Solar flares & solar wind can push satellites out of position & ideal orbits - corrections have to be made using onboard thrusters after a solar storm. Being out of position I imagine may have an effect on the measurements.

On the same page, further down, there is a four hour data plot of the Svartsengi GPS station, and there the data points more or less alternate between two levels, like an ebb and flow movement.
I have a totally amateurish (if not nonsensical) idea: the weight of the lava outflow of the last year has become so heavy, that the magma is experiencing a pressure that squeezes it into another direction, like toothpaste. It can no longer lift the ground as it had done before. Maybe it even travels to a different place before it breaches the surface. The issue is: I have no idea where.

As long as the eruption is still planned for December 24 so we can all have nice "foreplace videos" for Chrsitmas, I am OK 🙂
There are 2 systems t counter ionosphere problems with GPS: WASS and DGPS. For DGPS, you have a local station with known location, and if weather conditions cause GPS signals to wander around, the DGPS unit sees this and will broadcast corrections to GPS units in the region. However, I am not sure if this works for altitude and it assumes that the ground doesn't move (since DGPS uses its known fixed position as reference against a position calculated from GPS signals).
WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) is similar except the corrections are sent to a satellite and GPS receivers in this larger area can receive those corrections. This does not have actual weather corrections, only ionosphere/space weather ones since it applies to larger area.

I wondered if the receiving chamber had increased in size slightly, and therefore, pressure had dropped, and or gave the impression of a reduction in flow. I guess we're closer to knowing the answer (a week or two away from the previous pattern of eruptions). I guess also that the fault is conscious enough to want to delay the next eruption until Santa Claus needs the additional light when travelling south from Lapland.

one possible interpretation of the GPS data, is that the rate of influx is still constant, but the primary storage zone is draining into other zones faster, or, tat is to say, into the existing Dyke. this would also correlate Potentially to the current low rate of seismicity existing near the Dyke in the central zone. which could indicate that the Dyke is being filled, but has not reached the eruptive capacity or the critical mass to set off an eruption. that is, at least my own understanding of the possibilities that present itself based on the data and what we have seen in previous events.

If you meant hot spot plume? It would shift in south-east as the main plume is directly under Barbarbunga.

  • @CelestialSounds2

Sounds like magma is moving through new areas. We saw this before and the eruption shifted.

If the minor quakes along that fissure have any significance, it looks possible that the pause in uplift could be due to the refilling of the fault system towards the last volcanic activity.
    Time will tell.

Some people in physics, to counter the idea of “error” by calling the vertical lines error bars, some physicists often refer to them as “uncertainty estimates”.
It certainly is easier to say “error bars”. 😉

There is no evidence of slowed magma influx, Shawn.
Current data clearly shows that it is still producing 4,5c3/s for inflow rate, as there is no inclination for decreasing inflow. The reason why you see variations in inflows/GPS is due to shallow sill storage expanding laterally in north to west plus injecting small volumes of fresh magma into the dike, it explains why uplift seems to be "slow" as data supports it. For example, latest INSAR imaging clearly shows that there is new inflation starting to expand to dike itself followed by GPS still showing continuous uplift at BL and now dike.
And now, we're starting to see more clusters of earthquakes at the main feeder at entrance of the dike from Blue Lagoon between two big hills which it tells us that magma is starting to come in to the dike in small volumes more frequently as shallow sill storage is now full after today. We'll see more like this for while until main eruption.
