right? That was an obvious setup that Kevin never calls out.
@@vipersquad And Kevin's usually an observant viewer when it comes to comic book or Star Wars related movies. He must've been having an 'off' day.
Kevin says it best. this movie is a tough sit.
a tough sit?
Batman Returns is a damn good movie. It isn't perfect but its held up way better than the original.
Mind you, I've already been on this page in the past and played it on here while watching the movie at the same time for the intended experience, but since audio ripping is so easy, I thought I'd save it as mp3 on my HD just in case this ever had to be taken down.
lol every now and then you hear the lighter flick and the sound of kevin smith holding smoke in his lungs .
I personally love both of the Tim Burton films over the Nolan trilogy.
This is one of the few things I disagree with Kevin on. I love this movie and see the flaws but he's making it sound like it was painful to watch.
when kevin brings up how ben should use a voice modulator i realized ben did 😂
