Agree! Who the driver is doesn't impact the design itself; yes, it does help make the design more memorable or 'iconic' if it belongs to a great driver. I'd like to see a more design-based discussion, looking at colour harmony, layout, optical illusion, special effect paints, and other techniques used in helmet paint, such as gold leaf, hand pinstriping, holographic vinyls etc. Some of Vettel's helmets (Jens Munser Designs) are just incredible! There's so much creativity out there to look at, these designs were rated more on the merits of the driver rather than of the design itself.
Coulthard and Damon had the best teammate helmet combo of all time, Hills was an all-time great, and Coulthard's was just as good as the man he sadly had to replace, even if his career wasnt.
I enjoyed Kimi's helmets to such an extent that I got a tattoo of the Algiz rune he ran on his 2013 helmet on my left forearm. His helmets have always had that element/design on the top, and it was a brilliant touch.
Alex Brunt I admit that my affection for Kimi’s helmets is probably due to him being my favorite driver, but I agree with you. His 2005 McLaren helmets, especially the one with his name on the forehead, are actually my favorite helmets ever. Same here! That Singapore 2010 helmet was something else. His Ferrari-era design is my current favorite. It's got the simplicity of an 80's-era helmet with a modern touch, and in the cockpit of the red Ferrari it really stands out. I think - years down the road - that's going to be the one he's remembered for the most, especially if he's able to actually win a championship with Ferrari.

For me some iconic and good helmets of the era are the Kubica's helmet in sauber, the Massa's Helmet , the Riccardo's helmet in Renault and the Vettel's strange helmets in Red Bull
Both 2019 Renault drivers' helmets were arguably some of the best to ever grace an F1 grid. Nico's is both simple in colours, and bold in design. Instantly recognisable as his own. Then Dan's helmet; What needs to be said? It is unique like almost no other helmet has ever been. Colours that are almost unheard of in racing circles. A statement and a standpoint emblazoned on its side. It is an art peice more than a helmet livery. And despite your cries foul of drivers helmets being flashy and littered with sponsors, these two were almost entirely devoid of logos. Best design and most iconic are two COMPLETELY different measures. A lot of past iconic lids are pretty uninspiring if it wasn't for the person underneath them. Senna, Hill are prime examples.
I think Vettel's white helmet he's had at Ferrari is now pretty distinctive. Also I remember an interview with DC saying he was offered $1mil to sell his helmet space to sponsors but declined to keep the Scottish flag. My personal fave is Mika Hakkinen though 😀

Graphics, colour and designs are something that drew me to motorsport as a kid and is likely what drew me to graphic design as a career. I even worked at a place that designed custom decal kits/graphics for MX bikes in part of my career. I still love seeing new designs, liveries on racing cars. It is part of what makes motorsport great. @@rexstetson1717 his helmet was gold stuff, I agree with you. As driver he took more risks than a reasonable competitor would take. But a fast guy anyway
70's - Lauda. Such a simple design, but the sheer overabundance of red and that small, centered, stark white/black logo of what could appear to be two crossed hammers was pretty intimidating. Of course, that decal was actually something far less terrifying, but if you didn't know what it represented and you only saw it attached to that helmet that was quickly approaching in your rear-view mirror, you might've taken it upon yourself to just go ahead and get out of the way. And how is Niki Lauda's red and white helmet with the L design left out of the discussion entirely?
I'm surprised that Montoya's helmet designs weren't mentioned. They hearkened, in their own way, to Mansell's arrow designs on his helmets, but with the Colombian colours instead - and when he went metallic? Wowzers.
Helmets are a way of identifying a driver when in the car. Why don't modern F1 drivers understand that? Changing helmets every race - they mean nothing now. The Icons of the sport are unmistakable - Andretti, Fittipaldi, Stewart, Hunt, Hill (Graham & Damon), Gilles Villeneuve, Pironi, Prost, Mansell, Senna, Coulthard, Jacques VIlleneuve, Frentzen, Schumacher, and the list goes on - there was never any doubt who you were watching driving the car. Modern drivers have lost the plot.
I saw this and immediately went. Of course, everyone knows who number one is. Now I shall watch this and verify that they got that right. I have not screamed Senna more and am pleased that they got it right.
The best racing helmet of all time was in MotoGP. Valentino Rossi’s Mugello helmet that just had a giant screaming picture of himself on the top so as you saw the bike going down the straight it looked like he was staring at the camera going AAAAAARRRGGH
Think they should've split the 2010 period into 2010 to 2013 and 2014- present period. 2010-2013 had so many helmets to choose from given the fact that the drivers changed them almost every other race.

My favourites helmets are those of Jacky Ickx, Gilles Villeneuve and Ayrton Senna.
This is BS. Kimi’s helmets have always been one of the best with his famous design
Think Vettels ferrari helmet deserves to be the best of this decade, it is clean and easy to recognize.
I personally think:Eddie Cheever's helmet is the most beautiful helmet ever 😊
Got to be Jean Alesi, about 1995, for me. Took the de Angelis design and improved it in my opinion!
Thank you, I though there are no sane people among that Senna nonsense.
Never forget Heikki Kovalainen's Angry Birds helmet. That was badass.
Yaaa. Idk about those 2 guys. Its more their favorite than "iconic" rate or whtvr
Seb's helmet at Singaporeans gp 2019. Metal color Ferrari's logo looking sexy
vettel is the king of helmet design
60s: Graham Hill, 70s: John Watson, 80s: Nigel Mansell, 90s: Jean Alesi, 2000s: Jenson Button, 2010s: none.
I saw this and immediately went. Of course, everyone knows who number one is. Now I shall watch this and verify that they got that right. I have not screamed Senna more and am pleased that they got it right.
@Autosport How do I enter? The website takes me to a Subaru ride along. Thanks.
Same
Maybe they haven't added it yet
Hiya! We have a bit of an issue on the back end updating links so please follow this for now - bit.ly/2PoDYb0
i love alonso helmets, paticularly 2006, 2009, 2010-14, 2017, 2021, 2023
Schumacher‘s white helmet in the 90s
Yeah, I can't believe they picked the red over the white version.
Ricciardo this year deserves a shoutout
MW's helmet was consistent throughout his career. Same goes for Jenson. Lauda in the 70's and 80's.
