  • HENRYK M. BRODER: "A declaration of bankruptcy" Police shock with Netflix subscription for knife proposal
The high number of crimes committed with knives is causing concern among the police. To counteract this, the police union is proposing immunity from prosecution for handing in prohibited knives and even material incentives such as a one-year Netflix subscription. More checks are not possible due to a lack of staff.
WELT columnist Henryk M. Broder from the Welt sees this proposal as a declaration of bankruptcy by the police. He emphasizes that knife crimes have only been recorded in Germany since 2020 and that around 14,000 cases were registered in 2023 alone, which means around 40 crimes a day. He criticizes the idea of Netflix subscriptions as inadequate and instead suggests offering books as a reward to achieve an educational effect.
"When I read the news you just quoted, I thought the Titanic had struck again."
