According to the Federal Statistical Office, Lungern measures 46.51 km22.
Lungern borders Kerns, Giswil and Sachseln.
Lake Lungern is used for electricity production (reservoir dam). The Brünig Pass is located to the south.Since 2012, the Lungern tunnel has bypassed the village.
Economy
Agriculture, forestry and the timber industry are predominant. The company Holzbau AG Lungern (Timber Constructions Ltd), founded in 1926, active until 1983 and dissolved in 1989, is at the origin of a large number of buildings, spread over a vast territory.

Winter
In winter, Lungern is an ideal starting point for winter walks or snowshoe tours. The idyllic route that starts from the Brünig pass and descends to Lungern via the Chäppeli can also be taken in winter, on foot or by toboggan.Skiers and snowboarders can quickly reach the ski areas of Mörlialp, Melchsee-Frutt and Hasliberg.
Summer
In summer, a dense network of footpaths and many interesting themed paths invite visitors to explore the village and its surroundings on foot. The pretty circuit around the lake is one of the most popular walking and cycling routes in the region.
The educational trail with 40 information panels along a very beautiful 2.5 km forest path will allow you to discover the interaction between fauna and flora as well as the last ice age. The 30-minute walk from Lungern station to the Chäppeli inn is a delight for families: a playground and a pen with small animals await them.
Lake Lungern, whose water is extremely pure and whose temperature can reach 23 degrees, is ideal for swimming. We should mention in particular the small seaside resort with its sandy beach and its water slide. The mountain lake is popular with pedalo enthusiasts, fishermen as well as sailing (school) and surfing enthusiasts who find constant winds here.
