What is it about how he got into the music business that bothers you, Davvy? Just curious. I was under the impression that he was a musical prodigy from an early age , taught by his father and then cut his teeth doing small bluegrass festivals until he blew up. Seems like a humble, hardworking dude in my opinion
I was wondering the same thing
Same! ???🦗🦗🦗
I heard some stories about some "Crossroads" and "making a deal..." who knows?
Betting this doesn't get answered.
I was thinking the same thing. How can a deadhead guitar lover not love Billy Strings? The dude is this era’s Jerry.
Wharf rat is definitely up there in my top favorite Dead tunes. Billy and his band did justice to the song. Sounded sweet.
His Dark Star in 2nd set on 4/11/21 in Mobile is ABSOLUTE fire!!
Hate that song when dead do it, can't imagine it getting any better 🤣
@@NoURider sucks for you. never heard of a GD fan saying they 'hate' Dark Star.
How did he enter the music industry that bothers you?
Being to good
Billy didn’t make a UA-cam reaction video starting off by slandering other artists reputations because of pure jealously then refuse to elaborate when questioned in his comments. No one loves this low life weirdo. Who would want to work with an insecure artist unwilling to stand behind and clarify his public slandering accusations he casts about other artists?
could be referring to the rumor that Billy Strings was actually made in a laboratory. its a well known rumor that i made up right now.
Been seeing Billy pretty consistently for about 2.5 years now and one thing I'll say is he has genuinely gotten so much better from the first show I saw until now. He also hasn't done a Dead song since May 2022 after he did a couple nights with Bob Weir at the Ryman.
One of my favorite Dead covers (sort of) he does is Me and My Uncle in Port Chester, NY. There's a good video on UA-cam of that one if you wanna check it out!
Can I ask what you dont like about how he got into the music scene. As a fan of him im just curious.
What's up with Billy, what about his start in the business?
Right? He was asked to play with Don Julin, who was also from Michigan, to play on a gig with him, ended up playing with him for four years? Then gained a lot of attention like that. Idk what this brother is talking about.
What did he do controversially to get into the business?
Gotta check out the Billy cover of wharf rat from 3.3.22 at the sylvee in Madison, WI. It was the first show Alex ever played with the band and his fiddle fit so perfectly into the vibe of the song
2:58 I would LOVE for you to elaborate further on this. Because if you are going to have a bias right off the rip we should also try and understand the bias ourselves. From what I have gathered, this kid has been playing and grew up around music his whole life. I find it hard to believe someone of his skill level doesn't have a well earned role as his position in bluegrass music.
I wouldn’t consider it a bias. I think my reaction to the video was fair and overall positive. I didn’t see it as pertinent enough to go into detail on.
@@TobyDavvy I appreciate the reaction. I think fans see Billy as his wholesome & genuine self (especially for growing up in a meth house)… so fans might get a bit protective ☺️ I hope you learn more about him. I think you’d quickly see all his positive vibes would come through ✨
Agreed, this was an odd comment. Maybe I’m ignorant to Billy’s come up (even though it’s documented pretty well). Curious why you had this take?
@@TobyDavvy Yeah it's weird casting aspersions on Billy's journey, then not saying what the issue is, pretending to know something others don't .
@@TobyDavvyprobably shouldn’t have mentioned it all then really if you’re not gonna back it up 🤷
They played it very carefully. Loved the vocals...Billy has such a distinct voice!
More play dead! Thanks for all the content Davvy! 🎉
My fave Billy Dead is the Help->Tangled Up in Blue->Slipknot!->All Fall Down->Franklin’s. I love. Haven’t felt this way since ‘95 but each to his own. ❤️
What's all fall down? Throwing stones 🤔
Whats all fall down? Throwing stones?
@@NoURider All Fall Down is a song by John Hartford.
What about how Billy got into the music industry are you not a fan of?
the hawaii with Bill k has its moments
some times 1 second of nothing makes a universe of feeling. Love your love of the things. Keep going on the Beam Brother.
Yes. It's fucking fantastic.🤘
A few years ago I heard him do a version of Peggy O, and felt like I had to see him play at the Greensboro Coliseum, and it was probably the best bluegrass show I've ever seen. They played a really good version of Samson and Delilah. He does Cassidy, which I enjoy. Super talented, so hot right now. But, I still think Drive is the best bluegrass album of all time.
So, You'e not a fan of working you butt off for 10 years before gaining recognition?? I don't understand how you're " not really a fan of " hard work...
I don’t understand how you got that from anything I said. Some of y’all probably shouldn’t watch reaction videos. Too sensitive to what other people think.
@@TobyDavvy I’m just curious about what you aren’t a fan of regarding how he entered the music industry. Also seems to be what the other comment is referring to. I’m a huge Billy fan and definitely get certain critiques but i’m wondering if there’s something I missed there.
@@TobyDavvy
yes, please elaborate further regarding your 'I don't like how he got into the music business' comment.
Everyone is asking....
Such a loaded thing to say from someone who admittedly hasn't listened to Billy much, hasn't seen Billy live and definitely never saw Jerry live either.
FYI, Billy and the band aren't attempting to exactly duplicate the original artist when they play covers, they put their own spin on it.
✌
@@TobyDavvy ahole
What was wrong about how he entered the scene? Kinda seems like this dude is just throwing things around here with no real basis
Dark star>love and regret>dark star from the capitol theater is awesome
Let’s see some Jazz is Dead with Jimmy Herring. They have a sweet video of Terrapin Station
Sounded great. A little reserved maybe? I agree that a bluegrass jam thrown in there would have been fun.
“I don’t listen to much music being a player of music” is the strangest humble brag from someone whose entire channel is about other people’s music
I don’t know how that’s supposed to be a humble brag. It’s just how it is, bro. I don’t really listen to music. I play music all the time, so sometimes it’s nice to give my ears a rest and listen to people talk, ya know? I listen to a lot of podcasts and video essays. I also try to be careful about the influences I let in. Because they will influence my playing whether I’m conscious of it or not, and I want to stay as genuine as I can in my playing.
@@TobyDavvy LOL
For the ultimate live Billy check out "meet me at the creek...Winston-Salem" from last year 38:44 video
You'll will see see and hear one of the best
It was my first BMFS show
if you want a bluegrass jam, there’s a vid of him doing jackaroe. it’s pretty great
love your guitar man!
I’ve been waiting for this video
Have you ever done a play dead “death don’t have no mercy” cover?
Billy RIPS up Deal at the Capitol on Feb 5 2022. You should check it out!
Yes this is a must watch - would love a reaction video for this one!
It always seems a bit pompous for a musician to critique another young brilliantly talented from the soul performing musician, covering a Grateful Dead song, specifically Jerry Garcia guitar style especially when the individual critiquing is equally young. Like, it’s Grateful Dead, you have license to play it anyway you feel. Also, he is playing acoustic and you are playing what appears to be a Doug Irwin or Tom Lieber custom with a Garcia pickup configuration while outfitted for MIDI tech lol….
Fun Fact for those who don’t know, “Warf Rat” debuted at the Capitol Theater in Portchester, NY 2/18/71 sandwiched inside a stunningly beautiful Dark Star.
Could you react to the music video for Neurogenesis by Intervals?
Davvy! That Wharf Rat y’all did last night was absolute 🔥, it was amazing and you all definitely did it better. Thank you all for giving us a nice dose of melty goodness.
Don’t get mad at me??!! First time on the internet?😂. Dig the vids! Keep em coming. Keep em coming.
Good critique. I find that you are sometimes a bit harsh, but this assessment seems bang on to me. A nice safe and true to the song rendition, but nothing great. If I were to rate it out of 10 it would get a solid 7.2.
Really enjoyed your take on this. Thanks!
Bro, my dude, ho bro, when you make a play dead comeback can you do operator?
That’s a fun one. I’ll add it to the list.
Keep up the reactions. Digging it man
check out something not gd billy does, hes incredible
Im iffy on Strings too. Dont hate but just dont quite love. Talented no doubt and bringing real music into more average joe ears. I thaught this version was straight up lovely. Davvy, gosh darnit, you da man!
Davey, you are too good of a musician not to listen to other musicians for inspiration.
LMAO
To be representing the dead by teaching these songs and criticizing peoples covers . You should fix your tone . Be kind ✌🏼⚡️
lol. “Fix my tone”
I didn't see anything wrong with his tone, quite frankly it was a very respectful way to look at another artist play one of the songs that (we all love) and that means alot to him and agree or disagree with how it was presented. There's nothing wrong with what he said nor in how he said it. Perhaps you need to fix your perception or just accept that opinions differ "agree to disagree" as it were. I think criticism is all too often mistaken for some kind of insult to the person/artist when that was not the intention.
Tbh, Davvy’s tone was perfect and he gave him props for doing the song with respect. We went to Chants latest show and they performed Wharf Rat and I saw exactly what Davvy was saying about giving it more passion and energy bc he did it with all that. 🤯
Sweet deal🎉
Great take brother!
Yeah this is the first time the band played this. Judge as you must , but there is no Better show out there today , minus Phish at the sphere
Anything BS does is good, period end of discussion.
I think you went easy on them. I’m not saying it was bad necessarily, but they kind of phoned it in. Rhythmically with the mandolin, a lot more could have been done in terms of dynamics. I wanted to hear more chops!
Big Head, Little Body Strings is good, but lukewarm and blande
Old hippie chicks ✅
Billy strings don't have enough dream power .....just sounds technically....
Huh?
@@mikegoetz3184 WHO
@@jayward7549 dream power , what is that supposed to mean ?
@@mikegoetz3184 like Jerry Garcia dreaming on a song,,or Hendrix dreaming on a solo.....no biggie he being billy plays technically,,that's all,,,no worry
Go see him live, he'll blow your mind.
you do not deserve the views. dont act like a kardasian and create drama without backing it up.
Sounds to me like you're a hater .
I lasted 30 seconds.. I can't watch or listen to clowns for very long...
30 seconds counts as a view and a comment counts as engagement, so who’s the real clown here?
@@TobyDavvy I'm not alone in saying you're nothing but a clown...
Vocals are nice, tempo is too fast for me. The banjo just does not fit the tune, it is too precise and in too high a register for this song.
Do you think Billy sold his soul entering the music industry? Would explain 33 tattoo, 33 guitar, winning Grammys. lyrics in everything’s the same are literally “I sold my soul for fortune and fame” lol
33 has history within his family.
The guitar was made by his grandfather in prison and the 33 belongs to that.
His grandparents had a race car numbered 33.
His grandfather and Billy share the birthday Oct 3, hence 33.
@@alimac1469does he come from masons? Little more powerful ones?
@@perijon00no
No he didn't sell his soul.
33 was his Grandaddy Bill's racecar #. Billy was born on his Granddaddys birthday, 10/3 and was named after him. Hence the 33.
@@perijon00 no, read 2 explanations
You're right, tough to screw this one up. He's cool. Def has generic "bluegrass" voice though. Feels affected.
Man I'm just glad to see a young cat going the route. Most young players with any level of talent are scooped up by big money and put in costumes, not attempting to feel Jerry's shoes.
@@dingusfuzzklonnkt2755 For sure. He's def cool and I absolutely admire what he's doing, no doubt.
I dont understand the hype, mostly billy is playing doc watson styled flat picking bluegrass, and there are alot of guys better than billy. But they dont get nearly enough attention unless your on the family circuit of dead enablers. I got a buddy at home right now that would put alot of players to shame with his technique and style, but there really isnt an avenue for him since hes not doing dead songs or drugs.
Listen to Billy Strings on Theo Von’s podcast. He’s super humbled about his playing and acknowledges there are better players. He said guitar is hard for him and works hard at it. Don’t fault him finding success in music. Guy grew up with meth head parents and he didn’t OD and die but rather made a career. I applaud his success and music.
Billy is a great performer as well as a talented musician. He's a genuine guy that people can relate to and he knows how to captivate an audience. He also doesn't play Dead covers anymore.
He doesn't drink or do hard drugs.
Hasn't played a Dead song in years.
Came from poverty surrounded by drug addiction, death and lots of friends/family in jail. But he kept playing his guitar and made it out.
Super genuine, humble down to earth...appreciative and kind.
Billy is able to do it all really well, most of his fans that arent jamband burnouts know hes not technically the best at everything, but hes got a fuller package then most. FYI Billy hasnt played a dead tune in 3 years and is selling out arenas LOL IM sure your buddy is better than him ahhahhahah
@@nickreeder99we don't want/need the best technical player, Jerry wasn't either.
We want genuine heart and soul..we want magic!
Billy has it, Jerry did too!
