Feels like in the modern age releasing a whole trilogy with the same writer, directors over the span of just 4 years is an absolute miracle
Agreed, and it's rare that a trilogy made so quickly maintains such a consistent quality. These movies kinda helped turn the perception of video game adaptations around, showing that if you just adapt from the source material faithfully, you'll get movies that work for fans and non-fans... And none of it would've happened if the CGI character design never changed after that 1st trailer.
The fact that they got Jim Carrey to agree to do THREE franchise films is a feat unto itself
@@NathanDrakeTheGreatIt makes things easier when you already have a very long established base, which is the games, and they intelligently take advantage of that to develop the movies
Not to mention making them all good movies.
My favorite part of this review is not the review itself but just seeing that big smile on Dan’s face in the thumbnail.
This thumbnail juxtaposed with the one for Mufasa instantly told me everything I already expected, and I think that's what Dan was going for.
Every time I see the sad/ disappointed face for a movie, I'm looking forward to always hurts, especially when it's from him and Jeremey Jahns
It is nice that he gets to see a good, entertaining film occasionally.
@@Ebon_Sean I do appreciate that both he and Jeremy Jahns tend to pick thumbnails that reflect their actual opinions.
Seeing that is all I need to know. I'm definitely watching this weekend.
DAN IS SMILING ON THE THUMBNAIL LETS GO SONIC 3 IS PEAKKKKKKKKKK
👏👏👏
Fun fact, director Jeff Fowler said in recent interviews that they did in fact print Jim Carrey's script in 24k gold ink and hand delivered it to his house when beginning discussions to have him return for this movie.
I need to know if this is real.
Its real 😂 @Zydros250
That is like some Tropic Thunder shit!
Jeff Fowler seems like a cool guy
@@NathanDrakeTheGreat Honestly, as soon as Tim Miller confirmed that it was actually Jeff Fowler's idea to delay the first film and redesign Sonic, and that he personally announced the delay without waiting for studio approval or anything, because he knew the movie was completely screwed otherwise, he's had me won over completely. That was a ballsy move, but he was completely right in doing so. And now Paramount has a successful franchise under their belt, and are staring down a potential box office upset over Disney during the most lucrative time of the year. That's all on Jeff Fowler.
The first movie filmed mostly in my small town on Vancouver Island back in 2018. We were on a ferry to the mainland in the lower parking deck and there was a giant star trailer beside us. James Marsden walked by our car with a coffee in hand, our window was rolled down already, so I said "Hey, sorry to bother you, but you're James right?". We stood outside our vehicles and had coffee together for about 30 minutes just chatting about movies and music. Hands down one of the most down-to-earth and friendly actors I've ever met (though I haven't met many).
I hope you didn't ask him about Cyclops lol
@@LocalMultiplexor about the letter he wrote to a judge in defence of Brian Peck, the man who raped and abused Drake Bell
Wow, Vancouver Island!!
I broke my toe there at the Potholes National Park a few years back
Sonic pulled it off. The first good videogame movie trilogy. The curse is broken.
It broke the video game curse with sonic one, it’s come full circle!
@@austygo3563 I mean, S1 and 2 to some extend weren't great... 3 is the first one that I legitimately consider a good Sonic movie since they no longer seem to be ashamed or insecure of the IP and are incorporating more stuff from the games
YAY!!! I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as we did!!!!
ALL HAIL SHADOW!
Hi Roger, just watched your review of Sonic 3 before, as a fan of One Piece and Sonic it’s awesome you enjoyed it.
IT’S THE MAN HIMSELF!!!!!
Them changing that initial design, at least in the financial metrics, might just go down as one of the most consequential and beneficial ‘reshoot’ decisions in movie history.
And you can argue it was cheaper than other movie reshoots because they didn't call actors back in. Even Sonic's lines are the same in both versions. So it was a cheaper reshoot and 100% saved this franchise to the point where they are working on the 4th movie
My crippling anxiety can be traced back to Sonic's water level
Heck, I was freaked out by any retro game with a water level, especially the TMNT game for the original NES. 😮
Same here. Had the DS collection growing up, could never beat the level.
Jeff Fowler has a history with the Sonic franchise, and it shows due to the respect given to longtime fans as well as people unfamiliar with the franchise. There is something for everyone in these films, and I am glad that they have not lost that spark that the first one had.
I'm not a gamer, nor do I have kids but I watched the movies due to the overwhelming good reviews and had a good time. so yeah, those movies are clearly made for all to enjoy, the fans of the games, the young audience member, the parents and those who really have no clue about the lore but just want to enjoy a fun movie.
Dan's kids' movie reviews are invaluable to me. They don't always save me the pain of having to see the movie but it helps being prepared for what's coming. When there's a new movie out my 8 year old always asks, "What did Dan Murrell say?" Sometimes I have to soften it for him a bit like with the Minions! 😂 I wonder what he'd make of being a significant part of a little Bristolian kid's cultural experiences?? Anyway, I'm glad I've got good news for him this time!
I'm flattered and honored - tell him I said sorry about the Minions.
@@DanMurrellMovies He's been listening in with me since he was about 6 so I think this blew his mind, thanks, Dan :)
It's crazy how far we have gone with these Sonic movies. I remember like it was yesterday when Paramount dropped that Ugly Sonic trailer for the first movie and everyone went nuts with it so the studio delayed the first movie for 3 months just to redesign it 😂
The Rescue Rangers movie on Disney+ features the original ugly sonic as a character.
And we went from Gangsta's Paradise in the trailer to actual music from the Shadow game in S3 trailer
Returning to the video after seeing Sonic 3 myself. Being a life long fan since 1992, this was everything I could have hoped for in a loose adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2. The entire 3rd act was fire and I've already bought my ticket for a 2nd viewing
I loved that they played the song from the games in the second act,but it was only like 10 seconds. I wish they would have played it longer and a few more times. It's so iconic and so nostalgic.
Did not expect the follow up drowning sound effect after the intro
Yeah I needed a trigger warning for that sound. It brought back some traumatic memories 😩
That brought back some memories. I had the DS collection, my mom had the original. Both of us did not like that level.
Great review Dan. This was absolute fun blast. I mean you had Jim nailing the 2x role. Great cast, CGI spectacle, nostalgia (if you grew up playing Sonic)
You just unlocked core memories with that low time song 😂
Trauma.
It’s been everyone recently I think it’s a trend now
My greatest enemy in Sonic 3 as a kid was that one moving platform on Carnival Night Zone. IYKYK.
OH
MY
GOD
THE FRUSTRATION 😫😫😫😫
Barrel of doom
It’s even more broken in Sonic Origins collection.
@ Nope. Just mod those in on PC
YES! I thought the game was bugged when I got there initially. Who knew the answer was so simple ^_^
The drowning music cue just gave me the most visceral PTSD. That was cruel Dan! XD
Shout-out to that Olivie Garden joke in the first movie, I still think about how dumb but serious it was taken
Snuck my kids out of school early, left work early and we saw the afternoon Thursday show!
We all loved it, the entire theatre loved it. I think it will just continue to dominate.. and a 4th is definitely happening.
You did yourself an honor sneaking your kids out for goat movie. 👍🏾
SMILING DAN THUMBNAIL
LETS GOOOO
Sonic defying the video game movie curse with all 3 of its entries is pretty amazing.
I've never played a single Sonic game and still enjoyed these movies.
Same here!
Remember the original trailer for the first Sonic, with that horrific nightmare design? If you told me then that we would get three of these things, with Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves joining the cast, and that it would be a highly anticipated holiday release, I would have said you were high and should probably lay down. I'm so impressed withwhat these movies have done and made work.
It has been a wild journey lol
Man I still think that "ugly sonic" was a fever dream/ brilliant marketing strategy
Oh the movie is jam packed with references, SPOILERS
one of the deeper cuts being a meme that Shadow loves Latinas and when i saw him looking at the Telenovela I LAUGHED OUT LOUD 😂😂 this franchise is made by the right people and im so glad both young and old are enjoying it. This makes me truly happy as a long time Sonic fan since Sonic 2
6:55 inexplicable single frame of Gerald Robotnik 🤨
I saw this with the best possible viewing experience: Accompanied by a 7th grade super fan. She loves all things Sonic and has read the comics repeatedly. This was her movie of forever, though I think she said she like the second one a little more. Every few minutes she'd lean over and whisper, "That's a reference!" and she got so excited when they used game music in action scenes. When the mid-credit started, I kept glancing over because I KNEW what she wanted and while I'd avoided spoilers, I had a feeling this might be 'the scene' for her. When the "hammer came down," she was tearing up and she pretty much vibrated with excitement out of the theater.
MILD SPOILERS
Amy Rose was her trick-or-treat costume when she was ten. She handmade a hammer out of a broomstick and an oatmeal carton. Everyone thought she was a pink cat, but she was in her element.
And we thought Dune 2 was gonna be film of the year, Keanu Reeves as Shadow, hold my beer!
Almost had a panic attack with that beginning 😂😂
Just watched it and WOW. This movie blew me away. It has amazing character moments, it can shift tonaly instantly without messing with the pace. It's perfect. 11/10.
A well done trilogy? That is rare. Can't wait to watch Sonic 3. The first one surprised me as to how much I enjoyed it. The sequel was so much fun. I'm so glad #3 lives up to the first two.
I LOL at the Sonic Sound effect, great touch Dan!!
Never in my life until 2020 did I think we’d all look forward to a 3rd Sonic live-action movie and that it’d actually be good.
There would really be no Sonic franchise without Jim Carrey. He really is the secret sauce.
Loved how they had the drowning music and life saving bubble, in the second movie
Sonic Adventure 2 was my big no-life childhood game (hours spent grinding getting every emblem and breeding the perfect chao...) so I'm ready to see my boy Shadow on the big screen.
Flash frame at 6:56! Took me by surprise! Love your reviews by the way!
People joke about Jim Carrey wanting a script written in gold to come out of retirement, but did they really expect the man who relished in portraying Count Olof to turn down the opportunity to play two mustache-twirling villains at the same time?
The tonal shift you can easily hear with your feelings while reviewing both Sonic 3 and Mufasa, just says it all. I was already planning to see Sonic 3 with the family but, I have a feeling that like you, I'll want to watch it again.
Agree with Dan - that Sonic music still makes my blood pressure rise
The drowning music is the stuff of nightmares. No one ever wants to hear that. But when you are under water. Gulp
I have to say Dan, this intro is personally my favorite on the channel.
There is something special, that this series has tapped into the fan base. It brings out what we love. And it is for everyone.
The cast is amazing, love the journey. Excellent review 🤘
Glad you enjoyed it! Sonic Adventure 2 is my favorite Sonic game, if not one of my favorite overall games, and this was movie was pure joy!
Gimme anything with Jim Carrey summoning his rubbery self. I love love love the guy's acting
Bro that Sonic game countdown music got me to so triggered. Dying over and over in the Labyrinth Zone because I ran out of air.
I heard it and my heart immediately started beating faster.
I had forgotten how anxiety inducing that Sonic music is from the game... thanks for the flashback! Lol
0:10 so true, panic mode on!
I’m genuinely happy for the kids who have this Sonic as their first. We have such a great amount of Sonic shows.
I really value your reviews because you don't mince words for family films, you tell it like it is.
Watching the fan event tomorrow on my bday and will probably rewatch with a friend over the weekend 🤩
Been a Sonic fan for almost 2 decades, and I had a blast with the film.
Its so cool to see these films improve with each film from this talented crew and cast.
I also saw it with my old man, who has never seen a Sonic thing before. He loved the film far more than he was expecting(I did have to lore dump him the plots of the first 2 films. So recommended to do that or watch the first two films before seeing 3, of course).
I say if a family film is good no matter the age, it's achieved something special. Especially for a video game family film.
I thought the first 2 Sonic movies were decent but I think what really kicked this one up a notch was bringing in a story from the games. Sure it was tweaked a little bit but I appreciate the director and writers keeping faithful to Shadow's story. And yes, keeping the same thing helps tremendously as they continue to see what works and what doesn't work. I'll gladly see this movie again.
My high school anxiety peaked when that “you’re running out of time with AND on your last life” Sonic sound was played 😂
James Marsden owning the 'Donut Lord' thing as a recurring joke since the first film warms my heart lmao
*This movie was 5 out 5 MARIAAAAAAA's*
the music at the beginning... you learned what stress is when that sound came on instantly.
6:55 "Something that's there's just so you can cram in a bunch of cheap jokes"
I see what you did there 🗿🚬
Looks like grandpa robotnic
Fight club style.
Who would have thought that after that nightmarish first teaser for sonic all those years ago that Sonic would be the best movie adaptation of a video game.
Each film just got better and better. Jim Carey is just a comedy god.
I'm older than Dan and not a gamer at all but I really enjoyed the first two Sonic flicks and a big part of that is Jim Carrey back doing what he does best which is extremely enjoyable. Definitely looking forward to seeing this.
Same here. I’m an adult, and I don’t play video games that often. I’ve never played any of the Sonic games, but I still enjoy the movies, too.
a. That music needs a trigger warning for any 90s kids watching.
b. The addition of the "death by drowning" sound effect to the intro was genius.
c. Glad the movie was good; looking forward to seeing it make news on Charts next week. Keep up the good work, Dan!
That dance scene may have just been better than the Deadpool 3 dance
6:55 The one frame of Gerald Robotnik, is it on purpose or..? XD
Omg, the face in the thumbnail I didn't know I need today and the least that I was expecting
I got a good laugh when Dan admitted that he thought Tails was a girl the whole time. 😂
It’s like reverse Bluey, where most adults stepping into the show initially thought Bluey was a boy.
I was convinced Rabbit in Winnie the Pooh was an old lady as a child.
@ I used to think Blue from ‘Blue’s Clues’ and Periwinkle the cat were opposite gender. I was surprised as a kid when it turned out the blue dog was a girl and the purple-ish cat was a boy. Same with Shovel and Pail.
Hilarious with the drowning music in the beginning 🤣😂🤣
Playing that music from the game at the start of the review triggered my anxiety. Well played Dan, that was a long-buried piece in my brain.
7:13 I've been thinking about why so many on the radical left participate in "speedrunning"
I thought the first one was serviceable, the 2nd had too many human scenes.. I didn't show at the theater just streamed it. My only draw/curiosity factor is Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow and the return of Jim Carrey. The ads for this film just didn't pull me in so I'm glad Dan thinks the film itself is good.
WHY IS DROWNING IN VIDEO GAMES ALWAYS SO TRAUMATIC 😵💫
What a coincidence with your life events and the releases of the Sonic movies! There’s always good with the bad in life. I’m glad that you’ve found some joy with these movies. I’m looking forward to seeing this movie over the holidays. 💜
Okay I'm glad to finally hear I'm not the only one who thought Tails was a girl
I think the vibes of Sonic 3 are stronger than the vibes of Mufasa. I'm notoriously bad with predictions (I predicted Final Fantasy XVI would sell well, I predicted Kamala Harris would win the election), so my hunch that Sonic 3 will do better than Mufasa means that somehow Mufasa will gross like a billion dollars more than Sonic 3.
@@Karto86 I really thought Americans would look at the guy saying, "They're eating cats and dogs" and would say, "This guy is ridiculous." I thought people would remember Trump's incompetence of handling a crisis, the disaster of people losing their rights, his criminal convictions, the tariffs, etc. versus the girl who wanted to put price caps on groceries and would go with the girl who wanted to put price caps on groceries. Turns out I was wrong. People are mad and when you're mad you just wanna break stuff, even if breaking stuff will just make things worse.
@@Karto86 Btw, if you're gonna insult someone's cognitive capabilities you might want to use proper grammar. I thought Kamala "would" win (past tense), not "will" win (present tense). Pro-tip.
@@Karto86 Gotcha. The emoji made me think that might be the case, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying. Cheers mate!
My anticipated movie of the year! Shadow the Hedgehog is my favorite character in the series since I was a kid. Gonna see this movie on Saturday with my family! Thanks for the review. You’re doing a great job!
The sound effects in the intro were perfect!
I seen this with an 8 and 10 yr old. It was great. We all loved it.
That "Sonic Drowning" music did make me an underachiever in life.
I haven't seen any of the Sonic movies but I'm happy to see the franchise succeed. It was a monumentally horrendous start with that original design, but they listed to the fans, made the redesign, and the franchise really became something worth while. Feels good man
Old man jumpscare got me at 06:55 xD
I’m sure Dan is being hyperbolic when he says he hasn’t played a Sonic game since the 16 bit days because there is no way he didn’t own a Sega Dreamcast 😂😂😂
Genesis was the only Sega console I ever owned. NES, Genesis, Super NES, N64 and then on to the PlayStation & Xbox years.
You do know the dreamcast was the reason they stopped making consoles right? Because they were barely selling it?
@@Cloud-dt6xb Hey, I owned one as well y'know - Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Skies of Arcadia, Ikaruga, Soul Calibur & Guilty Gear XX were mainstays... so, you know, there were _at least_ two of us, haha.
@@jezziah2 Right but the point is the Dreamcast was'nt around long enough for a big wave of people to get it especially when the ps2 was constantly shadowing it. So it's no suprise Dan Murrel would'nt have gotten one.
I have no idea what Dan just said. I’m still cowering in a dark corner after the intro.
I knew this review was going to be great because Dan is smiling in the thumbnail!! Joking aside, its a great movie and I really enjoyed it as well. Finally a game trilogy of films where each film has gradually gotten better and better and I have a feeling its going to be the king of the holiday season over Mufasa!
I have to for my kid. But they had me personally at Keanu is Shadow
Great Sonic movie. I am also watching Knuckles show.
Major props to the Sonic series of films. They understood the uphill battle they had initially with that design and ever since turning it around and getting modest success the first time, they have not taken it for granted like most other studios would have and just would have settled for the hopes the brand name can allow them to be lazy or not put as much effort into it (Disney and Illumination.). More studios could take a page from that.
As a person also raised on Jim Carey films, I really enjoy these films, and I love watching them with my neice and nephew cause I feel like I’m sharing part of my childhood with them.
The low oxygen sound was immediate high blood pressure
Really liked your review and your mindset going in it. Subscribed.
Yeah I think Sonic is taking the cake this holiday season. My 4DX showing tonight was PACKED and got a great response from the audience. I don’t think much people will see Mufasa unless they wanna see a movie they haven’t seen or sonic showings will be sold out on Christmas Day and Mufasa will be the only thing available
Wasn't sure what to watch on my day off, but now I do. Thanks Dan
This intro was amazing! I lived that too!
at 6:52 when Dan says "afterthought" you can see a single frame of Grandpa Robotnik. Probably doesn't mean anything... OR DOES IT!?!?!?
interestingly, I have always hated Jim Carrey's humor. However, I LOVE him in the Sonic movies. I kind of feel like this role is the only one that his humor actually fits.
Waa?
If you care to, you should check out the 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' movie - Carey devours every scene he's in, but as a villain it works to his advantage (plus an amazing cast all 'round).
Way to trigger ptsd with that sonic sound at the start, totally felt that one
You talking about the mid-credit scene reminds me of the Harry Styles reveal in 'The Eternals'. I had no idea what everyone in the theater were carrying on about.
WHAT IS WITH THE SINGLE FRAME AT 6:56?
Best Intro yet!!!
Already ordered some tickets just by seeing Dan smile in the thumbnail
loved the movie. needed even more Jim Carrey and certainly more Agent Stone as he's great opposite Robotnik
Good review. I shall likely see it twice in cinemas at a minimum as I have my tickets booked for me and my grandsons next week, and I’ll probably see it too with my son this coming weekend. Not really fussed about seeing Mufasa though at the cinema however.
I’m glad we live in a world where a Sonic movie is going to be better reviewed and more financially successful than a big Disney musical in Mufasa. Proving once and for all that audiences want good old-fashioned, timeless storytelling instead of overly sanitized products that treats their audiences like idiots.
The triumph, yet again, of movie as story over movie as product
Lol no. Sonic 3 has a generic lazy story, and the humor is extremely cringey and cheesy. This is in no way a good story.
