    I had VNS implantation in 2004 for chronic intractable epilepsy. It really didn’t help control my seizure frequency or severity but it did seem to lessen my postictal (post seizure) recovery time. VNS is also being used for chronic depression and obesity. I am returning to the operating room on 3/30 for VNS explanation and implantation of a new MRI compatible VNS system.

    I greatly appreciate this information, as my husband has been having more than 20 migraine days each month despite use of both oral and injectable prophylactic medications. I will be passing this information along to my clients who are struggling with depression or digestive issues as well as headaches. About 12 years ago, I had a psychotherapy client who had a vagus nerve stimulator surgically implanted to treat intractable, treatment-resistant depression. She was also struggling with chronic constipation, although the medical community did not understand the vagus nerve connection for digestive issues at that time. The stimulator worked beautifully to improve her mood, digestion, and overall health. I hope there will be studies on the effect of this VN stimulator for depression and chronic constipation as well.

    You can put a TENS device on the left side just below the ear, about where the vagus nerve runs through the area of the ear. The TENS will absolutely stimulate the vagus nerve and I have noticed results using it daily for 15 minutes per day, for 10 to 15 days.

    • @Nightbird.
      @Nightbird. 4 роки тому +2

      Nicholas -I was just wondering the same thing since I use a TENS device with pads on my legs and feet to help with Neuropathy. But I have a dear friend who suffers from migraines and her extremely expensive medications are barely working anymore. Can you recommend or provide an Amazon link to a TENS unit that you think will work to stimulate the vagus nerve yet is very simple to use? And do you use two pads going up and down under the left ear or diagonally? And how far down under the left ear lobe do you apply the pads? Thanks!

    • @NickC702
      @NickC702 3 роки тому

      @@Nightbird. there are tons of inexpensive TENS units on Amazon right now, they are all pretty similar, I think just about any one you choose will suit the purpose, especially because the vagus nerve does not run very deep below the skin. I would also say, look up videos that point out where the nerve runs and get a good idea about where it is, then, yes I would start out about an inch below the ear right on line with where you have pin pointed where the nerve should be and I would put a second TENS pad about another inch below that. Start on low frequency and gradually build up. You want to feel it pretty good, but you don't want it to the point of discomfort, so about as high as you can stand comfortably. You want to learn all that you can about the vagus nerve, then apply the TENS to it in various areas to experiment. The TENS is safe so it can only help to apply it to different areas of the neck. Best of luck, I will add you and your friend to our prayer list, that can't hurt either!

    • @Nightbird.
      @Nightbird. 3 роки тому +1

      @@NickC702 Thanks for that info. I forgot that I already had a TENS unit..so I applied both pads from one channel on the left side of my neck just underneath my ear lobe..but was disappointed that the electrical current kept going in and out and wasn't steady like when I use the current on other parts of my body. So I opened a new pack of pads..but the effect was the same. My neck is a bit thick at 19 1/2 inches around..so maybe that's the problem?

      Nightbird I’m in the uk so we get it on the nhs whichbis amazing! I’ve been using mine for about two weeks now and it certainly isn’t a magic cure for me. But I know every case is individual. I do think the more I use it that the intensity of my clusters are quite as much. But I do need more practice and to use it double the amount of times I’m using it. So need to persevere. I’m very lucky to be living in the uk where we have access to it. We all know how debilitating clusters are so anything and everything available is necessary to help try and control them. To be honest the level of meds I’m on for clusters if we didn’t have nhs here I have no idea how I would manage full stop.

      @@gemgem9713 Thanks. I have tried using my TENS unit on my Vagus Nerve..but for some reason the stimulation is sporadic and not consistent like when I use it on other body parts. The vegus nerve isn't in the gut but it may affect the gut as it does many other areas of the body and brain. You can yawn to activate the vague nerve, lift your toes up, move your eyes side to side, etc. In essence, you can naturally heighten the activity of the nerve, although this device may be a much quicker and or effective method. It can also be utilized to help in speech therapy. Do some searches on how to focus exercises to activate it and what benefits it has been attributed to.
