Back when I was doing amateur refinishing I used a flexible metal putty knife and a hammer. But I didn't have a planer. Just an electric sander. I have a bunch of small refinished dressers now. The cats & dogs were so CUTE! The desk turned out fantastic!
Love the desk..the colour is perfect ! Wonderful job and it matches the window frame too ... Hahaha at Archie and Henry playing "this is mine..no it's mine" with the rubber chicken ... sooo cute.
That desk came out absolutely gorgeous! I love the originality of the hardware in the duller hue, but if you choose to polish it, it'll be best as nice!
Josh, what an outstanding restoration..You always do such quality work. I really like that you kept the hardware with the patina on it. It all just works together beautifully. Cheers.
I love how you combined keeping some of the desk's history, with updating it the best way possible. That dark blue with the oak looks fantastic! I love how you saved it!
Great job on the desk. Yes, we could actually hear the difference between the unsanded rough part and the smooth sanded part. I love a desk that's built out of substantial wood that can take a good bump from a speeding chair and only need a bit of touch-up paint! I guess those two sliding writing boards would be handy to use the computer mouse on as well. The desk serves a purpose again and has great sentimental value.
The desk is gorgeous. I really really love it. I don't typically like painted wood furniture. I love the color and tone of wood just on it's own. As I am sure you do too. Just love the whole story behind the desk and that you are giving it a third life ! The Animals are so sweet together.
I agree with you. I love the natural wood for the top of the desk. So much character. Also love the blue. Ashley's grandparents would have loved it. Great job Josh.
It’s a great restoration! Happy Birthday Ashley’s mom. Card looks like Millie after a trip to the hair salon lol. I’d leave the hardware as is. It suits the age of the desk.
The desk looks great, so much character. I had oak floors in my house that was built in the late 1940s, The owner right before me had finished the floors in shellac and then coated them with Johnson's Paste Wax that was buffed with an electric floor sander. I loved those floors. They were so easy to take care of with very little maintenance and the finish stood up to everything. I've never been a fan of using polyurethane because to me it seems to show scratches easily.
If you polish the handles they will need regular polishing, another chore to think about! They look wonderful as they are. I love the desk, was unsure about the painting idea at first but the result is a perfect combination of modern and history!
How beautiful Josh. The desk is a perfect combination of stain and paint. Beautiful piece of furniture and family history. Happy Birthday to Ashley's mother.
Eh it came out all right I guess... teasing! I liked that you did both wood and paint, but I really loved the history and character of the desk! What a great piece of functional art🤩.
Excellent job on the desk. Love the colour and choice of stain(s). Imagine the stories that desk could tell if it could talk. I am lucky to have many pieces of furniture that belonged to my grandparents. Brings back great memories of them as I am sure that Ashley has of her grandparents.
OMG, are those the kitchen cabinets from Jonny's current kitchen remodel ? I caught his premier today while working from home (don't tell my boss) and I was going to comment that the cabinets would look great painted blue. I didn't make the comment since he was painting them white, but that must have only been a primer. Hmmm ...
The desk came out beautiful. I agree some pieces are just meant to look "used" i have a couple pieces that i did and left all the dings and holes in. Gives the piece more character. The color scheme is a good match as well. Last piece i did i chose water base dark walnut with the body as black. I distressed the black stain on the body to match the wear and tear on top. Piece came out nice and new owner loves the piece to death. My personal pieces i keep for myself are either natural with a matte poly on or walnut and natural mixed. Working on an antique gate leg kitchen table for my self that will be light walnut too match the black shelves in the kitchen. Love watching you work Josh. Some things we think alike others not lol. But your end product is always a great pleasure to see in the end. ☺❤
Henry’s nostrils are comical, they are really defined by his black coloring. He is beautiful. 4X’s is the charm to get that desk top off🤣. I don’t do trends, I do what I like, however trends do help with old school ideas. Love what you did with this very old beautiful desk, came out beautifully. MHO, would leave the hardware tarnished, it matches the old style look. I used a piece of oak for a threshold-step up into my my house, part of it gets hit with all the weather 365 days a year, its 25 yrs old and still looks brand new. I know you’re not a fan of oak but I love oak, hard as heck to cut but the end result is what I love. Archie lost a toy to Henry, Duke gained a toy from Henry. Its the circle of a toys life🤣. Animals are so much fun and add something so very special to a home. Desk looks great and under the window, its the best way to place it. I would like looking out the window as well. Im no wall flower. 🤣🤣
I LOVE oak, and you have taken that piece of furniture to a new level! Thomas Johnson restoration does some truly wonderful work, but, my goodness, so have you! Happy Birthday Mother! XXX
The desk is just gorgeous! By restoring the structural integrity of the desk and updating it, you’re ensuring that a sentimental piece doesn’t get thrown away, but enjoyed instead. We just spent a lot of money on an antique bed frame that was advertised as “solid oak” that turned out to have veneer that has some buckled places. I wish we had your genius in deciding what to do with it! (I knew that squeaking was a dog toy! 🤣).
What an amazing tribute to a hard working close knit family! It looks spectacular! Agent Fox will be very happy. Your edits were flawless, especially loved the putting in of the drawers. They were so cool, kept reminding to watch them again.
Great job on the desk Josh. You worked your magic again. I am always amazed of all the things you accomplish and your artistic take on everything, whether it's your finger painting, your woodwork, sculptures, gardening and chicken coop builder, dish washer. I am sure I am missing some of your other talents, oh most of all your talent of making vlogs and keeping us interested and entertained.....well done you!!!
I use a wide putty knife instead of a chisel when removing veneer, the wide flat blade with a thin sharp bevel is perfect for sliding under the veneer without gauging the bottom wood surface. just .simple taps with a hammer and it slides under easily
I really enjoyed watching all of this! You tell your stories well with your videography and narrative! I enjoy seeing your furry family members enjoying life with your family. Your skills are amazing! God bless!
What a beautiful family treasure, you save the desk, and the family history as well. Love the color that was added. Blessings to Your family. Faye (Ohio)
The desk turned out really awesome. I love the blue color with the natural top and drawers. Well done. I also like the brass as it was and not shiny. Being shiny would make it look to new. And that wouldn’t suit it at all.
I love restoring old furniture and you did an amazing job on that desk!! I once did an old dresser, I cut the legs of and used round fence post tops to make the legs! It's so satisfying!! I like how Henry sweet talk Archie to steal his toy!!! Henry your amzing!!
What a beautiful heirloom for Ashley. Great job Josh Love the end product. Of course the window was the place. Happy birthday to her mom. Love Henry taking the toy from cat & giving it to his buddy say hi to the ever happy Johnny B. 💐👏👏🎂🇮🇪
Back when I was doing amateur refinishing I used a flexible metal putty knife and a hammer. But I didn't have a planer. Just an electric sander. I have a bunch of small refinished dressers now. The cats & dogs were so CUTE! The desk turned out fantastic!
Love the desk and you will get many many more years of use out of it. I love old SOLID furniture and will do whatever to hang on to them. Great job!!
Love the desk..the colour is perfect ! Wonderful job and it matches the window frame too ... Hahaha at Archie and Henry playing "this is mine..no it's mine" with the rubber chicken ... sooo cute.
I have really enjoyed watching you evolve and develop as an artists and crafts person. I look forward to video's everytime.
Absolutely beautiful desk. Great music and editing, as always, too.
Cheers.
The desk looks wonderful. Ashley's grandmother would be proud of you doing her desk up so nicely. Great work Josh.
The final result is just perfect. Really beautiful choices.
I love how you combined keeping some of the desk's history, with updating it the best way possible. That dark blue with the oak looks fantastic! I love how you saved it!
The music stopping and you getting the screwdriver and then it starting 🤣
So appreciate your respect of all things sentimental. That desk will be continually enjoyed by Ashley. What a treat for us to watch.
Great job on the desk. Yes, we could actually hear the difference between the unsanded rough part and the smooth sanded part. I guess those two sliding writing boards would be handy to use the computer mouse on as well. The desk serves a purpose again and has great sentimental value.
Love the colour choice of the desk combined with the wood..its a beauty!
Love the desk, so much character and history. I like the hardware as is, aged from use.
The desk is gorgeous. I really really love it. I don't typically like painted wood furniture. I love the color and tone of wood just on it's own. As I am sure you do too. Just love the whole story behind the desk and that you are giving it a third life ! The Animals are so sweet together.
Henry is growing into a fine young dog. Looking a lot like Hank. I love it
Love the ‘new” desk. Love that you were able to save it and make it your own. Now it can tell your story!
The desk is beautiful!! To last another 100 years!!
That is war horse of a desk and has so much family history that those marks display this pieces DNA. I love this desk just as you did it.
I agree with you. I love the natural wood for the top of the desk. So much character. Also love the blue. Ashley's grandparents would have loved it. Great job Josh.
44:13 Josh made a new memory for the desk! It turned out great! Again, your talents are limitless! 👍
I would love to have a desk like that. It looks fantastic.
It’s a great restoration! Happy Birthday Ashley’s mom. Card looks like Millie after a trip to the hair salon lol. I’d leave the hardware as is. It suits the age of the desk.

I'm 4 minutes in and can't stop laughing the music cuts are great
Yes!!!!
How beautiful Josh. The desk is a perfect combination of stain and paint. Beautiful piece of furniture and family history. Happy Birthday to Ashley's mother.
Love the deep blue and natural of yours and Ashley’s refurbished desk!! Love the pull out desk extensions!! Great job!!
Great way to bring an old family furniture piece into a new era, adapted to your style, while keeping its history and story.
The desk looks great, and I like the drawer pulls with patina but yours and Ashleys opinion is all that matters.
Love the desk. I love the way you and Ashley hold on to family history.
Absolutely beautiful desk!! All your choices are spot on!!! Also, I loved when you added your own "ding" to it at the end there🤣
Eh it came out all right I guess... teasing!
I liked that you did both wood and paint, but I really loved the history and character of the desk! What a great piece of functional art🤩.
The desk looks awesome! You should be proud! Your pets are so fun to watch! What a happy family! 👍
It's a good job. It's cool as heck, and fits so well into your home.
The desk looks amazing! I love the way the patina of the drawers looks against the navy paint.
The desk looks wonderful. awesome that you guys are taking your time wiht restoring your house and doing neat orihects I love that desk!! good job
I love how the desk turned out! I know it’s not your favorite wood, but I love oak. I would be over the moon with a desk like this. Great job!❤️
You added more history with the chair 😊
Excellent job on the desk. Love the colour and choice of stain(s). Imagine the stories that desk could tell if it could talk. I am lucky to have many pieces of furniture that belonged to my grandparents. Brings back great memories of them as I am sure that Ashley has of her grandparents.
I absolutely love the desk! You did a wonderful job! And yes I would keep the hardware as is not polished. Peace love and light from Kansas

Yeah all the little fibers rise up
You should check to see if Barry is still alive and if so, does he want his key back 😄
Hahaha. If only i knew who he was.

It turned out beautifully! I love that you maintained its character while giving it new life.
I’ve got a desk just like it. What a great idea think I’m going to copy it.
Love how it came out. I know my son would vote for the tarnished look, he's a fan of patina!
Wow what a beautiful grain pattern , love it
Family…. That’s what’s all about! Thank you and your family for sharing these private and precious moments!
The desk looks absolutely beautiful! Great work as usual. I’m also very intrigued M-POSTER 🧐

Great editing. 😊
💕Wow I think that desk looks spiffing💕Why buy new when we can recycle💕Older thing’s we’re built to last💕
What a pleasure it is to watch you restore things! Thank you for a very enjoyable video. Love the end results.
That came out great!. I love working on old furniture. I too will paint it if it can no longer be totally saved, to give it another life. 💜👍
I was thinking that the brass components might be a nice juxtaposition to the patina of the desk fronts. Great editing too.
Great job on the desk Josh. You worked your magic again. Love the desk. I like the color of that paint too.
Love it - nice job Agent Fox! :)
A+ I like it! ( save I wanted to paint the file cabinet blue or replace it with an antique wood one) That desk has great character!
It Works!!! Good Job!!!!
I use a wide putty knife instead of a chisel when removing veneer, the wide flat blade with a thin sharp bevel is perfect for sliding under the veneer without gauging the bottom wood surface. just .simple taps with a hammer and it slides under easily
Man that desk looks nice. The blank wood with the blue turned out so sweet. Good desks are such a joy.
I really enjoyed watching all of this! You tell your stories well with your videography and narrative! I enjoy seeing your furry family members enjoying life with your family. Your skills are amazing! God bless!
You need to decorate the mouse door for Christmas
Haha. Good idea
Ok. The finished kitchen pics confirmed my question on the cabinet color. 😁
I love how that came out, the character in it. I really like the combination of painted with stained wood too.

The desk turned out really awesome. I love the blue color with the natural top and drawers. Well done. I also like the brass as it was and not shiny. Being shiny would make it look to new. And that wouldn’t suit it at all.
