The ball valve in piping and Pipeline is a quarter-turn valve suitable for clean gas, compressed air liquid service. They provide leak-tight closure. They provide negligible resistance to flow because of their smooth body and port. They are used for wide range of temperature and pressure applications.
Construction of a Ball Valve:
Main parts of a typical check valve are
Body
Ball
Seat
There is a wide range of seat materials. As if seat made of nylon, synthetic rubbers, graphite, metal backing seat. Seat material is depend on service temperature. With metal seat valve, can used in fire-safe service.
They made in three general pattern venturi port, full port or reduced port. A valve may be unidirectional, bidirectional or multidirectional, depending on the number of valve ports and the number of valve seats. Valve could be 2-way, 3-way, and 4- way multiport valves. Multiport ball valves permit flows in more than one direction than one direction, thus eliminate the need for several valves.
Similarly, ball valves manufactured in several different body configurations, like top entry, side entry, two pieces body, three pieces body. The trunnion mounted ball valve needs substantially smaller torque than floating ball valves.
Advantages of Ball Valve
Quick to open and close
Smaller in size and lighter in weight than gate valve
Operation is easy than gate and globe valve
Provide bubble-tight service
Disadvantage of Ball Valve
In slurry or other applications, the suspended particles can settle, become trapped, and can damage to seat or ball causing leakage or valve failure.
They are not suitable for sustained throttling applications
Common Types:
2-piece Body Ball Valves
3-piece Body Ball Valves
Top-Entry Ball Valves
End Entry Ball Valves
Trunnion-mounted Ball Valves
Floating-Ball Valves
Applications/ Selection of Ball Valve:
Emergency shutdown
Air, gaseous and liquid applications requiring bubble-tight service
Instrument root valves
Steam service
Typical example to purchase a Ball valve
Size DN100
End connection ASME B16.5 RF FB
Pipe Rating CL600
Body ASTM A105 Trunnion
Ball Stainless Steel
Stem Stainless Steel
Seat RPTFE
Spring Inconel X750
