A film about Photography in 2022, for me… and maybe you

- Hey everyone, happy 2022! I wanted to kick off the new year on this channel with something a little different. I recently did a trip to Snowdonia for a couple days of hiking, and instead of shooting a trip video, I decided to make this short film, just talking about three things that I think are incredibly important for photographers, and that is key to growth, and that I’ll be focusing on this year. These are the things that matter most to me. I hope you enjoy it.
Also, just want to say thanks to Blackmagic Design for supporting this channel and this video in particular. This was shot using the Pocket 6K Pro.

beautiful as always, brother. So much of this resonated with me, appreciate you sharing it. 💫
Thank you, dude! Appreciate you checking it out. 🙏
I’m digging your color correction on the B roll shots. It feels aged and imperfect. Those oranges and blues look fantastic. Great message, great job.
Thank you!
It's 2023. I so appreciate the authenticity in all of your videos.
Great 👍.
There is a battle between us and ourselves . A grand battle between our inside interests and External requests of the environment Just this . All about self satisfaction . Trying to do what make myself happy and Live for myself . That's really HARD .
Good luck and have a great year .
Beautifully and wisely said. Breathtaking scenery!
Beautiful film, very inspiring. I'm up in the north of England and dabbled with photography for years but my New Year's resolution is to get out more and take some damn photos. It's really just a confidence issue, but we've got some wonderful scenery up here so I'm making a commitment to do it!
Cheers, Pete. Definitely beauty waiting to be found everywhere, just gotta get out there and explore!
Looking forward to what 2022 brings us!
All so true. Thank you for your wisdom and your beautiful video. Gorgeous light!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Colour grading here are absolutely beautiful❤️
🙏
awesome man, really hit home.
Very true, great words. Set goals and get started. Thanks for the video.
Cheers, Bernie!
Great advice for so many of us, in particular those who work alone. Thanks a lot Kyle!
Cheers, Rogier.
beautiful colorgrading!!! As always!
Thank you. 🙏
Love tge colours on this
Kyle, I'm sorry but your monologue went into the background because of the mesmerizing cinematography and color grading you've made. It's so beatiful! I'll try listening one more time but I can't promise I won't be drawn by the visual story again...
Glad you enjoyed this one, Plamen!
HNY Kyle!!! Looking forward to what you have in store for 2022!
Cheers!
Very relatable video and definitely agree with this vibe. I would also like to make the rest of this year much more intentional.
Biggest challenge for me is getting the UA-cam algorithm to acknowledge my existence, it's ok , I love what I do and will take great pleasure in watching my home videos when I'm in the old peoples home stuck in a wheelchair. When I'm 6 feet under they can watch their dads old videos on UA-cam!
Thanks for this one, Kyle. Agree with all of it. Wish you the best for 2022.
Cheers, Antonio. Happy new year!
Another beautiful film.
holy shit, this is gold. all really great things to think about moving forward... cheers to 2022 buddy.
Cheers, man!
Thank you Kyle . We appreciate you man.
Thanks!
Beautiful video and great insights 😊 I look forward to another year of watching your videos 😊😊
Great thoughts. Also beautiful film. Wow. 👍
Thank you. 🙏
Beautiful message Kyle
Such a good and true video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Thx!!!
This was right on time. I need to hear all of this. Thank you.
You're welcome!
This was beautiful dude...both in terms of the message and also the scenes you captured as well. Really enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Damn, I needed this. Thank you
I like what you said about not letting it consume you and neglect the other things in life that are important. It's easy for it to do that. Lovely video, thanks! Looking forward to what you have planned in 2022, and how gorgeous is that trail! I hiked the Glydr Fawr path (I think that's what it was called) and would love to go back and do more there.
Thank you! And yeah, that area is amazing. The Gldyr Fawr path is next on my list!
Incredibly well said, and shot. Thanks dude 👏
Cheers, Michael!
This felt like you talked directly to me. Thanks!
Happy to hear that, Peter. Cheers.
Great reminder! Thanks for the video!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Lovely little video, and so true that less is so often more,
The photography channels I really value on UA-cam all happen to be ones that don’t have loads of drone footage, and enticing titles, but just genuine content.
Thanks for all your great work in 2021.
I appreciate that, Bruce. Thanks for watching and happy new year!
Beautiful colours and a great message.
Thank you.
Very well done sir!
Kyle, this is such a beautiful and meaningful video. It just resonates. Thank you.
Great video and loving the effect you have out on the clips that your talking over.
Wise words.
Well put amigo - totally on point on how many of us are feeling atm.
Thanks for the reminders, Kyle!
All the best for 2022
Thanks, Matthieu! Same to you.

Loved this
Much respect for making videos like this Kyle. Certainly resonated with me and what I’ve been thinking about and trying to work on last year and continuing to do so this year. Beautiful visuals too 👊🏽 happy new year to you!
Thanks, Sathya! Happy new year to you as well.
Incredible scenery. You live in a beautiful part of the world. Appreciate the insights as well.
Cheers, John!
Love your channel... and share the love for Contax 🤩
thank you!
Great video and very pertinent messages Kyle. I've watched your channel all last year (and I've caught up on your previous year's work too) and you've taught and inspired me so much for which I thank you. I have just purchased a beautiful Mamiya RB67 and I am looking forward to going out with it in 2022 and I'm also, really looking forward to seeing what you do this year too. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, Steve. Enjoy the RB, it's a great camera. Happy new year!
Big fan of your channel my friend! I came across it this year and I can't get enough. Love your look, love your editing and most of all, I love your message.
Thanks for watching, Kelby. Glad you've enjoyed the vids!
It's Snowdonia; it's Kyle McD and it all resonates - what's there not to enjoy :) Happy New Year Kyle, looking forward to see where you take us in 2022. Looking forward to where I take myself too.
Thanks Morris. Happy new year!
I were almost to taken away by the beautiful filming to listen to what you said! It kind of blended in which in a sense made it resonate even more. Especially as you're talking about finding balance in work and personal life.
Thanks for making me ponder over my choices.
Glad you enjoyed it, Robert. Thanks for watching.
One of my favorite videos of yours! Thanks for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it, Drew!
Amazing video and message Kyle!
Thank you. 🙏
Caring advice, delivered beautifully. Especially liked the bit about slowing down and appreciating the moment.
Thank you. 🙏
Going to be coming back to this video throughout the year! One to note is slow down, take time and embrass projects rather than rushing🧡
Beautiful, truly inspiring and very relatable. Having switched from mobile to film photography last year made me slow and enjoy more the process, the mistakes and all that. I guess I'll carry on. Thank you and happy 2022!
Thanks!
This hits the nail on the head. Been suffering from all of this lately and finding passion for my work is hard with the pandemic still raging on and work being mundane. Appreciate the perspective man. I'll return to this whenever I need to remind myself that I am still human. Cheers.
Glad you connected with this one, Antonio!
This was an inspiring video and beautifully shot. I feel ready to kick off 2022 with a balanced mindset
Cheers, Josiah!
Happy New Year, Kyle. An important set of messages, thank you. Photography-wise, 2021 was my least productive year in a very long time. My plan for this year is to get out more, enjoy the process, and hopefully make more photographs that please me. I really enjoy the content on your channel.
Thanks Chris! This was my least productive year from a final image standpoint, but busy from an actual image making standpoint. Just didn’t make much that I would consider keepers. I feel like there was a lot of experimentation, which is just as important, IMO.
Fantastic one, as always Kyle! #2 resonated immediately - couple of days ago "I missed" the most spectacular snowy day in the mountains just because I was, almost posessed by a demon! Uder tremendous pressure to make the video, to take many, many great photographs, if possible couple of reels for my social... My brain got so clouded that I completely forgot to be present and to enjoy these moments. Not to mention that I forgot to appreciate having the freedom and such a rare oportunity to not have to go to a 9-5 office job. So foolish. Thanks for making this one! :)
Cheers, Alexander! I can relate to your experience, many times! It's easy to get caught up in things and not appreciate the moment.
Thanks again for this amazing piece. This was my third time watching this from start to finish and it really resonates with me. Plus as an added bonus, the color in this is simply stunning and just pure joy to watch.
I appreciate that! Glad you enjoyed this one!
Happy New Year brother! 🙏❤️
Happy new year!
It's very hard to make good quailty contents. I want to make my contents this year. after watched your videos made me cheer up :-))
When I watch your videos just make me feel very relieve. Sometime I can't get it everything. (English is not my mother language.)
Thanks great messages and motivations :-))
Kyle thanks for the video! Keep going!
Cheers, Wim!
This video is really incredible, please keep making such good content, with all my support❤️❤️❤️
🙏
Love your channel! Comment for the algorithm
😁🙏
Amazing
This is awesome, Kyle!
Cheers, Robbie!
Great video
Hai Kyle I love your channel , always wait for you videos and above all I love your cinematography. From India
Thank you, John!!
This is beautiful!
🙏
Beautifule as usuala. But youe speach is right to the point. Slow down and ourself makes mistakes. This is the best lesson to lear.
love this video
Thanks, Shane.
Hello mate. I love and support you and your channel everyday. One tip: would you do a video where you explain the difference between scanning a negative and scanning a negative handprint? I see that many professionals do so and the result is incredible.
Thanks, Danny!
Let it be about a fulfilling journey, not a perfect one.
Absolutely.
Awesome! Would be nice to see a video tutorial on how to get that film look.
Beautiful as always. The footage is stunning - is it super 8 or a digital representation. The colours just looked amazing. And of course, great insights and words to remember on our journey!
Thank you. 🙏 It was shot digital on the Blackmagic 6K, and then graded like that in post.
enjoyed alot!
Cheers!
film or digital doesn't matter, let's just enjoy photography
Agreed
I would agree.
respect Kyle, respect.
🙏
Nice! :)
Yup slowing down is super important. It's even better to shoot for 10 years and make an album :D
I feel like the shot at 2:30 is print-worthy! I appreciate your advice to slow down. I've used shooting film as a way to do that, since digital practically begs to be edited and posted immediately. But lately I've been taking digital shots and intentionally sitting on them for 24 hours to get some distance and forget them a little bit before reintroducing myself to them in the edit. I think I'm less precious with them and more willing to cut the cruft. I see friends, family, and several people I follow all rushing to post photos of things the moment after they happen, as if this type of near-real-time reaction gives any space for a moment to have an impact. I've found my intentional delaying and slowness has resulted in photos I'm much prouder of than if I'd stepped out of the moment to hurry to just "get something up".
I also enjoy the delay in seeing the final images. Something I may have to try with digital in the future. Just sitting on them for a bit!
What a lovely message and sentiment to share as we journey forward with an equal amount of uncertainty and optimism. I will be loading up my bicycle in one month and touring the entire pacific coast of Mexico with my 35mm, medium format, and a 4x5! I'm also interested in making short films a long the way but don't have much knowledge of digital cameras for video. any recommendations?
Sounds amazing! Best of luck with your journey. I use the Pocket 6K Pro from Blackmagic which is amazing. But maybe you’d want something more compact if you’re on a bike. I also use the Fuji X-T4 which is highly recommend. Has a very nice image for video.
Could you upload a version with music only? I watched half of it without sound and its great. It even conveys your message almost just as well in my opinion.
Great video! Would love to know how you color grade this video footage and how you got those halations on the highlights? Thanks kyle.
Thanks Jason. This was done with a power grade for DaVinci called Cineprint16.
@@KyleMcDougall thanks my man!
What do you ise for a mic?
