    When I listen to something of this magnitude, I just cannot get out of my mind, "How in the world could anyone on this earth actually sit down with pen and paper and write something like this... it is completely beyond my understanding." i mean Rachmaninoff had to hear this in his head - in complete detail of all that music can contain... and then write it down? Simply unbelievable - and all the other composers, as well!

He is awesome with his expression and talent to be sure. I love it. Well done to Lang Lang and the orchestra. Beautiful!!!

    It was an open air concert which made it more difficult for the conductor and the orchestra to follow the nuances of his musical interpretation in terms of tempo, so he took the initiative and gave helpful clues for the orchestra with his left hand base in some crucial moments. He IS an excellent musician.

      I ended up sobbing for minutes after watching Lang Lang perform Tchaikovsky's 1st piano sonata. He totally channelled the composer, Mankind and human endeavour, and he did it better than Argerich (in 1975), Federova or Barenboim. They are all greats, but from here I'm clear that Lang Lang surpasses them.

      As an a man of the visual arts I see that of course he has the grace and panache of movement to match his musical genius, his beauty is all brought together in his musicality. I'm no musician but I know beauty!

    • @richardvolpe7664
      @richardvolpe7664 10 місяців тому

      Grace and "panache" of movement? The effeminate hand gestures and the mawkish facial "expressions" are enough to turn off many of his viewers, while at the same time enrapturing many others. And why on earth do you refer to him as a genius, just because he plays concertos that practically every professional pianist in the world has been playing for decades and decades? There are few words that are as freely thrown about as "genius". Besides this word, commenters in these pages can't get along without using words like "passion", "emotion", "dynamics", "phrasing", "rubato", and who-knows-what-else.

      Русской? А кто это такие? Бывшие эрзя, финны, мокша, татары с примесями от массы других народов. Что их объединяет, кроме не самого развитого и не самого "многословного" языка, который эти люди знают очень плохо и не уважают ни в чем?
      Нации лишь в головах.
      Например, по моему мнению, лучшим исполнителем 2го концерта Рахманинова был и остаётся вовсе не русский Горовиц.
      Нет?
      Словом нет "русской души" есть вещи, созданные всей цивилизацией. Ведь без наших предков (всех наций) не было бы ни инструментов, ни нот, ни стилей.

    Lang Lang brings something new to the world of music, specifically classical, in his playing and interpretation of it. In ten notes he will let the audience know his life and to others the sadness and joy of it through his playing. We are the beneficiaries of this wonderful interpretation by someone who has experienced through his mother and father and his life so far the push to win by his father and the kindness and love of his mother which is transferred to his playing and that playing takes us to our emotions. He will make us laugh, cry, ponder, all with the light or powerful touch of his fingers and the magnificent expression of his face while he plays showing how he feels about the music from one bar to the next. It’s almost a secret what tonality he will choose in the interpretation of the composer’s original intent but more than that he also conveys a magical quality of his own that springs from his mind and fingers the concertos he plays are like nothing we’ve ever heard before.

    Extraordinary and memorable for all the best reasons. The concerto seems much more alive outdoors, as if the fresh air invigorates everyone. Lang Lang - as always - raises the bar forever with this piece. It's the finest performance I've ever heard. The crowd must be huge, and there is background white noise in the quiet moments, but it's worth it for what it also gives. I would bet many listeners in that auddience realized they were hearing something really great.

    • @richardvolpe7664
      @richardvolpe7664 10 місяців тому

      That's exactly the OPPOSITE of what a soloist should do! The latter's sacred duty is to acknowledge the audience FIRST! Then, go ahead with all the hugging, kissing, and hand-shaking. This getting up and turning one's back to the audience, no matter how often you may witness it, is simply bad form.

    • @cyc20976
      @cyc20976 10 місяців тому +6

      @@richardvolpe7664 I am not sure if that is what the soloist normally should do or not out of protocol, but Lang Lang did it right, because without the orchestra, there wouldn't be a performance, without a performance, there wouldn't be an audience, so Lang Lang did right to acknowledge the orchestra first and second the audience. Respecting the orchestra boosts moral and would benefit future performances. It should therefore be standard to thank the orchestra first to my opinion. Technically it would be not logical to turn to the audience first because applause can last for a long time, it would then be awkward to turn back to the orchestra and hug it out, because the audience usually expect an encore.

    This is my favorite piece of music in the whole world ever.....every note of it....every passage is stirring and I have listened so often on You Tube and from a cd playing at home while I'm doing other things...especially on cold rainy days. I know it by heart....can hum along because I know what's coming next. Have several sections of this in modified piano music so a less accomplished pianist like myself could play them. Lang Lang's performance is mind blowing. He has this internalized in his soul and muscle memory. Some of the time he is not even looking at the keys. !!!! Rachmaninoff's music and style is so distinct I can recognize it when I hear any portion of his music playing.
    Here's something interesting, which I realized the first time I ever heard this well known pop song by Eric Carmen way back when...
    Eric Carmen "All By Myself". The verse borrows from 2nd movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. (Carmen lifted melodies from classical music in other songs too.)
    Carmen:
    ua-cam.com/video/2gqaSE_9HuY/v-deo.html (this video no longer available)
    TRY THIS ONE www.last.fm/music/Eric+Carmen/_/All+by+Myself
    Rach:
    ua-cam.com/video/NWftenCnvXU/v-deo.html
    Wikipedia's entry on this song says: "Carmen believed [Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2] was in the public domain. Having found it was not, only after the record had been issued, Carmen had to come to an agreement with the Rachmaninoff estate. Early versions, therefore, only give writing credits to Carmen, but later versions also credit Rachmaninoff."

    For this the greatest of all piano concertos and certainly the most beautiful, it’s the strength of Lang Lang’s hands and fingers that allowed him to play notes that I have never heard ANY pianist play before. Amazing. I have a recording of Rachmaninov playing this concerto even though it’s scratch and recorded in the 1920s, I still didn’t hear the notes that Lang Lang gave me to hear. Fantastic. Lang Lang plays with such assurance and confidence that he can look away and reach for bass keys without even looking at the keyboard. I play the piano and can do it to some degree but not with the confidence of Lang Lang.
    The bottom line is that this is the finest performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 ever played and recorded for so many reasons. And yet, Lang Lang is ranked so low in the list of the finest pianists ever. Maybe by the time he is 65 he will be high in that list. He has his distractors but most are probably just jealous of his artistic capability. I have had the fortune to see him perform live three times-Houston, Houston and NYC. All three performances were outstanding. At least in those two cities the audiences did not applaud between the movements. I would have thought an audience in Milan, Italy would have had the sophistication and knowledge to know better. Maybe it’s an European thing!

      在欧洲他们认为乐章之间鼓掌是平民,所以努力的做贵族不鼓掌像一座石佛!

      My favorite pianist for this piece had previously been Rudolf Serkin, but I agree with you about Lang Lang. I heard notes that I had not heard before. It is OK for me to see a pianist emote his/her feelings while playing such wonderful music.

    There are no adequate words to describe the brilliance that is Lang Lang. Rachmaninoff is somewhere just overjoyed at this performance. Lang Lang pours every ounce of his being, every cell, into his performances. How blessed we are to receive them. Thank you, Lang Lang, my life is now complete. ❤️

    I cannot say a single word...NO word fits in on how Lang Lang plays the piano. He's everything.

    I have seen many pianists perform Rachmaninoff including Yevgeny Kisin, but with the passion that Lang Lang plays, tears come to my eyes, it is my favorite concert since I was a girl and studying piano, I always said I will play the
    complete concert, I was only able to do the first movement at graduation. Divine👏👏👏👏🥰Greetings from Cuba🇨🇺

    Wherever Lang Lang was transported to when he so exquisitely embraced every piano key in the glorious chord progression at the end of the second movement….I went there with him. And I’m not coming back, ever.
