About ten years ago I was trying to emulate Miles' 1980s sound. I found out from someone who worked at Holton that he had got them to substantially deepen his mouthpieces so that when he was using the clip on radio microphone it had lots of extra low end. The microphone and transmitter didn't do that too well. Just thought I would mention it as its another kind of microphone.
Thanks..Piano/Hammond player all my life..but, like you, have always loved Miles Davis...Just bought a trumpet & Harmon mute and will work at it with the excellent guidance your video gives. Ray Mitchell Jazz
Thanks, I'm trying to listen to Miles all summer and I honestly couldn't tell what mute he was using. "Solo mute? Straight mute? Can't be harmon, I don't sound like that with a harmon..." This answers my question. I also listened to a ton of Chet Baker this summer, and he definitely gets the smoky tone in his later records.
I love harmon mute sound, but getting the mic'ing situation right for live gigs is always so hard. It's usually either too quiet or, if I get right into the mic, it's super shrill. I've been using a Trumcor Zinger bubble mute which has a great tone, but is naturally a little louder.
Love your videos Bob! I share your love of Miles Davis! Any chance you could do a video on mouthpiece choice please? How much should a trumpeter chop n change mouthpiece, or stick to the same mouthpiece? Thanks 👍🎺❤️

Awesome lesson. I was wondering why when I used the mute it didn’t sound like Davis at all, this definitely helps in getting closer!
Great video! Makes me wanna consider upgrading my current mute
I find the tones you can get out of mutes so fascinating

I am a huge Miles fan and love this video. Any chance you could do a video on how to ghost notes like Miles does?
Really nice video, thx!
Man, I've got miles to go.
That looks like a pun to me
Miles and miles. But Miles Smiles.
Great video, thanks§,
Big thanks from Hong Kong
Can you talk about some daily exercises for beginner next time?
could you also use a harmon mute 5194 on a martin imperial cornet?
Oi! whats happened to the MS20 that was on the top of the back shelf? I was hoping to hear your horn through the external input processor!
Can you talk about Michele lacerenzas trumpet and sound?
Sir, hope next video is about lip trill technique.. Your video ia easy to understand because with demonatation.
Hey Bob - when I use a Harmon I need to pull tuning slide out to stay in tune. Is that expected/common?
makes you feel like a detective in a black and white movie.
The street ain't the same Tony, the streets changed. (DOodoodoodooo doooo)
you are actually still too far from the mic-you have to get right up on it if you are looking for the classic Miles tone...
