      I'm no fan of Owen Jones believe me, but here I do think he was very patient when confronted with Starkey's crude stereotyping.
      The thing is David Starkey knew exactly what he was saying: we can debate to what extent he truly believes it, but he loves to get a reaction. Listen to the old Moral Maze episodes where he was a panellist and you'll hear his search for edginess in full effect.

    I think David needed to be much clearer that he is referring to a very particular subset of black culture - gang culture - and understand more around the socio-economic conditions that gives rise to this culture. There is no such thing really as 'black culture' as a whole - there are many subsets of black culture which express in different ways. Reggae for example glorifies peace, love and harmony, whilst gangster rap culture glorifies violence and misogyny.

    • @pixels2u
      @pixels2u 2 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately, DS doesn't (or didn't) grasp that it was a subset of blacks, which is the basis of all racism - to paint a whole race or culture as bad for the actions of a few. Very disappointing to see him miss that glaring point. Some people are just looking for reasons to hate, it feels so good.

    There is not empathy in society anymore. A History teacher of mine, once told me that was the greatest asset a historian could possess.
    When someone complains about immigration in this country, I don't automatically dismiss their argument, I may not agree with it, but I can try to understand what it is exactly that has made them feel the way they do. Until we as a society listen, and try to come to an understanding we will always be left with a part of society that feels alienated.

    He’s wrong, it isn’t ‘black culture’ that is the problem. The problem is deprivation in predominantly black communities and boroughs. And to blame the black people in these communities for this alone is intellectually dishonest, ignoring the fact successive governments (Labour and Tory) have forgotten, if not actively ignored the plight of these communities. Lack of access to quality housing, quality living environments, jobs, quality education etc. The institutional discrimination in the police to boot. Crime and antisocial behaviour is a symptom of the root problem that is deprivation. The music he derides as culturally regressive is just a reflection of the world these young black men see when they wake up in the morning. How about we look at this and realise that’s the issue here. Not condoning the riots by any means, but happy, healthy, well off people don’t riot. It isn’t white vs black.

  • @easylyt
    @easylyt 13 років тому +8

    If anything i think these "riots" have shown how well intergrated the different cultures are in England. We had whites asians blacks rampaging the streets with very little infighting amongst themselves, and in many cases helping and looting together .
    As dire as i think what they did is,i don't see anything that points to a break down in multiculturalism, more of a breakdown of the culture/society as a whole

The accent in question is called Roadman or MLE (Multicultural London English). Its a sub culture. Many kids in London schools speak this accent (Black/White/Asian) because its considered streetwise. However, many will struggle to be taken seriously when they become adults in the working world because its not exactly considered the language that educated members of society use.

    3 of them all setting about him like rabid hyenas. Shutting him down, interuppting him, putting words into his mouth. Totally unwilling to let him speak or to listen to any of his points. In fact petrified of him finishing any point he makes lest the audience at home see that its valid. This is sickening to watch.

    your so right! you have changed my my whole outlook on David Starkey! He is not a racist! He is just misunderstood right? Guys like him should run the world, things would be sooooo much better. Those damn rappers are the problem, its not the media its the artist! you are so smart, you make your points so clear, you have it all figured out! I wish I was more like you. From now on when I meet a racist I'll remind myself to take my own advice and not interupt them while they are making their point.

    I think he was absolutely spot on! It's no coincidence that the riots happened in cities with large black communities. It's also one of the reasons why Scotland was completely unaffected by it, despite some areas - particularly parts of Glasgow and the surrounding areas - being among the most deprived in the UK! We Scots haven't had our culture diluted, or our national pride tempered by years of mass immigration to the same extent as our English brethren. It's time that the PC brigade stopped b

No she made sure we spoke standard grammatical non-accented English'.

    People are too stupid to understand the nuance of what Starkey was saying. He worded it badly but he wasn't actually being racist -- he was blaming culture. Culture is not defined by race, you can raise a baby however you want to raise it. If a black baby for example was raised in a posh part of England he would behave like the people around him. Whether liberals want to admit it or not, unfortunately there is a "destructive nihilistic gangster culture" that is prevalent within poor black urban communities (something which the media in fact embellishes and glamourises with the degenerate rap music they happily push upon the masses). You need to address this "culture" or you will never make progress.
    The nuance here is that Starkey was specifically calling out this culture which has infected traditional Britain. He wasn't saying that if you're born black you're automatically a degenerate. Again, he worded it badly, but he was calling out this essence of "black culture" (which it is, you can deny it all you want but it is), he was not referring to biology.

    Racism was here long before race riots.
    Immigration is what's causing our largely peaceful society to deteriorate. People care about and trust their neighbours less in more "diverse" societies, which makes it easier for people to act the way we saw last week. Ethnically homogenous societies are the happiest and most peaceful, and we should aspire to maintain them.
