Disaster Restoration: Fixing All The FIRE DAMAGE On My CHEAP Z28 Camaro

  • I bought a 1993 Chevy Camaro Z28 that caught on fire yesterday. Today we're going to cut all the fire damage out of it and replace it all with new. Nylon "non-repairable" fuel lines had burnt, wires melted, plastic had turned into glass art, the fire caused lots of issues. After a full day of work I should have this old LT1 Camaro back on the street and ready to cause havoc again.

What do I do for a living? Make UA-cam videos.

Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.

Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Nice man, is it weird to watch the progress of it getting fixed on here ??!? Especially when you know everything about the car ?? Like when JR says “ whoever installed this at this time did it backwards or used this brand parts, or I don’t know why someone would install this” (lol) but you know the answer to everything he asked ... gotta be super crazy lol

@@B0xlife1 more sad to see it since it’s no longer mine. But yes definitely weird! All the sketchy things JR has mentioned have been done by previous people, so it’s more of a facepalm moment! Haha.

I love that doorman fuel line repair kit I used to work on Chevrolet fleet cars and that kit paid for itself after the first couple times using it. And the fact that it has all the tools and fittings and is labeled makes it easy to get the job done right.

Oetiker clamps are the best ever. That Dorman tool is slick, beats trying to use your hands to shove a heated nylon hose over a fitting (and mangling it several times in the process).

I looked on my 93 PPM Z, that metal 90 degree elbow in the fuel line is factory. The hose clamp is not, and there should be a little a little rubber boot over where it connects to the hardline.
If you can still buy the GM 1LE induction elbow, it is exactly the same as the original, it just doesn’t have the hole cut out for that noise reduction tube.
I love this content. Keep it coming.

That repair kit is pretty sweet. I served some time in a TI Automotive factory in a prior life that's pretty much the process the actual swaging machines use.
I'm not sure I would have used the clamps. I'm wouldn't be so much worried about abrasion, but stress risers in the surrounding material. Nylon isn't too terribly compressible.
Anyhow, it's _probably_ not going to burst into flames, which is really any of us can say about our work if we're honest. 😆

They do make a billet aluminum plug for that plastic intake resonator tube. I have one on my 97 camaro ss.
The air foil thing seems to be a plus too.
I wouldn't disconnect the water from the throttle body, it helps with fuel vaporization in colder weather.

Hi JR, I am so glad you got this sweet Camaro going again however I just wanted to share a concern with you. Do you know why the fuel line hole started to begin with? I used to own a 1995 S-10 which I purchased new in 1995 and traded back in Dec 2004. Long before I traded it, many of the under-hood plastics had become brittle from heat exposure from the engine. While I never had a fuel line issue, I did have wiring insulation and most certainly vacuum hoses that were just dried out or destroyed from the heat within the engine bay.
If this may have been what caused the initial fuel line breach in the Z28, that entire fuel line is likely very brittle and now, having a long metal connector on the inside of of the fuel line may end up creating new breaks in the line because the metal pushing against the brittle nylon line.
I will say, I think that what you did was the best possible repair for using the existing fuel lines but just wanted to share a concern that I had about it.
Congrats on getting her going so quickly!
    Have a great day!

Glad you got her back on the road, I've always loved the silly impractical wedge shape of these 4th gen f-body cars. Looks like a poor man's Jaguar XJ220 IMO. I really think the GM designers had a bit of Lamborghini Countach influence in the design, in the crazy raked windshield, the low hood, the stupidly low seating position and overall height, those wide rear fenders. Yeah it might not look like the Countach, but both the Countach, 93-97 Firebird/Camaro subscribe to that slightly angry rubber door stop look lol.
